“Periwinkle” can mean a pale purple-blue color, an evergreen flowering plant, or a small sea snail. The context tells you which one: a color description points to the shade, garden writing usually means a plant such as Vinca minor, and a marine reference means the snail.
What does “periwinkle” mean?
The word has three distinct common meanings. They are not three forms of the same thing: the plant and the marine animal are biologically unrelated, while the color name is associated with the plant’s flowers.
| Meaning | What it refers to | Common context |
|---|---|---|
| Color | A pale lavender-blue or purplish blue | Descriptions of colors, clothing, art, or objects |
| Plant | A flowering plant; common periwinkle in gardens is Vinca minor | Gardening and landscaping |
| Animal | A small sea snail, also called a “winkle” in the UK | Coastal or food references |
What color is periwinkle?
Periwinkle is generally a pale lavender-blue or purplish blue. Its name is linked to the blue or lavender-blue flowers of periwinkle plants, though exact color renderings can vary between descriptions and products.
The Missouri Department of Conservation says the first use of “periwinkle” in English as a color name was in 1922. It also notes that Crayola introduced a crayon called “periwinkle” in 1949. These are historical dates, not claims about current color standards or product availability. Missouri Department of Conservation: Common Periwinkle.

- Vinca Periwinkle is suitable for garden beds, landscape borders, containers, and as ground cover. Its dense growth habit and continuous blooming characteristic add consistent color accents to gardens and outdoor spaces.
- When sowing, gently press the seeds into the surface of moist seed-starting mix; do not cover them, as light aids germination.
- Maintain consistent soil moisture until seedlings are established. It is recommended to start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before transplanting outdoors after the danger of frost has passed.
- These flowers can be used to edge walkways, fill slopes, or provide base color in mixed flower borders. They are also suitable for balcony window boxes and hanging baskets, creating a cascading visual effect.
- Choose a location with full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Direct sowing outdoors should be done when soil temperatures are consistently above 70°F (21°C).
What is a periwinkle plant?
In garden use, “common periwinkle” usually refers to Vinca minor, an evergreen plant with blue or lavender-blue flowers. The common name is not a precise species label: dictionaries also list other plants, including Catharanthus, as periwinkles. Check the botanical name when identifying or buying a plant rather than assuming every plant sold under that name is the same species.
Can periwinkle become invasive?
It can be ecologically problematic outside its native context. The Missouri Department of Conservation reports that common periwinkle can form mats and outcompete native plants. That warning concerns Vinca minor in the contexts described by the guide; it does not mean that every plant called periwinkle is invasive everywhere. Local guidance and the exact species matter.

Are periwinkles snails?
Yes. A periwinkle is also a small sea snail; Cambridge notes that “winkle” is the UK term. In a coastal, marine-life, or food context, “periwinkle” may refer to this animal rather than a flower or shade. Cambridge Dictionary: periwinkle.

- Color or design: it means the pale purple-blue shade.
- Garden, leaves, or flowers: it means a plant; look for a botanical name such as Vinca minor.
- Sea, shore, or shellfish: it means the small marine snail.
The plant and snail names have separate word histories, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation: the plant name is traced to Latin vincapervinca, while the snail name has distinct Latin/Greek and Old English roots. The shared spelling does not indicate a shared biological origin.
