These are the changes introduced in 0.4.0, not a description of the game’s current patch or current build balance.
What did Path of Exile 2 update 0.4.0 add?
The update’s headline additions are a new playable class, its two ascendancies, new skills and items, and the Fate of the Vaal league. It also brings Abyss into the core game and revises existing systems across player mechanics, the passive tree, items, endgame, monsters, and the interface.

Grinding Gear Games’ 0.4.0 notes are organized into sections for league content, new content, Abyss, general improvements, player and ascendancy changes, the passive tree, gems, unique and other items, endgame, monsters, UI, microtransactions, and bug fixes. The notes therefore cover substantially more than the Druid itself.
How do the Druid, animal forms, and Talismans work?
The Druid is the new playable class, with Oracle and Shaman ascendancies. The update adds more than 20 skills, primarily Primal skills; over 35 support gems; over 8 Lineage Supports available in Endgame; more than 250 passive skills; more than 10 unique items; and four Augment items.

Shapeshifting and the Talisman weapon class
Talismans are two-handed martial weapons designed for shapeshifting attacks. Equipping a Talisman shifts the character into an animal form and grants that form’s basic attack. Players can switch forms, using the attacks associated with the chosen form.
Ascendancies and build changes
Oracle and Shaman are the Druid’s two ascendancies. The update also changes existing player mechanics, ascendancies, passive clusters, and support gems. Those changes are not a blanket buff or nerf to every build: a particular skill, item, or ascendancy needs to be assessed against its own entry in the 0.4.0 notes, and those historical changes should not be treated as current build advice.

What is the Fate of the Vaal league?
Fate of the Vaal is the new league introduced with 0.4.0, bringing its own economy and a temple-building encounter. Ancient Vaal structures activate across Wraeclast. Players sacrifice affected monsters to power devices and gather energy, then use that energy to add rooms to Atziri’s temple.
Room placement matters: adjacent rooms can benefit and level one another, while additional beacons provide energy for further additions. The layout shapes the temple’s challenges and rewards, so the encounter involves choosing how to develop it rather than simply entering a fixed sequence of rooms. The notes identify Standard, Hardcore, Solo Self-Found, and private-league variants.

What happened to existing characters?
Characters from before the update remained in their existing Early Access leagues; the update did not move them into Fate of the Vaal. Because the passive tree changed, Grinding Gear Games granted a free passive-tree refund. That offer does not mean every existing character automatically lost all of its passives.
How did 0.4.0 change Abyss and the endgame?
Abyss became core content in 0.4.0. In the campaign, encounters appear in selected areas starting in Act 2; Abyss does not spawn in every campaign area. The update also adds Abyss encounters and Tablets to Endgame, along with related modifiers and an Atlas passive tree. The Well of Souls quest was updated to account for the change in campaign spawn locations.

Beyond Abyss, the patch revises endgame map modifiers and monster behavior. It also changes items and ordinary item modifiers, passive clusters, support gems, player mechanics, and ascendancies. These are broad areas of change, not evidence that every item, monster, or build received the same kind of adjustment. For exact effects, use the relevant named category in the 0.4.0 notes.

Grinding Gear Games said it made CPU optimizations to speed up key operations and make use of more CPU cores. Its 2025 patch notes state: “Overall, you should get at least a 25% boost, and significantly less frame spikes when CPU bound.” This is the developer’s stated expectation, not an independently measured result for every system.

The qualification is important: GGG says these CPU changes do not help players who are GPU-bound. For that situation, the notes point to lowering render resolution or using Dynamic Resolution as possible ways to improve performance. The 25% figure applies to the CPU-bound claim; it should not be presented as a general performance increase for all players.
Is The Last of the Druids still the current version?
No: 0.4.0 is a historical update, not a reliable shorthand for the game’s present state. The official patch index cited for this version lists follow-up releases through 0.4.0i and subsequent 0.5.x updates, including Content Update 0.5.5. Later patches may change balance or supersede individual 0.4.0 details, so check the relevant newer notes before using this update as current class or build guidance.
Grinding Gear Games’ live thread marks The Last of the Druids as live on December 13, 2025 (GMT+9). It records early hotfixes addressing a Druid party-play crash, other client and instance crashes, a pause issue, and additional launch problems. Those launch notes establish what was addressed at the time; they do not show that those issues persist today.
