Start with Persona 5 Royal if you want the broadest introduction to the series. Its Steam description combines the elements most people associate with Persona: building relationships, exploring modern Tokyo, crawling through dungeons, customizing a party and fighting with turn-based combat. That makes it the best default recommendation for most newcomers, although it is an editorial judgment rather than an official ATLUS-mandated play order.
Choose Persona 4 Golden instead if a rural serial-murder mystery and coming-of-age story sound more appealing. Choose Persona 3 Reload or Persona 3 Portable if the Persona 3 premise is the reason you are interested. If you already know you want grid-based tactics, Persona 5 Tactica is the specialist choice; Persona 5 Strikers is a later Phantom Thieves adventure to consider after you like that cast.

What kind of series is Persona?
Persona is an RPG series set in modern-day Japan. Its stories follow teenagers who maintain ordinary school and social lives while confronting supernatural threats. The central idea is that young people awaken as Persona-users, giving them access to supernatural powers while they investigate problems affecting their communities.
That mixture is more important than release order when choosing a first game. Each entry presents a different cast, town or city, mystery and version history. The games share themes and systems, but the official series framing does not require a newcomer to begin with the oldest available title. You can therefore select the premise and combat style that most interest you rather than treating the Steam catalog as a mandatory sequence.

Why Persona 5 Royal is the default recommendation
Persona 5 Royal most clearly demonstrates the series formula in one package. Its official Steam description foregrounds the Phantom Thieves, relationships, Tokyo exploration, dungeon crawling, party customization and turn-based combat. A first-time player can therefore see how Persona alternates between daily-life decisions and supernatural missions instead of experiencing only one side of the design.
The Tokyo setting also gives Royal an immediately recognizable sense of place. You spend time moving through a contemporary city, meeting people and developing social bonds, then enter hostile dungeons where your party uses Personas and traditional RPG tactics. Those activities are interlocked: time spent with people and managing your schedule affects how you approach the adventure, while combat and exploration provide the momentum for the larger story.
Royal is an expanded version of the original Persona 5. In ATLUS West’s launch FAQ from the game’s original 2020 release context, Royal is described as adding “an entirely new semester and new characters.” That distinction matters if you see older recommendations for the original game: Royal is the relevant Steam choice for a new PC player who wants the expanded edition rather than the earlier release.

When Persona 4 Golden is the better first game
Persona 4 Golden is the strongest alternative for readers who prioritize mystery and character relationships over a big-city fantasy. Its Steam listing places the story in rural Inaba and begins with a chain of serial murders. The resulting tone is a small-town investigation and coming-of-age story: the setting is quieter, but the questions surrounding the murders create a persistent sense of unease.
That premise changes what you notice while playing. Instead of choosing Royal’s metropolitan Phantom Thieves setup, you follow a group of young people whose personal lives and local relationships are tied to an unfolding mystery. If the phrase “small-town murder investigation” is more compelling to you than “supernatural heist team in Tokyo,” Golden is not a consolation prize; it is the correct first choice for your taste.
The game remains a turn-based Persona RPG, so you still manage a party, explore dangerous areas and balance daily activities with investigation. The Steam listing says Golden is best experienced with a controller. Treat that as an optional setup recommendation rather than a requirement: a standard PC controller may make navigation and combat more comfortable, but the listing does not establish that keyboard and mouse play is impossible.

Should you start with Persona 3 Reload or Persona 3 Portable?
Both Persona 3 Reload and Persona 3 Portable are available in the Steam catalog. If the Persona 3 premise is what drew you to the series, you can begin with one of these rather than following storefront release order.
The available official catalog information does not support declaring one edition categorically better than the other. They are separate versions, and their current Steam descriptions are the appropriate place to compare the features, presentation and edition details that matter to you. Check those listings immediately before buying because platform pages and edition information can change.
Choose the Persona 3 route when the premise matters most
A Persona 3-first decision makes sense when you are specifically interested in that game’s setting and themes, even if Royal would be the broader default recommendation for an undecided newcomer. Selecting Persona 3 first is a preference-based choice, not a mistake or a requirement to complete earlier games.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not treat the catalog as a verdict between the two versions
Availability in the Steam catalog confirms that both versions can be considered; it does not, by itself, answer which one fits your preferred presentation. Read the current descriptions for each edition and decide using the features they explicitly list rather than assuming that a newer release automatically makes the other obsolete.

What to play after Persona 5 Royal
Persona 5 Strikers
Persona 5 Strikers is listed in the Steam Persona catalog, and ATLUS describes it as a new Phantom Thieves adventure. That makes it a natural follow-up for players who finish Royal and want more time with that cast. The available descriptions do not establish a universal prerequisite or an exact continuity order that every player must follow, so present Strikers as an optional next step rather than a mandatory sequel assignment.
Persona 5 Tactica
Persona 5 Tactica uses the Phantom Thieves but changes the gameplay emphasis to tactical, grid-based combat. ATLUS and Steam describe a new story for the group, and the game released on November 16, 2023. Choose it when tactical positioning, cover, movement and strategy-game turns sound more attractive than the standard dungeon-and-turn-based-RPG structure.
Tactica is therefore a more specific recommendation than Royal. It can follow your interest in the Phantom Thieves, but it is also a reasonable pick for a strategy fan who wants that cast without expecting the same combat format as the mainline RPG.
A decision guide based on your preferred story
- Want the broad modern Persona formula? Start with Persona 5 Royal. It combines Tokyo, social bonds, dungeons, party customization and turn-based battles.
- Want a rural mystery? Start with Persona 4 Golden. Its Inaba setting, serial-murder hook and coming-of-age framing are the deciding features.
- Want Persona 3 specifically? Choose between Persona 3 Reload and Persona 3 Portable by reading their current Steam descriptions. Both are available, and the evidence here does not justify a universal edition ranking.
- Want tactical, grid-based battles? Choose Persona 5 Tactica. Its combat format is the main reason to select it over a standard Persona RPG.
- Want another Phantom Thieves adventure? Consider Persona 5 Strikers after you know you enjoy the Persona 5 cast. The available descriptions do not impose one required order for Strikers and Tactica.
Difficulty and accessibility for story-focused players
ATLUS’s official Persona 5 Royal website states: “The story content will not be affected by the level you choose, so we recommend SAFE or EASY mode for those who just want to enjoy the story.” That makes Royal a useful choice if you want to concentrate on its characters and narrative without treating combat difficulty as the main challenge.

Steam purchase and setup considerations
Check the current regional listing
Steam prices, regional availability, discounts, bundles and review totals change. Use each game’s current Steam listing for the price and edition available in your region. The release dates and premise descriptions above identify the games; they are not permanent pricing claims.
Consider a controller for Persona 4 Golden
The Persona 4 Golden Steam listing specifically says the game is best experienced with a controller. A standard PC game controller is therefore a sensible optional accessory, especially if you prefer analog movement or playing from a sofa. No particular controller model is established as necessary by the listing.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Do not assume cross-game continuity
These recommendations are based on each game’s premise and listed features, not on an official requirement to complete the catalog in release order. Starting with Royal, Golden or a Persona 3 edition is a valid entry point; Strikers and Tactica are presented as follow-up possibilities because they use the Phantom Thieves, not because the available descriptions establish one universal sequence.
Bottom line: the right first Persona game depends on your hook
For an undecided Steam newcomer, buy Persona 5 Royal first: it offers the clearest all-round sample of relationships, Tokyo exploration, dungeon crawling, party customization and turn-based combat. Switch to Persona 4 Golden if the rural Inaba murder mystery is the story you would rather investigate. Pick Persona 3 Reload or Persona 3 Portable when Persona 3 itself is the attraction, checking the current listings to choose between those editions. Reserve Persona 5 Tactica for a tactical-RPG preference and treat Persona 5 Strikers as an optional additional Phantom Thieves adventure.
