Yes—long-term inactivity alone is not a reason to avoid updating a Meta Quest headset. If your Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3, or Quest 3S has been sitting in a drawer, charge it fully, use reliable Wi-Fi, remove unusual accessories, and then install the update normally. The real risks are low battery, unreliable power, interrupted installation, corrupted software, storage problems, or a defective update—not the fact that the headset was unused.
Reports of Quest headsets becoming stuck at the Meta logo, Applying software update, or USB Update Mode describe genuine failure modes, but they do not prove that storage alone causes them. Meta community support has specifically identified low battery as one possible cause of update-loop behavior and recommended extended charging before further recovery steps.

Why the “don’t update it” warning is misleading
A headset that has been left unused should not be kept permanently on old software. Updates can provide security fixes, compatibility improvements, bug fixes, and support for newer apps and services.
However, updating a neglected headset can expose problems that were already present. It may have a deeply discharged or aging battery, several releases of software to install, limited free storage, a damaged cable, or corrupted system files. An interruption during installation can also lead to a boot loop.

Those are reasons to update carefully—not reasons to avoid updates indefinitely. There is no verified general Meta rule saying that a Quest headset must not be updated after sitting unused.
Before you start: the safe first-update checklist
- Inspect the headset. Do not charge or use it if it is swollen, unusually hot, wet, physically damaged, or producing a burning smell.
- Check the charging port, cable, and adapter. Use a known-good setup. A poor connection can leave the headset powered on but unable to sustain an installation.
- Charge it for at least two hours if it has been stored for weeks or months, appears completely dead, or shows low battery. Wait for a full-charge indication before beginning a major recovery procedure. Meta support has recommended this approach for update boot loops.
- Disconnect third-party battery packs and USB accessories. Remove anything that could interfere with charging, booting, or USB recovery.
- Use stable Wi-Fi. Keep the headset near the router and avoid starting the update on an unreliable connection.
- Check available storage. Delete unnecessary downloads if the headset is nearly full, but do not factory-reset it merely to make room unless other options have failed.
- Keep the headset awake and nearby. Do not repeatedly power-cycle it just because an installation screen takes time.
Quest menu labels can vary by model and Horizon OS release, so follow the wording shown on your headset.
How to update a normally working Quest
On current Quest software, the usual route is:
Settings > System > Software Update
Depending on the version installed, you may first need to open Quick Settings and then Settings. Follow the on-screen instructions, leave the headset connected to power if appropriate, and do not interrupt the installation while the progress indicator is changing.
A third-party Quest troubleshooting guide updated on December 18, 2025 lists the same general menu path and recommends charging before troubleshooting. Because Quest menus change, treat that path as a guide rather than a permanent guarantee: use the current labels displayed on your device.

Update time has no universal limit. It depends on the download size, Wi-Fi speed, how far behind the headset is, available storage, queued controller or app updates, battery behavior, and Meta’s rollout servers. A slow screen is not automatically a failed update.
How to tell a slow update from a failed one
- Probably still progressing: the progress indicator changes, the headset responds normally, or it briefly restarts as part of installation.
- Needs attention: the same screen remains unchanged for an unusually long period, the headset repeatedly restarts, or it always returns to Applying software update.
- Recovery state: the headset repeatedly displays USB Update Mode or cannot get beyond the Meta logo after controlled restarts.
Do not diagnose a “brick” from one slow boot or one screenshot. Give a genuinely progressing installation time to finish, but repeated loops after adequate charging indicate a real troubleshooting problem.
If the headset will not turn on
- Connect it to a reliable charger and leave it charging for at least 30 minutes. If it has been empty for months, leave it longer—Meta support has recommended at least two hours for update-loop cases.
- Hold the Power button for approximately 10 seconds to attempt a forced restart.
- If there is no response, try another compatible cable and power adapter.
- Remove external battery accessories and USB devices.
- If it reaches the Meta logo, recovery screen, or update screen, stop repeating the power-button procedure and use the relevant recovery steps below.
A headset that remains completely unresponsive after reliable charging may have a battery, charging-port, or other hardware problem. Treat it as a support case rather than assuming the update caused it.

If it is stuck on the Meta logo or “Applying software update”
First, confirm that the headset has been adequately charged and remove all unusual accessories. If the screen is still changing, allow the installation to continue. If it is clearly frozen, perform one controlled forced restart by holding the Power button for about 10 seconds.

If the same screen returns repeatedly:
- Charge the headset fully again.
- Remove battery straps, USB accessories, and other peripherals.
- Try Meta’s official Quest Software Update Tool, if it is available for your model and computer configuration.
- Contact Meta Support if the official recovery method fails.
The Software Update Tool is an official computer-and-USB recovery route for applying or reinstalling headset software when an ordinary over-the-air update fails. It is not the same as downloading firmware from an unofficial mirror. Do not flash random files from Reddit, forums, or third-party websites.
Community reports document Quest 3 and Quest 3S devices stuck in update loops, including USB Update Mode and Applying software update cases. These reports show that failures happen, but they do not establish an incidence rate or prove that long-term storage was the cause.
Factory reset: a last resort
Do not factory-reset a headset simply because its first boot after storage is slow. A reset erases local data and settings and may not repair a hardware fault or defective update.

- Turn the headset off.
- Hold Power + Volume Down until the boot screen appears.
- Use the volume buttons to highlight Factory Reset.
- Press the Power button.
- Highlight Yes, then press Power again.
Exact menus can vary by model and software version. Read the options carefully before confirming.
A factory reset removes local headset data. Purchased content remains associated with your Meta account and can generally be downloaded again after setup, but app-save recovery depends on whether each app supports Meta Quest Cloud Backup and whether a usable backup exists. Meta support has warned that cloud-backup availability depends on the individual developer’s implementation. A reset is therefore not a guarantee that all game progress will return.

A lithium-ion battery can lose charge while stored. Extended charging may revive an ordinary deeply discharged headset, but physical warning signs require a different response.

Contact Meta or an authorized service route through the official support page. A battery strap can help prevent future low-battery interruptions, but it cannot repair a damaged internal battery, charging port, or corrupted installation.
Could a particular Quest update be defective?
Yes, an individual rollout can have a device-specific defect. Users have historically reported boot loops, charging problems, and other failures after particular releases. But user reports alone are not enough to declare a current firmware version dangerous, and the available evidence does not show that inactivity itself causes these failures.
Check current, model-specific notices from Meta before installing if there is an active incident. Do not assume that a warning about one release applies to every Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3, or Quest 3S—or that it remains current after a later update.

- Do not leave the headset permanently unupdated because of a general social-media warning.
- Do not begin an update with a nearly empty battery or questionable charger.
- Do not repeatedly force-restart the headset while installation is visibly progressing.
- Do not factory-reset before trying charging and official recovery steps.
- Do not install firmware from unofficial downloads or random mirrors.
- Do not keep charging a headset that is swollen, damaged, abnormally hot, or emitting an unusual smell.
The practical decision tree
