Controller-friendly PC games tend to reward analog movement, directional combat, precise timing, or steering. That makes a gamepad a natural fit for many platformers, action games, and driving games—but it does not make a controller universally better. Your preferred input and the specific game’s support matter.
How to choose a PC game for a controller
Think about the actions you repeat most. A stick can make continuous movement and steering feel intuitive, while buttons and triggers suit many directional attacks and timed actions. A mouse may be preferable when play depends on cursor precision, and a keyboard can be more convenient when a game uses many hotkeys.
- Input fit: Look for movement, combat, timing, or steering that maps naturally to sticks, buttons, and triggers.
- Support certainty: Check the individual game’s Steam listing or publisher support page. A game running through Steam is not automatically compatible with a controller.
- Your preference: These are reasons a controller may suit a game’s mechanics, not proof that every player will prefer one.
PC games and genres that can suit a controller
Hollow Knight: platforming and exploration
Hollow Knight’s Steam listing describes it as a platformer and labels it “Full Controller Support.” Its movement and platforming make it a clear candidate to try with a gamepad. The label establishes support, not that a controller is the best choice for every player.
Action games such as Elden Ring
PCGamesN’s controller-games guide includes Elden Ring as an editorial pick. Action combat involving directional movement and timed inputs can make a controller appealing, but preference varies. Confirm the current PC listing or publisher guidance for controller support before buying or setting up a game.

Driving games
A controller can be a practical alternative for driving games when you do not have a steering wheel: analog sticks and triggers provide more graduated steering and acceleration input than simple keyboard presses. This is a use-case recommendation, not a claim that a controller replaces a wheel or suits every driving game. Check the particular game’s support details.
Check controller support before you play
Steam cautions: “Any Steam game can be played while in Big Picture mode, though not all Steam games support the use of a controller.” Steam Big Picture mode is designed for controller use, including TV and couch setups, but launching a game there does not guarantee that the game accepts gamepad input.
