Yes. On July 2, 2025, Xbox announced it was stopping development of the Perfect Dark reboot and closing The Initiative. The game was never released. The cancellation ended The Initiative’s Perfect Dark development partnership with Crystal Dynamics, but that does not establish that Xbox and Crystal Dynamics ended all work on every project.
What happened to Perfect Dark?
Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty announced on July 2, 2025, that Xbox would stop development of Perfect Dark and close The Initiative. Contemporary reports said the Perfect Dark partnership with co-developer Crystal Dynamics ended as a result. Game Developer’s report and Insider Gaming’s report covered the announcement.
Booty said in an internal message to employees, as quoted by Insider Gaming: “We did not make these choices lightly, as each project and team represent years of effort, imagination, and commitment.” Xbox described the decision as part of adjusting priorities and focusing resources amid a changing industry.
Was Xbox still working with Crystal Dynamics?
Not on the cancelled Perfect Dark reboot: the development partnership ended when the project was stopped. Xbox’s June 9, 2024 preview had described The Initiative as co-developing the game with Crystal Dynamics and other Team Perfect Dark partners. The available reporting does not establish whether Xbox and Crystal Dynamics ended every other possible project or business relationship.

What was the cancelled game supposed to be?
Xbox’s official June 9, 2024 Perfect Dark preview described a single-player, first-person secret-agent thriller set in a near-future Cairo. Xbox called it “a first-person secret agent thriller in a near-future world.” The planned experience included mission choices, traversal, gadgets, stealth, and combat. These were features of the announced design, not a description of a finished or released game.
Why was Perfect Dark cancelled?

Xbox said it was adjusting priorities and focusing resources in a changing industry. This is the official explanation reported at the time of the cancellation.

Reported talks about continuing the project
A September 3, 2025 report from MeriStation, attributing its account to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, said Embracer and Microsoft discussed a possible continuation involving Take-Two. The report said the talks failed over intellectual-property ownership. That is secondary reporting about a proposed route to save the project, not Xbox’s official reason for cancelling it. How much of the game had been made?
In an interview reported by PC Gamer on December 22, 2025, Joanna Dark actor Alix Wilton Regan said she worked on dialogue and performance capture from 2023 through 2025 and had recorded entire chapters. She also said, “I did not see it coming. I was absolutely blindsided when the project was defunded.” Those are Regan’s statements about her own work and reaction; they do not establish the game’s overall completion level.
