There are ten romance options in Persona 5 Royal. This ranking is an editorial judgment, not a canonical order: the game presents Confidants as bonds built through trust, and ATLUS describes those relationships as part of a wider system that can improve the protagonist’s abilities. The ranking weighs Confidant-story development, chemistry with Joker, emotional payoff in optional scenes, and how memorable the route feels in the wider story. Your order may differ if you value one of those qualities more than the others.

Who can you romance in Persona 5 Royal?
Push Square’s romance guide lists ten routes: five for Phantom Thief teammates and five for other Confidants. Kasumi Yoshizawa is the Royal-specific option; her Confidant progression is limited until later in the game and tied to Royal’s new semester. The other routes become available as their characters enter the story or through their respective city activities.

2. Makoto Niijima
Makoto’s reserved, determined nature makes the romance feel earned. The appeal is in watching a relationship develop through respect and steady companionship, rather than relying on a dramatic shift in character.
3. Hifumi Togo
Hifumi offers one of the more composed and self-directed dynamics. Her route is a strong choice for players who prefer quieter chemistry and a character whose interests and goals remain central to her identity.
4. Futaba Sakura
Futaba’s connection with Joker is built around trust and familiarity, which gives her route a close, personal feel. Its playful energy is a strength, though it will not suit every player’s preferred romantic tone.

5. Haru Okumura
Haru’s gentleness and sincerity make her route easy to like. She ranks in the middle because the relationship is sweet, but her smaller footprint in the wider story can leave less room for the romance to resonate beyond its own scenes.

Takemi’s sharp wit and assured manner make for distinctive chemistry. Her route stands apart from the teammate romances, but the relationship’s appeal is more about the two characters’ contrasting personalities than a deep connection to the main plot.
7. Kasumi Yoshizawa
Kasumi is a major Royal addition, and her route is closely associated with the expanded story. It ranks lower here because its later progression gives the relationship less room across the full game than routes available earlier.

8. Sadayo Kawakami
Kawakami has memorable character material and an unusual setup, which can make her route stand out. That same premise is also a matter of taste, and players who find it uncomfortable may not connect with the romance.
9. Chihaya Mifune
Chihaya’s energy and fortune-teller persona make her a distinctive Confidant. Her romance is enjoyable as a character-focused detour, but it has a less direct relationship to the Phantom Thieves’ central story.

10. Ichiko Ohya
Ohya adds an adult, journalist’s perspective to the cast, and that makes her route different from the others. It lands last in this ranking because the emotional payoff may feel less substantial beside the more fully resonant routes above.

How romance works in Persona 5 Royal
Romance is connected to progressing a character’s Confidant route: the broad process is to meet and spend time with that character until a relationship opportunity becomes available. Confidants are not only romance options; ATLUS describes them as bonds built through trust that can broaden and improve abilities. The game also offers friendship and other social activities, so romance is one possible outcome of the relationship system rather than its sole purpose.
For exact availability, social-stat requirements, deadlines, and dialogue choices, use a dedicated route walkthrough. The overview here does not provide a choice-by-choice guide, and route timing depends on story progression.
Can you romance more than one character?
Yes. Push Square’s guide reports that you can pursue multiple romances in a single playthrough, with a later consequence. Because this is a spoiler-light ranking, the consequence is not described here.
