If a Fortnite Creative map will not start or matchmaking will not let you join, check Epic Games Status first. If matchmaking is down or under maintenance, wait for service to return rather than changing your local settings. If Epic’s services are operating, use the error message to choose the next step: try another matchmaking region for a Creative launch failure, then work through connection checks that apply to your platform. An island that loads but appears empty is a separate issue and may be caused by its population, capacity, or matchmaking region.
1. Check whether Fortnite matchmaking is available
Open Epic Games Status and look for a matchmaking outage or maintenance. Epic says the Creative message “We were unable to begin the match due to an error” can occur when matchmaking is under maintenance or communication with Epic’s servers fails. Matchmaking errors #1–#3 can also be associated with a system outage. If matchmaking is affected, wait until Epic reports service is available before troubleshooting your router or device.
2. Use the error message to narrow the problem
Read the full message and note any error number; different messages point to different causes. Epic’s matchmaking error guidance explains that errors #1–#3 can involve failure to connect to a match, the content beacon service, tournament eligibility, or a full queue. Those codes do not by themselves prove that a particular island is broken.
Error #5 means Fortnite could not connect you to a match and is usually associated with a server or network issue. After checking service status, restart Fortnite and then follow the relevant connection checks below, as Epic recommends in its error #5 and #7 guidance.

3. If Creative will not begin the match, change region and check DNS
When matchmaking is available but Creative still shows “We were unable to begin the match due to an error,” try another matchmaking region in Fortnite’s settings. If that does not help, follow Epic’s DNS guidance. These are the next steps on Epic’s Creative launch-error support page.
- Try another matchmaking region. Change the region in Fortnite’s settings, then attempt to launch the island again.
- Use Epic’s DNS instructions. DNS settings differ by device and network setup, so follow the steps on Epic’s support page for your platform instead of applying a PC-specific change to a console.
4. Check your connection or device if Epic services are available
Epic’s general connection troubleshooting guide lists the following options. Choose the ones that fit your device and circumstances; many are Windows-specific and are not universal console fixes.

- Restart the modem or router. Restarting network equipment can help with a local connection problem.
- Sync the device clock. Check that your system date and time are correct.
- Check whitelisting and proxy settings. If you use a proxy or security software that filters connections, check whether it is interfering with Fortnite or Epic services.
- Clear the device cache. Use the instructions for your platform.
- On Windows, check for updates and follow Epic’s network steps. Epic’s guide includes updating Windows, flushing DNS, resetting the Windows Hosts file, and disabling background applications. Follow the page’s instructions rather than applying these PC steps to another platform.
5. If the island loads but looks empty, check the instance
An island with few or no visible players may have loaded successfully. Epic says island capacity, low population at the time, and the selected matchmaking region can result in a solo or separate instance. For this symptom, try these options from Epic’s guidance on public Creative islands with no visible players:
- Enter public islands through Discover.
- On console, check whether crossplay is enabled.
- Try a more popular island or join at a busier time.
- Try another matchmaking region.
6. Report a Creative launch problem that persists
If the Creative launch steps do not resolve the error, Epic directs players to submit an in-game bug report. Include the exact error message and describe what happened when you tried to join; that distinguishes a failed match launch from an island that loaded without other visible players.
