If you want the most direct follow-up to Dead of the Brain, start with Dead of the Brain 2. It is the direct sequel and the only recommendation here confirmed as part of the same story line. For different flavors of PC-98 horror, add the community-suggested Marine Philt and Necronomicon, then use PC-98.org’s Gore listings—Corpse Party, Ballade for Maria, and Elle—as discovery leads rather than guaranteed matches.
Content note: October 2026 coverage describes the Dead of the Brain games as gory exploitation horror with sexual content and violence. PC Gamer specifically warns that the sequel contains sexual violence. The available descriptions are not complete content guides for every game below.

Quick answer: which game should you play first?
| Game | What is established | Why it may fit | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dead of the Brain 2 | Direct sequel; listed in the PC-98 adventure index | Closest narrative and thematic continuation | English-release timing was teased but not dated |
| Marine Philt | Recommended in a PC-98 community discussion; one commenter identifies the same developer | Potential same-developer path | Genre, mechanics, language and current access are not established here |
| Necronomicon | Recommended in the same discussion; a commenter describes it as Japanese-language | Another horror adventure to investigate | Translation and official availability are unconfirmed |
| Corpse Party | Listed under PC-98.org’s Gore category | Useful lead for graphic horror discovery | Similarity to the zombie premise and command system is not established |
| Ballade for Maria | Listed under PC-98.org’s Gore category | Broadens the search beyond one franchise | Gameplay, language and access details are not stated |
| Elle | Listed under PC-98.org’s Gore category | Another indexed title for exploration | Its relationship to Dead of the Brain is not established |
That evidence makes the order straightforward: play the sequel when you can, treat Marine Philt and Necronomicon as leads requiring verification, and browse the Gore category when you want more names rather than a guaranteed mechanical match.

What makes Dead of the Brain a useful benchmark
The reference point is a PC-98 horror adventure about Cole and his scientist friend, Dr. Cooger. According to an October 8, 2026 report, Cooger revives the dead with a serum, setting off a zombie outbreak. The game mixes visual-novel-style dialogue with command-based exploration and quick reactions to threats on screen.

The gameplay profile
- Conversation: Story scenes use a visual-novel-like presentation, so reading and following character exchanges are central activities.
- Interaction: Exploration uses commands such as Look, Use and Get, rather than a modern free-roaming control scheme.
- Pressure: Some moments require fast reactions to an on-screen threat, interrupting the slower investigation rhythm.
- Presentation: The announced modern release is intended to preserve the pixel art and FM soundtrack while adding optional hints and more forgiving checkpoints.
The original structure is reportedly retained, so newcomers should not assume the game has been redesigned around contemporary adventure-game conveniences. That combination—zombie premise, command-driven investigation, dialogue-heavy pacing and occasional reaction prompts—is the standard to use when judging every suggested follow-up.
Dead of the Brain 2: the closest possible follow-up
Dead of the Brain 2 is the direct sequel and appears in the PC-98 adventure index. For someone asking what to play after the first game, no other title in this list has a stronger documented connection.
Release and language status
An October 8, 2026 report said the publisher had teased a future English release for the sequel, but gave no release date. That is a statement of intent, not a launch announcement. As of October 13, 2026, do not treat an English version of the sequel as scheduled.

Why it belongs at the top of your list
The sequel is the only choice here that extends the same named series. It is therefore the sensible next step if your priority is continuity of characters, setting and outbreak-focused horror. The available evidence does not establish a new control scheme, a different dialogue-to-exploration balance or a separate content profile, so those are points to verify rather than assumptions to make.

Marine Philt: a same-developer lead, not a confirmed clone
A PC-98 community discussion recommends Marine Philt, and one commenter identifies it as coming from the same developer as Dead of the Brain. That makes it an intriguing next search, especially for players interested in authorship and period-specific design.
The recommendation does not establish that Marine Philt is a zombie story, uses the same command verbs, or reproduces the same pacing. Current language support and legitimate access were also not established. Before committing time to it, look for a title-specific manual, screenshots or a trustworthy catalog entry that confirms the format you want.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How to approach it
- Confirm the exact PC-98 release and title spelling; older Japanese computer catalogs can contain similarly romanized names.
- Check whether the listing identifies an adventure format or another type of game.
- Verify the language of the release and whether any translation is authorized and usable with your copy.
- Use the same content caution applied to Dead of the Brain until a reliable description says otherwise.
Necronomicon: supernatural investigation with a language caveat
The same community discussion recommends Necronomicon. A commenter describes the game as Japanese-language and says they are working on a translation. That is community information, not confirmation of an official English edition or a completed patch.
Choose it when you are comfortable investigating a Japanese release or waiting for reliable translation information. Do not promise yourself an English playthrough based on a work-in-progress comment. The available material also does not prove that its mechanics, setting or tone match the outbreak-focused adventure structure of Dead of the Brain.
Questions to answer before playing
- Is the copy you found the PC-98 version rather than a later port?
- Is the translation complete, and does it cover menus as well as dialogue?
- Does the translator require an original disk image or another legally obtained base game?
- Are there warnings about crashes, text corruption or timing-sensitive scenes?
Those checks matter more here than a simple genre label because the only current language information is a commenter’s description.

Three broader Gore-category discoveries
PC-98.org places Corpse Party, Ballade for Maria and Elle in its Gore category. The category is valuable for finding more graphic horror, but it does not say that any of the three shares Dead of the Brain’s zombie premise, point-and-click-like command play or quick-reaction scenes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCorpse Party
Use the category entry as a starting point for research into another gory PC-98 title. The evidence available here does not establish its exact relationship to the outbreak story, its dialogue-to-interaction ratio, its current language options or an official way to play it today.
Ballade for Maria
This is another Gore-indexed name for readers who want to widen their search beyond the Dead of the Brain series. Treat the listing as a genre pointer only. Title-level details such as controls, translation status and legitimate access are not stated.
Elle
Elle appears in the same category and can serve the same discovery purpose. No evidence supplied here establishes a zombie narrative, command-based investigation, English support or modern distribution, so verify each of those independently before choosing it as your next game.

| Your priority | Start with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Continuation of the same story | Dead of the Brain 2 | It is the documented direct sequel. |
| A possible connection through the developer | Marine Philt | A community commenter identifies the same developer, but other similarities need checking. |
| Trying a Japanese-language horror lead | Necronomicon | The community description specifically flags Japanese language. |
| Finding more graphic-horror names | Corpse Party, Ballade for Maria, Elle | All three are listed in PC-98.org’s Gore category. |
| Modern official English access | The announced Dead of the Brain release | Steam support was announced; the October 30, 2026 date was still in the future on October 13. |
If command-based exploration is the deciding feature, none of the alternatives has been verified here as a match. If language is decisive, only the announced English support for the first game is documented; the sequel’s English timing and the other titles’ language status remain unsettled.

AUTOMATON WEST reported that Dead of the Brain was scheduled for Steam on October 30, 2026 with official English support. On October 13, that date had not arrived, so describe the release as announced rather than available. Store availability and publisher notices should be checked again when you are ready to buy or install.
The same report said the publisher teased English releases for Dead of the Brain 2 and other FairyTale horror titles without giving a sequel date. That distinction prevents a common mistake: an announced localization is not an announced launch window.
Fan translations offer another route for both original games, according to PC Gamer, but they can involve technical and legal requirements not covered by the report. Do not assume that a patch includes the game, works with every dump or replaces the need for an original copy.

The October 2026 descriptions characterize Dead of the Brain as gory and place it in an exploitation-horror context involving sexual content and violence. PC Gamer’s warning about sexual violence in the sequel is especially important for players deciding whether to continue the series.

No complete warning list is established for Marine Philt, Necronomicon, Corpse Party, Ballade for Maria or Elle. Their appearance in a recommendation or Gore index should not be treated as a detailed account of every trigger. Seek title-specific documentation when a particular subject is a deal-breaker.
A practical play order
- Finish or revisit the first game. Note whether its dialogue-heavy investigation, command verbs and reaction scenes are the parts you most want repeated.
- Put Dead of the Brain 2 next. It is the only documented direct continuation, while its English release remains undated.
- Use Marine Philt as a developer-focused experiment. Verify genre, language and access before expecting a similar game.
- Try Necronomicon if Japanese text is acceptable. Confirm translation completeness and installation requirements first.
- Browse the Gore category for breadth. Investigate Corpse Party, Ballade for Maria and Elle as candidates, not as guaranteed substitutes.
What the evidence does—and does not—support
The strongest claim is narrow: Dead of the Brain 2 is the closest follow-up because it is the direct sequel. The next tier consists of community suggestions, where the connection is either a reported developer link or a general horror recommendation. The Gore-category titles are discovery tools, not confirmed mechanical or narrative equivalents.
No verified prices, retail inventory, physical editions or title-by-title performance tests are established for these recommendations. The useful comparison is therefore about premise, format, language, access and content warnings—not an invented ranking of quality.
