pbvm105.dll is a PowerBuilder Virtual Machine file used by PowerBuilder 10.5, InfoMaker 10.5, and applications deployed with that runtime. The safe fix is to identify the application requesting it and repair or reinstall its complete, matching runtime rather than downloading a standalone DLL.

What this file actually does

pbvm105.dll is a genuine legacy third-party application file from Sybase, the original publisher of PowerBuilder. “PBVM” means PowerBuilder Virtual Machine. The file provides part of the runtime engine that allows compiled PowerBuilder applications to start and run.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

It is not a Windows system file. It should not normally be copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. PowerBuilder deployment guidance places the runtime beside the application or in the application’s configured runtime directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A complete PowerBuilder 10.5 deployment can also require:

  • pbshr105.dll
  • libjcc.dll
  • libjutils.dll
  • msvcr71.dll
  • msvcp71.dll
  • gdiplus.dll in deployments that require it
  • atl71.dll for applications using Ink controls

A commonly circulated file listing describes pbvm105.dll as a 32-bit file with version 10.5.0.5063 and a size of approximately 4.53 MB. That metadata comes from a third-party listing and does not authenticate a particular copy. Do not use those details as a reason to download a file from an archive or to mix it with another PowerBuilder build.

Causes at a glance

Symptom or situation Most likely cause Correct direction
The application says pbvm105.dll was not found immediately after installation The installer omitted the PowerBuilder runtime Repair or reinstall the application
The program worked until Windows or an antivirus scan changed files The DLL or a companion file was deleted or quarantined Check quarantine, then restore the complete trusted runtime
You copied only the application executable from another computer The deployment is incomplete Obtain the original runtime package
The error changed to “entry point not found” Runtime files are from different builds or releases Replace the entire runtime set with a matching package
The error says the file is not designed to run on Windows Corruption, wrong architecture, or an incompatible binary Replace the complete runtime and verify the application architecture
Reinstalling the application did not help Antivirus interference, PATH conflicts, missing legacy dependencies, or a damaged installer Inspect the application folder, quarantine, dependencies, and event logs
SFC reports no problems Windows is intact, but the third-party runtime is missing Continue with application repair rather than repeating SFC
The program is 32-bit on 64-bit Windows Normal Windows compatibility scenario, but it needs 32-bit dependencies Install the application’s 32-bit runtime package

Fix 1: Identify the application that needs the file

The filename alone cannot identify the exact program on your computer. Start with the error window, shortcut, or executable path.

Use the error window

  1. Start the program that fails.
  2. Note the application name shown in the title bar or message.
  3. Write down the full error text.
  4. Check whether the error names a particular executable.

A documented PowerBuilder launch message is:

This application failed to start because pbvm105.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

If the message appears when launching an old business application, reporting tool, database utility, or InfoMaker deployment, that application is the first place to repair.

Find the executable location

  1. Right-click the application’s shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target.
  4. Select Open File Location if it is available.
  5. Look for the application executable and its surrounding files.

Do not delete or replace files yet. Record the folder path and the program name so you can give accurate information to the vendor or IT administrator.

Check whether the runtime is already present

In the application folder, look for:

  • pbvm105.dll
  • pbshr105.dll
  • libjcc.dll
  • libjutils.dll

If pbvm105.dll is present but the program still fails, the problem may be a missing dependency, a mismatched build, a blocked file, or a runtime being loaded from another location. If only the executable is present, the deployment is probably incomplete.

Fix 2: Repair the original application first

This is the most likely and safest solution.

Use Windows’ installed-app repair option

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the PowerBuilder-based application or InfoMaker deployment.
  5. Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application entry on Windows 10.
  6. Choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

If the repair option is absent or does not restore the runtime, return to the application entry and choose Uninstall only after confirming that you have the installer, deployment media, configuration details, and any required data backups.

Run the application installer’s repair mode

Some older installers provide their own repair process.

  1. Locate the original setup program or approved deployment package.
  2. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  3. Choose Repair, Modify, Verify files, or Reinstall, depending on the wording.
  4. Ensure that the PowerBuilder or InfoMaker runtime component is selected.
  5. Complete the installation.
  6. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
  7. Launch the affected application again.

A legitimate PowerBuilder Runtime Packager-generated MSI is an appropriate source when the original software provider supplied one. The package should match the application’s PowerBuilder release and maintenance build.

What success looks like

The application should open without the missing-file message. Do not judge the repair solely by the presence of pbvm105.dll; the companion runtime files must also be present and compatible.

If the same message returns, ask the vendor, administrator, or software archive for the complete PowerBuilder 10.5 runtime package, not just one DLL. PowerBuilder applications generally require runtime files compatible with the build used to create them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and file protection

Antivirus software can quarantine a legacy DLL even when the application itself is trusted. Quarantine is a possibility, not proof that the file is malicious.

Check Windows Security

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Look for an entry involving the application folder or pbvm105.dll.
  8. If the application and installer are trusted, follow your organization’s policy to restore the item.
  9. Add an exclusion only if your administrator or software vendor approves it.

Do not restore a DLL from an unknown location merely because its filename matches. If antivirus removed the file, the preferred next step is still to repair or reinstall the complete application from its legitimate installer.

After restoring or reinstalling:

  1. Run a full scan in Windows Security.
  2. Start the application.
  3. Confirm whether the error is gone.
  4. If the file is quarantined again, stop using the application and contact the vendor or IT department.

Fix 4: Restore the complete runtime, not just pbvm105.dll

PowerBuilder deployments are sets of related files. Restoring only the named DLL can produce a second error because pbvm105.dll depends on other runtime components.

Check the application’s approved deployment directory for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • pbshr105.dll
  • libjcc.dll
  • libjutils.dll

The application may also need the older Microsoft runtime files documented for PowerBuilder 10.5:

  • msvcr71.dll
  • msvcp71.dll

The latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable is not automatically a replacement for those Visual C++ 7.1-era libraries. Do not assume that installing the newest package will supply the exact legacy dependencies.

Ask the application vendor for its approved prerequisites or runtime installer. Do not copy these files from another unrelated program, because different applications can require different builds and configurations.

Check the application’s runtime path

If the files exist but the error persists:

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Inspect the Target and Start in fields.
  4. Confirm that the shortcut points to the intended installation.
  5. Check whether the application uses a launcher or configuration file that specifies a runtime directory.
  6. Ask the vendor or administrator whether the application uses the Windows PATH environment variable.

Multiple PowerBuilder runtime copies can cause a repaired application to load an older or incompatible file first. Keep the runtime files for one deployment together and avoid placing ad hoc copies in Windows system directories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

PowerBuilder 10.5 applications are commonly 32-bit. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it needs 32-bit versions of its application dependencies.

Do not copy a 32-bit pbvm105.dll into System32 or SysWOW64. Those folders have architecture-specific behavior, and Windows system directories are not the normal installation location for this runtime.

To determine the application architecture:

  1. Ask the vendor or administrator which runtime the application requires.
  2. Check the application’s deployment documentation.
  3. If available, use a trusted Windows or development diagnostic tool to inspect the executable’s architecture.
  4. Match the runtime package to the application rather than to the operating system alone.

If a 32-bit PowerBuilder application is running on 64-bit Windows, the correct solution is normally to install its complete 32-bit runtime beside the application or in the vendor’s configured runtime directory.

Fix 6: Reinstall from a legitimate source

PowerBuilder 10.5 is obsolete and is no longer generally available as a current SAP download. A public official standalone download for pbvm105.dll cannot be assumed to exist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use these sources, in this order:

  1. The original application installer.
  2. The software vendor’s deployment package.
  3. Your organization’s IT department or software archive.
  4. A PowerBuilder Runtime Packager package supplied for that application.
  5. Original installation media preserved by the application owner.

Before reinstalling, save application data and configuration files. If the application stores settings in a database or separate data directory, confirm with the vendor what must be backed up.

Avoid random DLL download sites

Downloading a standalone DLL from an unknown archive is unsafe and often ineffective. The file may contain malware, belong to the wrong PowerBuilder build, have the wrong architecture, or be missing its companion files. It can also leave the application with a mixed runtime that changes a “file not found” error into an entry-point or initialization error.

Never solve this problem by copying a downloaded DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or a random folder on PATH.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged

pbvm105.dll is a third-party application file, so Windows repair tools will not normally recreate it. Use DISM and SFC when you also have signs of damaged Windows components, such as broken built-in utilities, unexplained system file errors, or repeated corruption affecting multiple applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run DISM, then SFC

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the PowerBuilder application.

Run DISM before SFC. These commands repair protected Windows components, not the application’s private PowerBuilder runtime.

If SFC and DISM report that Windows is healthy but pbvm105.dll remains missing, that result is expected. Return to the application installer or runtime package.

When repeatedly hunting dependencies and rerunning repairs makes the cause unclear, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the PowerBuilder application remains the definitive fix for this application-owned DLL.

Fix 8: Do not use regsvr32 for this runtime

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

pbvm105.dll is a PowerBuilder runtime engine, not documented as a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL. Running this command is therefore not a general solution:

regsvr32 pbvm105.dll

It may produce an error stating that the module loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That does not mean the runtime should be registered another way.

Restore the complete runtime package in the application’s expected directory instead.

Fix 9: Use System Restore only for a recent change

System Restore can be reasonable if the program worked recently and the file disappeared after a known system change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Choose a different restore point if available.
  3. Select a restore point from before the problem began.
  4. Review the affected programs.
  5. Back up important data.
  6. Start the restore.

System Restore is not a substitute for the original application installer. If the runtime was never installed, restoring Windows will not create a valid PowerBuilder deployment.

Fix 10: Update drivers only for a broader application problem

A missing pbvm105.dll is not normally a graphics-driver or hardware-driver error. Device Manager will not recreate this file. Check drivers only if the application also crashes with display, printer, database, or hardware-related symptoms.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the failing feature.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if prompted.

For a clean driver reinstall:

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the device.
  2. Select Uninstall device.
  3. Follow the prompt.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Install the driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer or your organization.

When manually identifying outdated drivers across several devices becomes guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers it detects and automate installation with the full version. It is optional and will not replace the PowerBuilder runtime that belongs with the application.

If the error changes after repair

“The procedure entry point could not be located”

This usually indicates that pbvm105.dll and one or more companion runtime files are from different builds. Remove the mixed deployment through the application’s installer and reinstall the complete matching runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not replace only the DLL named in the message.

“The application was unable to start correctly”

Check for missing legacy dependencies, antivirus interference, architecture mismatch, and a damaged application installation. Inspect the application directory and Windows Event Viewer for additional module names.

“The file is either not designed to run on Windows”

Possible causes include:

  • A corrupted binary
  • A wrong-architecture file
  • A mismatched PowerBuilder build
  • An incomplete or damaged installation
  • A file altered or blocked by security software

Replace the complete runtime from a trusted deployment package. Do not attempt to repair the file with regsvr32.

The error persists after reinstalling

Check these points:

  1. Confirm that you reinstalled the correct application, not just a shortcut or launcher.
  2. Check antivirus quarantine again.
  3. Confirm that pbvm105.dll and its companion files are in the intended runtime directory.
  4. Check whether the launcher points to an older copy.
  5. Ask the vendor which PowerBuilder maintenance build created the application.
  6. Review Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, and checking Windows Logs > Application.
  7. Provide the vendor with the exact error, application path, Windows version, and runtime package used.
