Use PCSX2 if you want to emulate PS2 games on a Windows, Linux, or macOS computer. AetherSX2 was built for Android using PCSX2 technology, but its developer announced that development is indefinitely suspended. Choose it only if Android is essential and you accept that it is no longer actively maintained.
This is primarily a choice between platforms and project status, not a verdict from head-to-head performance testing. Either way, whether a particular game runs well depends on the game and your device.

What are PCSX2 and AetherSX2?
PCSX2: the desktop emulator
PCSX2 is a free, open-source PlayStation 2 emulator maintained by the PCSX2 project. Its stated purpose is to let people play PS2 games on a computer. The project offers stable and nightly build routes for Windows, Linux, and macOS, along with options such as higher internal resolution, save states, patches, and controller support.
AetherSX2: the Android-focused option
AetherSX2 was an Android implementation based on PCSX2 technology. The PCSX2 team introduced it in 2021 as a mobile project by developer Tahlreth. The developer later said work was indefinitely suspended. The update noted that existing builds might remain usable, but that does not amount to ongoing support or a current compatibility guarantee.

Is PCSX2 better than AetherSX2?
For a computer, PCSX2 is the straightforward choice: it is the official desktop project and continues to offer stable and nightly builds. For Android, AetherSX2 may be relevant because it was designed for mobile devices, but it is discontinued. There is no basis here for claiming that either emulator runs every game better or faster; no side-by-side performance results or current AetherSX2 compatibility matrix are established.
The practical distinction is maintenance and platform. PCSX2 has current official desktop build routes and documentation. AetherSX2’s Android focus does not change the fact that its developer announced suspended development. Avoid downloading APKs from random sites: the developer warned about impersonators and unofficial sources.

Will your PS2 games run on PCSX2?
Check the exact game in the PCSX2 compatibility database. It includes title, serial, CRC, status, and latest testing fields, which can help distinguish releases and versions. A broad claim that “PS2 games work” is not a substitute for checking the game you intend to play.
Compatibility and speed vary by game. The PCSX2 documentation notes that a configuration change that helps one title can create problems in another, so treat database entries as game-specific evidence rather than a promise that every setup will behave identically.

What computer does PCSX2 need?
The PCSX2 FAQ gives the following hardware guidance. These are project recommendations, not guarantees of a particular game’s speed; the FAQ says demanding games may struggle even around the minimum tier and that requirements vary by game. Scores below are PassMark guidance cited by the project.
| Component | Minimum guidance | Recommended guidance |
|---|---|---|
| CPU instruction set | SSE4.1 | AVX2 |
| CPU | Two physical cores with SMT; single-thread score near or above 1,500 | Four or more physical cores; single-thread score near or above 2,000 |
| Graphics API | Direct3D 11 feature level 10.0, OpenGL 3.3, or Vulkan 1.1 | Direct3D 12, OpenGL 4.6, Vulkan 1.3, or Metal on macOS |
| GPU performance | Roughly 3,000 PassMark G3D | Roughly 6,000 PassMark G3D |
| Video memory | 2 GB | 4 GB |
| System memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Operating system | Minimum OS versions are listed in the current PCSX2 FAQ; consult it for your operating system. | |
The FAQ associates the recommended GPU tier with about 3× internal resolution, roughly 1080p. Targeting 6×, roughly 4K, calls for a stronger GPU. These figures are PC project guidance and should not be compared directly with an Android phone chipset. Current official AetherSX2 requirements and Android-version support were not established.

What do you need to set up PCSX2?
- Choose a build and install it. Get a stable or nightly build through the official PCSX2 project site.
- Provide a PS2 BIOS dump. PCSX2 requires a BIOS dumped from a PlayStation 2 console. Do not use unauthorized BIOS downloads.
- Use your game disc or a game image. PCSX2 supports launching discs, but the FAQ recommends dumping games to ISO images: some games can run slowly when read directly because a PC optical drive does not behave like the console’s continuously spinning drive. Use games you own, and do not obtain unauthorized game downloads.
- Check the title’s compatibility entry. Search the database for the specific game and release before troubleshooting or expecting a particular result.
- Connect a controller if you want one. A gamepad is optional. The FAQ says Windows includes XInput bindings and can bind XInput or DirectInput controllers; Linux and macOS automatically detect recognizable controllers through SDL.
Can you use PCSX2 on Android?
The PCSX2 project describes PCSX2 as a computer emulator and officially supports Windows, Linux, and macOS. AetherSX2, by contrast, was the Android-focused project based on PCSX2. This comparison does not establish a current Android version of PCSX2 or current AetherSX2 support across Android releases, so check official project information rather than assuming the desktop PCSX2 build works on a phone.
