There is no established universal best Monk build in Path of Exile 2. Available guides recommend different approaches for different patches, combat styles, progression stages, and gear. For a practical starting point, consider the Whirling Assault and Falling Thunder Martial Artist loop if you want a current creator guide with leveling and endgame variants; choose the Invoker Quarterstaff Strike only if you are following the site-specific recommendation for patch 0.5.4; and consider Facebreaker if you want an unarmed Martial Artist approach and can meet its gear assumptions.

How to choose a Monk build

Start with the way you want to fight, then match the build to your current stage and equipment. The available sources are guides and build listings, not a shared-condition performance test, so their recommendations do not establish a single winner for campaign, mapping, or bosses.

  • Choose by combat loop: combo and charge generation into a burst, Bell placement and strikes, freeze and shatter, or unarmed attacks.
  • Check the ascendancy: the documented routes include Invoker, Martial Artist, and Acolyte of Chayula; a guide’s recommendation applies to its specific route.
  • Match the gear: quarterstaff builds rely on staff equipment, while Facebreaker and Hollow Palm options have different requirements.
  • Use the right progression variant: a leveling or early-endgame setup is not automatically the same as a late-endgame build.
  • Check the patch label and update date: the sources span several 0.5.x labels, and those labels do not establish the live balance state as of October 2026.

Documented Monk build options

Whirling Assault into Falling Thunder: Martial Artist

A Mobalytics guide updated September 24, 2026 describes a Martial Artist loop built around Whirling Assault, generating combos and converting them into Power Charges to support Falling Thunder burst. The guide offers leveling and early- and late-endgame variants. Its search result is labeled 0.5.5, but that patch label is not independently confirmed by an official source here. The guide recommends a good quarterstaff for its endgame staff setup and also discusses Hollow Palm Technique as an equipment-dependent alternative. See the Mobalytics guide.

This is the most clearly documented choice in the available material for readers who want a progression path alongside a defined combat loop. Follow the relevant variant rather than importing late-endgame gear assumptions into leveling.

Invoker Quarterstaff Strike

POE2Builds.ai names Invoker Quarterstaff Strike its top Monk pick for the page’s patch 0.5.4 context. Its index lists 12 Monk builds with gear, gems, and passive trees, and also includes Acolyte of Chayula and Martial Artist variants. The site says league-start viability exists, but none of its listed builds is specifically tagged as a league starter. Treat this as that site’s patch-bound ranking, not a universal performance verdict. See the POE2Builds.ai Monk listing.

Facebreaker: unarmed Martial Artist

Woolie’s Mobalytics guide, updated June 5, 2026 for patch 0.5 / Return of the Ancients, presents Facebreaker as a fists-based Martial Artist alternative to mace or staff play. It includes a costly single-target gear update and discusses flat damage and a Rolling Slam Prism of Belief. These are in-game item and build choices, not physical products. This route is worth considering if you specifically want an unarmed approach, but its expensive single-target setup should not be mistaken for a budget leveling requirement. See Woolie’s Mobalytics guide.

Tempest Bell and Tempest Flurry

Switchblade Gaming’s quarterstaff guide compares Invoker and Martial Artist and describes a Bell of Death setup aimed at keeping three bells active. The guide explicitly says it is verified against patch 0.5.1 (May 2026), so its detailed skill and mechanic values are historical guide information, not confirmation of current values. See the Switchblade Gaming guide.

Older freeze-oriented leveling route

A December 2024 player-forum post describes its author’s early freeze route using Frost Bomb, a quarterstaff, Bell, and Staggering Palm, later transitioning to Ice Strike and other skills. The author discusses their own crafted and looted gear. Because this is an older, personal progression account, use it as an example of a leveling approach rather than a current build prescription. See the forum post.

What the sources do—and do not—settle

The guides show that Monk can be built around quarterstaff attacks or unarmed gear, and that the choice of ascendancy and combat loop varies. Their patch labels also differ: the sources include a September 2026 guide result labeled 0.5.5, a 0.5.4 build index, a guide for 0.5.1, and a 0.5 / Return of the Ancients guide. Those labels should stay attached to their respective recommendations.

None of these sources establishes the best-performing build across campaign, mapping, and bossing under the same patch, character level, and equipment conditions. The official material identified in the available sources does not establish the live Monk balance state for October 2026. Treat build pages as starting points to evaluate against your own patch and gear, not as proof of a universal tier ranking.
