Through Pittsburgh’s first four games of the 2026 regular season, Pat Freiermuth has the stronger receiving totals for fantasy: 14 catches, 125 yards and two touchdowns, compared with Darnell Washington’s nine catches, 119 yards and one touchdown. Washington has gained more per catch, and the Steelers list both players in the top tight-end row of their depth chart. That makes this an early statistical edge for Freiermuth—not proof of a solo role or a rest-of-season advantage.
How Freiermuth and Washington compare through four games
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ team statistics, accessed October 4, 2026, show the following season-to-date receiving totals through Week 4:
| Measure | Pat Freiermuth | Darnell Washington | Edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Games shown | 4 | 4 | — |
| Receptions | 14 | 9 | Freiermuth, by 5 |
| Receiving yards | 125 | 119 | Freiermuth, by 6 |
| Yards per reception | 8.9 | 13.2 | Washington |
| Receiving touchdowns | 2 | 1 | Freiermuth, by 1 |
| Longest reception | 22 yards | 47 yards | Washington |
Freiermuth leads in catches, total receiving yards and touchdowns, while Washington’s greater yards per catch and longer reception point to more explosive gains in this small sample. The totals describe what has happened, not how many targets or routes each player will receive next.
What their weekly lines show
NFL.com’s game logs show how the two players’ production has varied from week to week:

- From the official football of the NFL
| Week | Pat Freiermuth | Darnell Washington |
|---|---|---|
| 1 vs. Atlanta | 5 catches, 46 yards, 1 TD | 2 catches, 18 yards |
| 2 at New England | 4 catches, 32 yards | 1 catch, 7 yards |
| 3 vs. Cincinnati | 2 catches, 30 yards | 3 catches, 67 yards |
| 4 at Cleveland | 3 catches, 17 yards, 1 TD | 3 catches, 27 yards, 1 TD |
Freiermuth had more receptions in each of the first two games; Washington’s 67-yard Week 3 led the pair’s weekly yardage, and both scored in Week 4. Four games are too few to establish a dependable weekly floor or a stable pattern of future usage.
How Pittsburgh lists its tight ends
The Steelers’ official depth chart places Freiermuth and Washington together in the top tight-end row, with Robert Tonyan listed after them. It does not name either member of the pair as the sole first option. A depth chart is a roster reference, not a measurement of snaps, routes or targets.

How their recent seasons compare
Their previous completed seasons offer context, but they do not settle the current role competition. The figures below are receiving totals, not fantasy points; Freiermuth’s 2024 and 2025 seasons were each 17-game seasons.
| Season | Pat Freiermuth | Darnell Washington |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 65 catches, 653 yards, 7 TD (Pittsburgh Steelers) | 19 catches, 200 yards, 1 TD (NFL.com) |
| 2025 | 41 catches, 486 yards, 4 TD (Pittsburgh Steelers) | 31 catches, 364 yards, 1 TD (NFL.com) |
Freiermuth’s completed-season totals were higher in both years. Washington’s receptions and yards rose from 2024 to 2025, while his receiving touchdown total remained at one. Those historical results do not establish either player’s 2026 workload.

Should you start Freiermuth or Washington?
On the available four-game receiving evidence, Freiermuth is the safer statistical lean: he has caught more passes and scored more often. Washington has nearly matched his yardage on five fewer catches, but the higher yards-per-catch figure alone does not demonstrate a larger or more dependable opportunity.
Apply that comparison to your league rather than treating it as a universal start/sit answer:

- Half-PPR: Receptions still matter, but less than in full PPR; weigh them alongside touchdowns and yardage.
- Standard scoring: Receptions do not score, so yardage and touchdowns carry more of the comparison. Freiermuth leads in touchdowns, while Washington has the higher yards-per-catch average.
Before making a weekly lineup, check current targets, route participation, red-zone opportunities, health and matchup. The statistics and depth-chart listing available for this comparison do not establish those measures, and fantasy scoring settings can change which production matters most.
