Xbox debuted the first gameplay from its Perfect Dark reboot at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 9, 2024. The trailer introduced Joanna Dark’s mission in a near-future Cairo and showed stealth, gadgets, traversal and combat. A later PC Gamer report dated July 4, 2025 said Microsoft canceled the reboot and closed developer The Initiative; the sources available here do not include a primary company announcement confirming that decision.
When did the reboot’s first gameplay trailer appear?
Xbox showed the trailer during its June 9, 2024 Xbox Games Showcase. Xbox Wire described it as the first look at gameplay from a reboot of the classic secret-agent series. Co-developer Crystal Dynamics also called it a first in-game look. The official video is titled “Perfect Dark – Gameplay Reveal – Xbox Games Showcase 2024.” Xbox Wire’s trailer breakdown and Crystal Dynamics’ announcement document the reveal.

What kind of game was Xbox announcing?
Xbox described the project as a single-player, first-person secret-agent thriller set in the near future. Its announced design combined mission choices with stealth, gadgets, parkour and other traversal, melee combat, and gunplay. The developers said they were drawing on first-person shooters, immersive sims and stealth-action games, rather than treating the project as only one of those genres. These were design intentions described during the reveal, not evidence of a completed or released game. Xbox’s gameplay overview outlines those plans.
What were the story and setting?
The premise placed Joanna Dark in a world altered by environmental disasters known as “The Cascade.” In Xbox’s account, the corporation Core Mantis establishes an ecological restoration network in Cairo. The project brings a newly walled city and other corporations into the picture, setting up tensions around environmental damage, restoration and corporate interests. Joanna’s mission in Cairo
Joanna is an agent for dataDyne. In the trailer’s mission, she enters Cairo’s Garden City district to find and apprehend Daniel Carrington. Carrington infiltrates her augmented-reality system, drawing her into further mysteries. Xbox identified Alix Wilton Regan as Joanna’s voice actor and Elissa Bibaud as the character’s visual likeness.
What gameplay did the trailer show?
The reveal presented stealth, investigation, traversal and combat as connected options, with the player able to choose how to approach situations. Xbox described the following elements:

- Voice analysis and impersonation: A gadget could analyze non-player characters’ voices and create vocal deepfakes to fool security systems, impersonate characters or cause distractions.
- Investigation: Scanning characters was described as a way to gather information.
- Different approaches to combat: Xbox outlined lethal and non-lethal weapons, close-quarters combat and abilities for taking down multiple enemies, alongside the choice to act quietly or loudly.
- Traversal and interaction: Parkour and other movement, environmental interaction, gadgets and unlockable abilities were presented as parts of the intended design.
These are features Xbox described for the reboot in 2024; the trailer does not establish that they became features in a released game. The Xbox gameplay explanation gives the broader design context.

PC Gamer reported on July 4, 2025, that Microsoft canceled the reboot and closed The Initiative amid company cuts. That report is the cancellation evidence available here; it is secondary reporting, not a primary Xbox or Microsoft announcement. Accordingly, the 2024 footage should be understood as a reveal of a project’s planned gameplay, not as footage for a game that was subsequently released.
