Co-marketing is a negotiated partner relationship in which a provider and another company coordinate campaigns, sales support, listings or other go-to-market work. Affiliate marketing is a tracked-referral arrangement: a publisher, creator or developer sends traffic through an approved link and earns a commission when a qualifying purchase or subscription is attributed to that referral.
A game studio should therefore start with its relationship and audience, not with the word “partner.” A provider partnership page may describe co-marketing resources without offering affiliate commissions, while an affiliate program may cover development products rather than payment services.

What is the difference between co-marketing and affiliate marketing?
The practical distinction is who does what, how value is created and how payment is attributed.

This framework reflects the published descriptions from Stripe and Unity; it is not a promise that every provider or affiliate program offers every listed benefit. Co-marketing can involve money, but it is not automatically a referral commission. Affiliate marketing can be simple to operate, but it is not automatically a strategic provider relationship.

How payment-provider co-marketing works
A negotiated partner relationship
In co-marketing, the provider and partner agree on a shared commercial objective. For a game business, that objective could be a public integration story, a launch campaign or joint education for other developers. The important point is that the relationship is organized around a partner track and agreed activity, rather than around an anonymous link that pays after a sale.
Stripe’s partner program description lists tracks for services, SaaS platforms, apps, payment methods and technology. It says SaaS Platforms and Payment Methods partners can access co-marketing and co-selling resources. The marketing resources it names include campaign assets, partner-directory listings and co-marketing funds. Those are program descriptions for selected tracks, not universal benefits for every applicant.
Eligibility comes before campaign planning
Do not assume that a game studio qualifies merely because it uses, recommends or integrates a payment provider. Stripe states that its Technology track is invite-only. The published page does not establish that an individual game developer is eligible, what geography applies to a specific track or what commercial obligations a studio would accept. Ask the provider to confirm the track, approval route, region, integration requirements and available resources in writing before promising a campaign.

What co-marketing can look like in practice
A studio with a substantial platform relationship might propose a joint announcement, a technical case study, a webinar or a campaign aimed at other developers. The provider could contribute approved creative, a directory listing, sales coordination or a defined pool of co-marketing funds. The exact mix depends on the partner track and the negotiated plan. A studio should not describe any of those items as guaranteed until the provider has approved them.
Read vendor case studies narrowly
Stripe’s partner page includes a WooCommerce case study reporting a launch in 18 countries in three months. That is a vendor case-study result for WooCommerce, not a game-development benchmark and not evidence that co-marketing generally produces the same outcome. If you cite it, identify the company, the reported period and the fact that it is a case-study result; never turn it into a forecast for an indie studio.
How affiliate marketing works for game developers
Tracked links and qualifying actions
An affiliate program gives an approved participant a link or other tracking method. The participant places it where the program permits, a reader or user follows it, and the affiliate receives a commission only when the referral meets the program’s qualifying conditions. Those conditions can include the product category, an approval decision, a tracking window and placement rules.
Unity provides a relevant development-product example
Unity’s affiliate program page describes an opportunity for creators and game developers to earn commissions on links to the Asset Store and selected Unity products. The program is therefore an example of affiliate monetization around development tools, not evidence of a payment-provider affiliate offer.
Unity’s publisher guidance, Affiliate best practices, describes operational rules. The page lists a 5% commission for Unity Asset Store purchases, $17.50 for a Unity Plus subscription and $200 for a Unity Pro subscription, with a seven-day tracking window for Asset Store products and a 30-day window for Unity Store products. Treat these figures as time-sensitive terms from the published guidance, not permanent rates; verify the live page and your approval agreement before publishing prices or forecasting revenue.

Placement restrictions matter
The same Unity guidance says affiliate links must be placed on third-party websites rather than on Unity properties. A tutorial site, studio blog or independent developer publication may therefore need to check whether its proposed page is an eligible third-party placement. A link that technically works but violates the program’s placement rules may not qualify for commission.
Affiliate income is not the same as a provider relationship
An affiliate can recommend a qualifying product without receiving campaign assets, sales support, directory placement or co-marketing funds. Conversely, a provider can give a partner campaign support without paying a tracked referral commission. Use the program’s actual agreement and rules, not the label “partner,” to determine which model you are evaluating.
Can a game developer partner with a payment provider to promote a game?
Possibly, but the available evidence supports a conditional answer rather than a blanket yes. Stripe documents a partner ecosystem with several tracks and co-marketing or co-selling resources for selected partners. It does not state that every game studio qualifies, that a game launch itself is an eligible partner activity or that the program pays affiliate commissions.

- Identify the relationship. Are you an integration partner, a platform, a service provider, a payment-method partner or another category named by the provider?
- Confirm eligibility. Ask whether the relevant track is open, invite-only or limited by geography, product type, volume or technical scope.
- Define the shared story. State what the campaign promotes: an integration, a developer service, a launch resource or another jointly useful outcome.
- Document deliverables. Record who supplies creative, approvals, directory copy, sales introductions, funds and reporting.
- Separate attribution from exposure. A campaign may create awareness without a commissionable referral. Specify how leads, sign-ups or sales will be measured.
If the provider cannot confirm an eligible track and written deliverables, describe your outreach as an exploratory partnership discussion, not as an active co-marketing program.
When affiliate marketing is the better fit
You already have a relevant audience
Affiliate marketing is most straightforward when your site, channel or community regularly helps developers choose tools. A tutorial that explains an Asset Store workflow, for example, can direct readers to an eligible product if the publisher rules allow that placement. The value comes from a useful recommendation and measurable referral, not from a formal integration with the provider.
Your content can support the tracking window
Tracking windows are short enough that timing affects attribution. The Unity guidance lists seven days for Asset Store products and 30 days for Unity Store products. A durable tutorial may continue to attract readers for months, but a commission is tied to the program’s current window and qualifying action. Record the applicable window beside each link when you plan a campaign.
You can maintain link and disclosure discipline
Affiliate pages need a process for checking destination URLs, product eligibility, approval status and placement restrictions. Keep a change log for rates and windows because the Unity figures are expressly subject to change. Do not present a commission as guaranteed income; it depends on qualifying traffic and the program’s rules.

Co-marketing due diligence for an indie studio
1. Verify the partner track
Use the provider’s current partner page and ask the partner team to identify the exact track. Stripe’s page names several categories and identifies the Technology track as invite-only. Capture the track name, application or invitation status and any regional limitation in your records.

2. Define the campaign asset package
List each proposed item separately: announcement copy, technical content, event participation, directory listing, creative files, sales introductions or funding. “Marketing support” is too vague to manage. For every item, specify the owner, approval deadline, publication channel and whether the asset can be reused after the campaign.
3. Set channel ownership and approvals
Agree who owns the landing page, email list, social accounts, developer documentation and analytics. Establish a single approval path for logos, claims, screenshots and product names. A provider’s willingness to co-market does not automatically grant permission to use its marks or publish unapproved performance claims.
4. Establish attribution before launch
Choose the event that matters: a qualified lead, a completed integration, a referred opportunity, a signed customer or another agreed milestone. Decide which system records it and how the parties resolve duplicate or disputed attribution. Keep campaign reporting separate from affiliate tracking; they answer different commercial questions.

If co-marketing funds are discussed, document the amount, currency, eligible expenses, reimbursement process, timing and unused-funds treatment. Also record your obligations, such as content production, event staffing, technical support or minimum promotion. The existence of “co-marketing funds” on a partner page does not establish that your studio will receive them.
Affiliate due diligence before publishing links
Check the product list
Confirm that the specific Asset Store item, subscription or other product is commissionable. Unity’s affiliate description refers to the Asset Store and selected Unity products, so do not assume every Unity transaction qualifies.
Check approval and account status
Apply through the official program route and retain the approval notice and current terms. A public program page is not proof that an individual publisher has been accepted.
Record the tracking window and rate
For the Unity figures published in the affiliate guidance, record seven days for Asset Store products and 30 days for Unity Store products, along with the listed 5%, $17.50 and $200 amounts. Label them with the page date or your verification date and recheck before a campaign goes live.
Validate placement
Review every destination page, video description, newsletter and community post against the program rules. Unity’s guidance specifically says links belong on third-party websites rather than Unity properties. Remove or relocate links that do not meet that condition.

Plan maintenance
Assign someone to test links, replace retired products, update rates and archive pages when terms change. A technically correct article can become noncompliant after a product, window or placement rule changes.

Yes, but keep the relationships and measurement separate. A studio might pursue a provider partnership for an integration announcement while an independent development publication uses an affiliate program for eligible tools. The studio should not insert affiliate tracking into a co-marketing campaign unless the provider has expressly approved that arrangement, and an affiliate publisher should not imply that it represents the provider.
Use distinct briefs, links, reporting and approval records. One document can describe the provider relationship and another can govern affiliate content. This separation prevents a co-marketing logo placement from being mistaken for a commission promise and prevents an affiliate recommendation from being presented as an endorsed integration.

Calling every partner page an affiliate program

Why it fails: Rates, products, windows and placement rules can change.
Correction: Verify the live Unity pages and your account terms immediately before publication and whenever a campaign is renewed.

Correction: Audit each placement and maintain evidence of compliance.
Do not confuse affiliate marketing with payment monetization
Stripe Connect’s payment-monetization guidance describes a platform-revenue context. A platform may monetize payment activity through its integration, but that is not the same mechanism as an affiliate earning a commission for a tracked referral. If your business model involves facilitating payments inside a game platform, analyze the Connect arrangement, platform economics, contractual responsibilities and applicable terms separately from affiliate content.
A decision checklist for game developers
- Choose co-marketing first when you have a defined provider relationship, a credible integration or shared launch story and the capacity to meet joint campaign commitments.
- Choose affiliate marketing first when you control an independent developer audience and can recommend specific eligible products through compliant, trackable placements.
- Investigate both independently when one activity supports your product integration and another supports editorial or educational content.
- Pause and verify when a page uses “partner” language but does not state commissions, tracking windows, qualifying products or placement rules.
- Do not publish a rate, cookie period, signup route or eligibility claim unless the current official terms support it.
Bottom-line guidance for an indie studio
Co-marketing is the better question when you are seeking a joint go-to-market relationship with a payment provider. Affiliate marketing is the better question when you are monetizing trusted recommendations to eligible development products. Stripe’s published partner materials support investigating co-marketing and co-selling through specific tracks, while Unity’s official materials provide a concrete affiliate example for Asset Store and selected Unity products. Neither source supports treating a payment-provider partner page as an affiliate offer for every game developer. Start with eligibility, document the operating terms and keep campaign exposure, tracked referrals and platform payment monetization as separate mechanisms.
