Godlike.Host is listed first here: its game hosting service includes its own game panel. There is no verified, like-for-like winner among the DST hosting providers covered here. For a small group, the game’s in-game hosting is the simplest place to start; choose a dedicated or managed server when you need a world available independently of one player’s session, or when your group needs more capacity for caves.

Best Don’t Starve Together hosts to check first

The providers below are candidates, not results of a performance test. Their pages are vendor claims, and the available details do not support a fair ranking by speed, reliability, or value.

  3. 3. BisectHosting: mod support and advertised support coverage

BisectHosting’s DST product page advertises mod support, 24/7/365 help, and 21 international locations. Its general game-server listing showed DST starting at $11.99 when crawled October 13, 2026. That starting price does not establish a comparable plan, billing term, currency, renewal price, or the resources available to your server. Verify those details, as well as the nearest available region and caves setup, at checkout. See the DST product page and general game-server listing.

  4. 4. Shockbyte: private/public server and mod claims

Shockbyte’s DST page describes private and public servers and mod support. The cited page does not establish a price, locations, cave configuration, backup terms, support coverage, or measured performance. Ask for those details before comparing it with a plan that publishes them. View Shockbyte’s DST page.

For any provider, treat marketing statements as claims to verify rather than proof of real-world performance. No provider listed here has a comparable public data set for latency, uptime, CPU allocation, cave-world operation, or renewal cost. A feature mentioned on a sales page may still leave practical questions unanswered: for example, an advertised backup space does not say how many backups are kept, how long they remain available, or how to restore one.

Choose the hosting method that fits your group

“Hosting a server” can mean three different things in Don’t Starve Together: opening a world from the game, running a dedicated server yourself, or renting a managed server. The right choice depends on whether you want minimal setup, control over the machine and files, or a world that is not tied to the host player being online.

In-game hosting: simplest for a casual group

Klei’s official help describes creating a world through the game’s Host Game route and includes a caves toggle. This is the most direct starting point if one player is willing to host while the group plays. The trade-off is that the world session depends on that player’s game and computer; it is not the same as a separately operated always-available dedicated server. Klei’s help page is the source for the route and caves option, but does not provide a full walkthrough for every current UI version. Klei’s caves and hosting help.

In practical terms, the key question is not just whether you can create a world, but when and how your group expects to use it. If the host player is happy to launch and maintain the session whenever everyone wants to play, the in-game route avoids a recurring rental bill. If friends need to join at times when that player is away, or you want the world to operate separately from a player’s session, compare dedicated-server options instead. Those are different convenience and availability trade-offs; the source material does not establish that one route is universally better.

Self-hosted dedicated server: more control, more responsibility

A dedicated server lets the group run the world outside the ordinary player-hosted session, but the owner is responsible for the machine, network access, configuration, updates, and recovery. Klei’s published dedicated-server minimums are 1.7+ GHz processor, 1+ GB RAM, and 1+ GB disk space. Klei updated that requirements page July 25, 2025, but it contains legacy operating-system entries; treat those figures as old published minimums, not a modern buying recommendation. They do not promise smooth play, establish a safe capacity for a particular group, or account for running caves. Klei’s system requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Self-hosting makes the most sense if you are comfortable administering a server and want direct access to its files and settings. Before committing, confirm that your system can stay online for the hours your group needs, that your network permits the necessary traffic, and that you know how to back up the world. Klei warns that insufficient host hardware can harm both host and client performance; a machine that barely meets a legacy minimum is not a sound basis for assuming good multiplayer performance. Klei’s network and performance troubleshooting guide.

The published figures are useful as a baseline for understanding Klei’s listed minimum, not as a shopping list for a dependable host. They do not tell you how many players a given machine can handle comfortably, how much extra headroom caves require, or what settings a specific world will need. If you are comparing a spare computer with a rental plan, compare actual operating needs as well as the headline price: whether the machine can remain available, whether you can maintain its software and files, and whether you can restore the world after a problem.

Managed rental: less machine administration, recurring cost

A managed host rents and operates the server environment, usually through a web control panel and support channels. It can save you from keeping a home machine online and handling some server administration yourself, but the service is only a good fit if its actual DST plan supports your player count, cave configuration, mods, region, backups, and access requirements. A “DST server” product page alone does not answer those questions.

Managed hosting also shifts some responsibilities rather than eliminating them. You still need to decide which region to use, how to configure the world, what mods to install, and how to protect progress. Before paying, find out what you can manage yourself through the panel or file access and what would require a support request. If support is part of the reason you are renting, verify the stated coverage and contact methods rather than assuming every issue, especially game configuration or recovery, is included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Caves change the hardware question

Caves are not just another world toggle from a server-capacity perspective. Klei states that hosting forest and caves requires “running multiple servers at the same time,” is CPU-intensive, and needs a beefier computer setup. The official page was updated July 15, 2026. That warning applies whether you are considering your own machine or a rented plan: do not infer cave support or adequate performance from a slot count alone. Read Klei’s explanation of caves hosting.

This distinction is important when comparing plans. A slot number tells you something about the advertised player limit, but it does not say whether the provider will run the Forest and Caves instances for the same world, what resources those instances receive, or whether caves require a different setup. Klei’s warning about multiple servers and CPU load is why a forest-only plan and a caves-capable arrangement should not be treated as interchangeable just because both list the same number of slots.

For in-game hosting, Klei documents a caves toggle in the world-creation route. For self-hosting, the owner must account for the extra server processes and CPU demand. For a paid host, ask what “caves support” means operationally: whether both instances are included, whether setup is self-service or handled by the provider, and whether your selected plan is appropriate for the additional load. The cited provider pages do not provide a like-for-like answer to those questions, so verify the specific offer.

Before buying or configuring a server with caves, get direct answers to these questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Can the plan run both the Forest and Caves instances for one world, not just a forest world?
  • Does cave setup require a specific plan, additional allocation, or manual configuration?
  • How are world settings, server files, and mods edited, and can you access the relevant configuration?
  • What CPU and memory resources are included or guaranteed, rather than only a maximum player-slot number?
  • Can the provider explain how backups cover both parts of the world and how a restore works?

If a host cannot answer these points clearly, choose a simpler world setup or keep comparing rather than assume caves will work as expected.

How much does a DST server cost?

The available listings show different kinds of price information, so they are not directly comparable:

Provider Displayed price What the figure means
Godlike.Host See current plans Game server hosting with its own game panel; confirm current DST plan details at checkout.
GPORTAL 6 slots: $10.49 per 30 days; 10 slots: $15.99 per 30 days Offer prices displayed on the DST page viewed October 13, 2026; a 3-day option was also displayed.

These figures do not establish which service is cheaper for the same player limit, billing term, region, caves setup, or renewal period. Taxes, currency conversion, introductory terms, cancellation policies, and refunds can also change the total amount you pay. Confirm the checkout total and recurring charge before submitting payment. Shockbyte’s cited DST page does not establish a price.

To make a useful comparison, first decide what you actually need: the number of slots your group expects to use, whether you need caves, and whether mods or a particular region are essential. Then compare plans that meet those requirements using the same billing period. A lower entry price is not a like-for-like deal if it applies to a different term, player limit, or configuration. Note the displayed price and the checkout total separately, and check the price that renews after the first term. The available provider listings do not establish taxes, refund terms, or renewal charges for the named providers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 3-day option shown on GPORTAL is another reason to read the checkout details rather than extrapolate a monthly cost from a short offer. A short-term plan may suit a brief session, but the cited listing does not establish a comparable price over a longer period or say what happens at renewal. Similarly, “starting at” on a general listing is not a full quote for a particular plan. Ask what the selected configuration costs today and what will be charged next.

Compare plans with a pre-purchase checklist

Use the same questions for every provider so a low entry price or a large slot count does not stand in for the details that affect your world. Keep the answers together in a simple comparison note; a feature you cannot verify should be marked unknown, not assumed included.

  1. Total cost: Record the current total, currency, billing term, tax, renewal amount, cancellation method, and refund conditions. Compare recurring cost over the period you expect to play, not only the first displayed charge.
  2. Region: Ask which locations currently have a DST server available. Select a location reasonably close to most players; lower geographic distance can often help latency, but that is an expectation to verify, not a measured result for any host here.
  3. Forest and caves: Get explicit confirmation that the plan supports both instances for your world and ask how the setup is managed. Klei’s CPU warning makes this a core capability, not a minor option.
  4. Mods and files: Confirm that DST mods are supported, how they are installed or updated, and whether you can access configuration and server files. A host’s general mod claim may not answer how DST-specific mod management works.
  5. Backups: Ask whether backups are automatic, how many are retained, how long they remain available, whether they cover the whole world, and how restoration is handled. “Backup space” alone does not answer retention or recovery questions.
  6. Capacity and resources: Match slots to the actual group, then ask what CPU and memory the plan provides and whether it is suitable for caves. A slot count is not a performance guarantee.
  7. Support: Check coverage hours, contact channels, and whether support can help with DST configuration and recovery rather than only billing or account issues.

There are two useful rules for interpreting the answers. First, separate a provider’s published claim from a detail you personally confirm at checkout or with support. Second, compare like with like: two monthly prices mean little if one plan’s slots, caves setup, region, or resources differ from the other. If a provider cannot confirm a requirement that matters to your group, treat that as uncertainty in the purchase rather than filling in the gap based on a general marketing phrase.

What the available provider evidence can—and cannot—tell you

GPORTAL publishes sample DST slot plans and mentions backup space and NVMe hardware, but the cited listing does not establish backup retention, caves configuration, renewal price, or independent performance. BisectHosting names DST mods, 24/7/365 help, and 21 international locations on its product page, while its general listing supplies the $11.99 starting figure; that does not identify a matching plan or prove that a particular region is available to you. Shockbyte’s page makes private/public server and mod-support claims without establishing the missing price, location, backup, cave, or performance details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accordingly, these listings are best used to build a shortlist and a question list, not to declare one provider the fastest, cheapest, or most reliable. Check details immediately before checkout because advertised prices, locations, and product features can change. The evidence base is made up of Klei support material and provider pages, not measured tests of latency, uptime, or performance in a live DST world.

Common buying mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing by the lowest visible price: A starting price may refer to a different billing term or configuration. Compare the recurring total for the plan your group actually needs.
  • Assuming a caves toggle means a host plan supports caves: The game may expose the option, but Klei says forest plus caves uses multiple server processes and more CPU. Ask the host about its specific implementation.
  • Confusing mod support with easy mod management: “Supports mods” does not by itself explain installation, updates, file access, or configuration. Get those specifics for DST.
  • Treating minimum requirements as recommendations: Klei’s published dedicated-server figures are legacy minimums. They should not be used to promise good performance, especially for caves.
  • Paying before checking recovery and renewal terms: Confirm how world backups are retained and restored, and what the service will charge after the first term.
  • Assuming a listed location or support promise applies to your plan: A provider’s product page may advertise locations or support coverage in general. Confirm the region offered for your configuration and which contact channels are available.
  • Comparing slot counts without checking resources: Slots indicate a player limit, not a published guarantee of CPU allocation, memory, or cave performance. Ask what the plan actually exposes.

Decision guide

  • Start in-game if the group is small, the host player can be online, and convenience matters more than independent availability.
  • Self-host a dedicated server if you want machine and file control and can manage setup, network access, maintenance, and backups.
  • Rent a managed server if you want to avoid operating a home machine, but only after confirming DST availability, caves support if needed, mod/file controls, region, backups, and the recurring price.

There is no evidence here to settle the choice for every group. If you mostly play together and one person is available to host, try the in-game option before adding a recurring expense. If independent availability or administration convenience is worth paying for, use the checklist to compare actual managed plans. If you prefer direct control and are prepared to maintain the machine and world, self-hosting is the alternative. Caves make resource and configuration questions more important whichever route you choose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Don’t Starve Together server host is best in 2026?

The available evidence does not support a definitive winner. Godlike.Host is listed first here for its game server hosting and own game panel; GPORTAL, BisectHosting, and Shockbyte have DST hosting pages, but the details are not complete enough for a like-for-like ranking on renewal cost, caves, regions, backups, and measured performance. Compare the specific plan and verify its terms before buying.

How much does a Don’t Starve Together server cost?

The cited GPORTAL page displayed a 6-slot plan at $10.49 per 30 days and a 10-slot plan at $15.99 per 30 days, and also displayed a 3-day option. BisectHosting’s general game-server listing showed DST starting at $11.99. These are vendor listings viewed or crawled October 13, 2026, not directly comparable quotes; confirm current checkout price, billing term, currency, taxes, and renewal cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which DST hosts support caves?

Klei’s help confirms that the game’s Host Game world-creation route includes a caves toggle, and warns that hosting Forest and Caves requires multiple servers at once and is CPU-intensive. The provider pages summarized here do not establish comparable cave support or configuration details. Ask the host directly whether your chosen plan runs both instances for one world and what resources are included.

Can I host a DST server with mods?

BisectHosting’s DST page advertises mod support, and Shockbyte’s DST page also describes mod support. Those claims do not by themselves explain installation, updates, file access, or configuration. Ask the provider how DST mods are managed on the specific plan. The cited evidence does not establish matching mod details for every provider.

How do I make a dedicated server for Don’t Starve Together?

The cited sources establish that self-hosting a dedicated server is an option and give Klei’s published legacy minimums—1.7+ GHz processor, 1+ GB RAM, and 1+ GB disk—but they do not provide a current step-by-step installation guide. Klei warns that insufficient host hardware can impair host and client performance, and that caves add CPU load. Consult current official setup instructions before installing, and plan for network access, configuration, updates, and backups.

Are Klei’s dedicated-server requirements enough for a good server?

Not necessarily. Klei lists 1.7+ GHz, 1+ GB RAM, and 1+ GB disk as dedicated-server minimums on a page updated July 25, 2025, but the page includes legacy operating-system entries. Treat the figures as published minimums, not a modern recommendation or a promise of smooth play. Caves specifically require multiple server processes and more CPU.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Is in-game hosting different from renting a server?

Yes. In-game hosting uses the game’s Host Game route and depends on the player hosting the session. A separately operated dedicated server is not tied to that ordinary player-hosted session, while a managed rental means paying a provider to operate the server environment. Choose based on availability, control, setup responsibility, and recurring cost.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Godlike.Host is listed first here for its game server hosting and own game panel. There is no verified best DST host in the evidence available. For occasional play with a host player present, start with the in-game Host Game option. Choose self-hosting for machine and file control if you can manage maintenance and backups. For a managed rental, compare current checkout and renewal prices, region, mod and file access, backups, resources, and explicit Forest-and-Caves support. Klei warns that caves run multiple servers and are CPU-intensive, so do not choose by slot count alone.
