Pepper poppers are usually halved peppers filled with a creamy cheese mixture, then baked, air-fried, or finished with a topping or coating. Choose jalapeños for the familiar spicy version, baby sweet peppers for a gentler bite, bacon and pineapple for a sweet-savory filling, pepperoni for a quick topping, or seasoned panko for a crisp breaded style.

All three recipes use cream cheese, but their toppings and coatings change the texture and cooking instructions. Follow the method for the particular style rather than transferring a temperature or time from one recipe to another.
How to prepare jalapeños and fill them
For the cited recipes, jalapeños are halved lengthwise to make boats for the filling. Del Monte specifically recommends removing the seeds and ribs; this also reduces the pepper’s heat. If you want a milder, sweeter popper, use the baby tri-color bell pepper variation in that recipe instead of assuming a different jalapeño will have the same heat.
Make the cheese mixture according to the chosen recipe. Hormel combines cream cheese and cheddar with green onion and garlic, then adds pepperoni on top. Del Monte pairs cream cheese with pineapple and wraps each filled half in bacon or turkey bacon. Illinois Extension adds bacon bits to its cheese filling and coats the filled halves in egg substitute and seasoned panko.

Oven-baked and air-fryer directions
Hormel pepperoni-topped poppers
Hormel’s recipe uses 8 medium jalapeños, 4 ounces cream cheese, 1/3 cup shredded cheddar, green onion, garlic, salt, black pepper, and 16 pepperoni slices. Its oven directions call for 425°F for 15–20 minutes. For the air fryer, Hormel specifies 400°F for 8–10 minutes and notes that temperature controls vary by appliance. Del Monte pineapple and bacon poppers
Del Monte calls for 8–12 fresh jalapeños, an 8-ounce package of reduced-fat cream cheese, pineapple chunks, and bacon or turkey bacon. Set a wire rack over a lined rimmed baking sheet, arrange the bacon-wrapped poppers on it, and bake at 400°F for 30–35 minutes, until the bacon is cooked and browned. The recipe says the assembled poppers may be prepared ahead and refrigerated for up to four hours before baking. Its recipe page includes the sweet baby bell pepper variation.

University of Illinois Extension breaded poppers
For this style, halve 10 jalapeños lengthwise, fill them with a mixture of reduced-fat cream cheese, reduced-fat sharp cheddar, and bacon bits, then coat them with egg substitute and seasoned panko. Bake at 350°F for about 30–35 minutes, then broil for 1–2 minutes to crisp the tops. Use the ingredient quantities and assembly steps in the University of Illinois Extension recipe.
Picking a method that suits the result
- Choose the air fryer for Hormel’s pepperoni-topped version when you want its shorter appliance-specific cooking route.
- Choose bacon-wrapped baking for Del Monte’s pineapple filling; its wire-rack setup lets the bacon cook and brown around the poppers.
- Choose breaded baking for a panko coating and a crisped top; the Illinois Extension recipe adds a short broil after baking.
- Choose baby sweet peppers in the Del Monte variation when jalapeños are too hot for your preference.
A note on jalapeño size
UC Davis Agricultural Sustainability Institute describes a jalapeño breeding goal for a moderately spicy pepper with a larger cavity that can hold more cream cheese filling.
