What happened to the Perfect Dark reboot?
On July 2, 2025, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty told staff that development of Perfect Dark would stop and The Initiative would close. Xbox confirmed the studio’s closure, and the decision also ended its development partnership with Crystal Dynamics.
Windows Central reported that The Initiative had been open for seven years at the time of its closure. That describes the studio’s tenure, not the length of the game’s development. Windows Central’s report and Game Developer’s coverage detail the announcement and its immediate effects.
Windows Central reported that Microsoft would provide affected staff severance and support, including career-transition assistance and, where possible, opportunities to explore other Xbox roles.

Why did Xbox cancel Perfect Dark?
Booty described the decision as part of a portfolio-wide change in priorities, saying: “These decisions, along with other changes across our teams, reflect a broader effort to adjust priorities and focus resources to set up our teams for greater success within a changing industry landscape.” He also said the choices were not made lightly, given the years of effort and commitment invested in the projects and teams.
That is the clearest public explanation from Xbox. Reports described the project’s development history as turbulent, but they do not establish a more detailed official cause for the cancellation. It would be speculation to name a particular internal problem as the reason.

What was the reboot supposed to be?
Xbox’s June 2024 description presented the reboot as a single-player, first-person secret-agent thriller set in a near-future world. It was planned around missions with choices in how to complete them, mixing traversal and parkour, gadgets, stealth, melee, and gunplay.
The game was to feature a new story and universe, drawing inspiration from elements of the first two Perfect Dark games. Xbox did not describe it as a remake or a continuation of their story. The Initiative was developing it with Crystal Dynamics and other partners under the Team Perfect Dark name. Xbox’s project description provides the announced design details.

Was the 2024 gameplay footage real?
Former Initiative level designer Adam McDonald told PC Gamer that the footage shown in 2024 was in-engine and represented a vertical slice: a focused showcase of selected gameplay, rather than a finished game or proof that every system was complete. He said parkour and much of the hacking and deception were real, while combat was arranged to work best along the route shown.
McDonald characterized it as “a pretty typical ‘vertical slice’” and said he did not think the team had been particularly deceptive. His account is a former developer’s description, not an official audit of the project or evidence that the full game was close to completion. What did The Initiative’s former head say?
In September 2025, former studio head Darrell Gallagher said his time at Xbox had ended “with the wind-down of Perfect Dark and The Initiative,” and that he was proud of the team he had assembled and led. His statement was a personal response to the closure, not an explanation of Xbox’s decision. Pure Xbox reported his statement.
