How to read the currency list
Currency is best grouped by what it affects: core crafting items, Skill Gem socket items, shards, quality and identification items, Essences, and currencies tied to specialized mechanics. Some items have Greater or Perfect tiers, so check the tier before assuming two items have the same effect.
The tables describe item functions, not fixed trade prices. Exchange values vary by league; check current market information rather than relying on a permanent exchange ratio. PoE2 Tools’ economy reference discusses the crafting-and-trade role of currency and market volatility.
Core crafting and trade currency
These examples cover familiar core items and their documented functions. Random outcomes are not guaranteed upgrades.

Other core currency names in the references include Artificer’s Orb, Hinekora’s Lock, Cryptic Key, and Greater or Perfect versions of some orb families. Jeweller’s Currency and shards
Jeweller’s Orbs affect Skill Gems rather than changing the number of sockets on equipment. The exchange reference lists Lesser, Greater, and Perfect Jeweller’s Orbs; the tier determines the resulting number of Support Gem sockets.

Quality items improve quality on particular item types, while a Scroll of Wisdom identifies an item. The exact effect depends on the currency and its target.

Essences and specialized currencies
Essences have separate tiers in the Currency Exchange. The available research confirms the category, but does not provide a complete current Essence catalog or verify every tier’s effect. Check the current item entry before relying on a specific Essence for a craft.
Specialized mechanics also have their own currency categories. The Currency Exchange lists an Atziri’s Temple category with examples including Architect’s Orb, Crystallised Corruption, Core Destabiliser, Ancient Infuser, Vaal Cultivation Orb, Orbs of Sacrifice, Vaal Infusers, Orb of Extraction, and Vaal Siphoner. Other currency-related systems cited by PoE2 Tools include Soul Cores, Abyss Bones and Desecration crafting, Verisium and Alloy currencies, and Runeforging. These examples are patch-sensitive; verify names and functions in the current catalog rather than treating this as a complete list.

Familiar currencies marked removed
Do not copy an older Path of Exile currency list into a current PoE 2 guide. PoE2DB marks the following familiar items removed:
- Portal Scroll
- Chromatic Orb
- Orb of Scouring
- Orb of Alteration
- Orb of Regret
In particular, older guides that describe Alteration, Scouring, or Regret as current PoE 2 currency can be out of date. The dossier notes a June 2026 guide containing those items as a dated example, not as current authority.

Choosing and trading currency
- Check the item’s current description and target: item rarity, modifier changes, quality, Skill Gem sockets, or a specialized mechanic.
- Distinguish random outcomes from effects that specify a particular change. For example, Exalted adds a random modifier, while Divine rerolls numeric modifier values.
- Check whether the item has Lesser, Greater, or Perfect tiers where applicable.
- Before buying, selling, or crafting, check current league market information. Values are volatile, and this guide gives no fixed exchange ratios.
FAQ
What does each currency do in Path of Exile 2?
