There is no confirmed Steam Deck fix for the reported crash in The Drowned City, so start by recording what happens and checking the game files before changing Proton or clearing caches.
First, identify when PoE 2 crashes
Write down the game build, SteamOS version, selected Proton version (if you set one), exact crash point, and any on-screen error. Note whether the same character or area triggers it, and whether the problem began after a game update or a SteamOS or Proton change. Capture relevant log details if available.
| Symptom | What to record |
|---|---|
| Crash at startup | Whether the client closes before the title screen or during initial loading; note any error. |
| Crash on login | Whether login fails for every character or only for one character. |
| Crash entering any area | Whether every area transition fails, or only certain transitions. |
| Crash loading one area | The area name, character, and whether the crash repeats on each attempt. |
These observations help describe and compare the problem; they do not establish its cause. A crash that follows one character into login, for example, is different to report from a startup crash affecting the whole client.
What is known about the Drowned City crash?
One Steam Deck player reported that PoE 2 crashed on entering The Drowned City in Act 3, then crashed during login because the character remained in that area. The player said changing graphics options did not stop it. Testing Proton-GE 10.15 reportedly made loading take longer but did not prevent the crash. This is an individual report, not confirmation of a widespread defect or a fix: the forum discussion.

- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
That report is useful because it shows why the exact area and character matter when documenting a repeatable crash. It does not show that graphics changes or Proton-GE 10.15 caused, or can resolve, other Steam Deck crashes.

Check for a recent change
If the crash started after a PoE 2 update or a change to SteamOS or Proton, record that timing. Change only one setting at a time and check whether the same crash still occurs. Switching Proton may be a useful comparison, but there is no confirmed Proton selection that fixes this particular issue.

Verify the installed game files in Steam
Grinding Gear Games (GGG) lists client problems among several possible categories—including computer, connection, public internet, and server issues—and recommends verifying game files through the relevant launcher when client content may be corrupted. On Steam Deck, use Steam’s installed-game verification rather than treating GGG’s general PC instructions as Deck-specific:
- Open your Steam Library and select Path of Exile 2.
- Open the game’s gear menu and choose Properties.
- Go to Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Let Steam finish, then retry the same action that triggered the crash and note the result.
GGG’s general troubleshooting guide explains its recommendation to verify client files: Path of Exile technical support guide. Verification is a reasonable client check, not a guaranteed remedy for crashes caused by another part of the system or a particular area.

Leave cache clearing for later
GGG says clearing client cache may help with corrupted cached data, but recommends it only as a last resort for crashes or graphics problems. It warns that shader caches must be regenerated afterward, temporarily degrading performance. Its guide gives PC and macOS locations, not Steam Deck paths, so do not apply those paths to the Deck or delete files based on guesswork. Consult current Steam Deck-specific instructions before attempting cache removal: GGG’s troubleshooting guide.
When to report a repeatable crash
If the crash persists after basic client checks—or consistently happens in one area—include the details that make the problem reproducible:

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
- PoE 2 build and the date the issue began, especially if it followed an update.
- Steam Deck model, SteamOS version, and Proton selection.
- The exact crash point, named area, and character involved.
- Whether the same character or area reproduces it, and the steps taken to trigger it.
- Any on-screen error or relevant log details, plus whether file verification changed the behavior.
This information helps distinguish a startup or client-wide problem from a repeatable area-specific crash; it is not itself a diagnosis.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a historical performance claim confirm current Deck support?
No. A GGG forum discussion reproduces a historical statement attributed to Path of Exile 2 director Jonathan Rogers: “Absolutely, we’ve made significant progress on getting Path of Exile 2 working on devices like the Steam Deck. We recently got our hands on a Steam Deck in the office, and the game runs smoothly at 40 frames per second.” That was an in-office performance claim, not a current compatibility guarantee, a crash-rate statistic, or a solution to the Drowned City report: forum discussion reproducing the statement.
Game patches, Proton, and SteamOS can change behavior over time. The evidence available here does not establish a current official Steam Deck crash diagnosis or a confirmed setting that resolves it.
