Path of Exile 3.28 introduced the Mirage challenge league and a substantial Atlas mapping redesign. In Mirage, players choose a Wish, enter an imperfect Astral Realm copy of the surrounding area, and battle to free a captured Djinn. In the endgame, maps are no longer bound to named areas: players choose their destination directly on the Atlas.
How the Mirage mechanic works
Grinding Gear Games frames the league story around the Afarud, captured Djinn, and Varashta, a Maraketh Sekhema. After defeating a trapped Djinn, players can enter the Astral Realm, an imperfect copy of the area around them. Varashta offers three Wishes before entry; the chosen Wish changes the Mirage and can affect its monsters and rewards.
Inside the Mirage, players fight through monsters, astral hazards, and Afarud mages to reach the Djinn’s tether. Breaking the chain frees the Djinn. The official 3.28.0 patch notes describe the league and its mechanics.
League versions and challenges
The patch notes list Standard, Hardcore, and Solo Self-Found versions of Mirage. Mirage had 40 challenges; Ruthless Mirage had eight. Armour pieces were awarded at specified challenge thresholds, and a hideout totem decoration tracked further challenge progress. These are counts and reward details stated in the 2026 patch notes, not performance measures.

What changed in Atlas mapping
The central change is that map items are generic by tier instead of being tied to a named Map Area. To run Mesa, for example, players select Mesa on the Atlas and use a map item in the Map Device. The Atlas begins at its centre, with a Voidstone slot in each corner. As players reveal the fog of war, Map Device content is represented on the Atlas; Unique Maps are also shown there. Grinding Gear Games said that this makes content accessed with the Map Device physically visible on the Atlas as it is revealed.

The official notes also describe revised Voidstone acquisition and effects, changes to Atlas skill points, and reworked Standard catch-up progress for accounts that had previously acquired Voidstones. Tier 17 Maps became Nightmare Maps. These are patch-note changes; the notes do not establish that they guarantee better rewards or outcomes for players.

Arcane Astrolabes, Shaped Regions, and Memory Vaults
Arcane Astrolabes apply to an Atlas Map and create a Shaped Region affecting multiple maps. Completing the added content removes the region’s influence from the map just completed and adds a modifier to the other maps still within that region. Clearing the region leads to a Memory Vault, with rewards associated with that Atlas quadrant. The patch notes describe this progression but do not promise a particular reward value or improved results.

Reliquarian Ascendancy
The Scion gained the Reliquarian Ascendancy. Its notable passives borrow powers from unique items, and those powers change with each league, according to the official notes.

Exceptional Support Gems and other items
Exceptional Support Gems were introduced as an improved version of Awakened Support Gems, which are being phased out. The patch notes list over 40 Exceptional Support Gems in the endgame. They also describe three coins that corrupt a level 20 skill gem with a random valid support effect matching the coin’s attribute, alongside new skill gems, 13 unique items, and eight divination cards. Those figures are counts reported by Grinding Gear Games in 2026.
