Selected critic reviews of Path of Exile 2 lean positive, especially on its demanding combat, character customization, presentation, exploration, and endgame. The important qualification: these are judgments of an evolving Early Access game, not a finished 1.0 release. Critics also flag rough edges, complexity, and difficulty that may frustrate newcomers.

What critics think of Path of Exile 2

Excerpts from professional reviews listed by Metacritic describe an action RPG with exciting combat and endgame, deep build-crafting options, and strong visual presentation. IGN praised the action and endgame while describing the Early Access state as rocky. Game Rant highlighted player power, visuals, combat, exploration, and endgame. Other selected reviews emphasize production values and the appeal of a demanding action RPG. These excerpts indicate a broadly positive pattern, but they are not a complete survey of every critic review. Metacritic’s PC critic-review listing includes Early Access reviews dating from December 6, 2024. [c001]

Metacritic’s review page quotes Eurogamer calling the game an impressive package in Early Access. GamesRadar+ praises its combat and character customization, while cautioning that players need patience to appreciate it. Jeuxvideo.com warns that the complexity and difficulty could discourage newcomers. Metacritic’s critic-review page provides those excerpts. [c002]

What reviewers praise

Combat and challenge

The combat’s demanding feel is central to the positive response. Challenging encounters and bosses can make progress rewarding for players who enjoy careful play and a steep test of skill. That same difficulty is a possible barrier if you want a more forgiving introduction to the genre.

Builds and character customization

Review excerpts praise the scope for shaping a character and its play style. Build-crafting depth is a strong fit for players who enjoy experimenting with abilities and tuning a character over time; the complexity can make the systems less immediately accessible to newcomers.

Presentation, exploration, and endgame

Critics also point to the game’s visual presentation, exploration, and endgame as strengths. Those are observations about the reviewed Early Access experience, not proof that every planned campaign or endgame feature is complete.

What the Early Access label means for these reviews

The reviews discussed here are provisional assessments of a game that can still change. Steam’s Early Access notice states: “Games in Early Access are not complete and may or may not change further.” That context matters when weighing praise for the playable experience alongside criticism of rough edges or unfinished content.

Steam lists Path of Exile 2 as an Early Access action RPG from Grinding Gear Games, with Early Access beginning December 6, 2024. The store currently gives December 11, 2026 as the planned Early Access exit date; treat that as a listing, not a guaranteed release date. The developer’s Steam description says: “Once the game is out of Early Access, Path of Exile 2 will be free-to-play.” These are current plans and statements on the Steam store page, not a promise that the schedule cannot change. Planned full-game scope is not the same as reviewed content

Steam’s current listing describes a planned full game with six campaign acts, 12 character classes, 100 bosses, and 600 monsters. Those figures are store-page claims about the planned game, not critic findings or a guarantee that all of that content is available in the Early Access build. Steam’s listing is the source for those plans. [c004]

Is Path of Exile 2 worth playing?

Based on the selected reviews, it is most promising for players who want challenging combat, substantial character customization, and an involved action-RPG experience—and who are comfortable playing before the game is complete. If you are new to the genre, sensitive to difficulty, or want a polished, complete campaign, the reviews’ cautions about complexity, challenge, and Early Access rough edges are worth taking seriously.

The date expectations have shifted over time. In a PC Gamer report published October 23, 2025, co-director Mark Roberts said the timing was hard to predict because of changing variables, while expressing the expectation that he would be “very, very surprised if it isn’t fully released in 2026.” That was a dated comment, not a release confirmation; Steam’s current planned date is the more direct reference for the date presently listed. PC Gamer’s October 2025 report gives the context. [c005]

Is there a current critic score?

The available Metacritic excerpts do not establish a reliable current critic aggregate score or review count. Because the listing is live and can change, avoid treating an unverified score or count as current. Steam’s user-review figures are a separate measure of player reviews, not critic-review statistics, and should not be substituted for a critic aggregate. Metacritic’s listing and Steam’s store page distinguish the relevant review sources. [c001][c003]
