Persona 3 Portable builds its story around the Dark Hour, a hidden interval when the city falls still, people become coffins, and Shadows emerge. After a Shadow attack, the protagonist awakens a Persona. ATLUS’s official series portal presents this as an ominous premise, and its focus gives the story a clear emotional center.

Its strength is the way the central threat points toward questions of mortality and what gives life meaning. That thematic direction gives the conflict weight beyond the mystery of the Dark Hour itself. It takes the top spot for the cohesion of its existential stakes and character-focused impact, rather than for having the most elaborate mystery or the broadest social scope.
Choose it if you want a story whose tension is rooted in confronting mortality. If your priority is solving a layered case or following a campaign of public rebellion, the other entries may suit you better.

2. Persona 4 Golden — the strongest investigation
In Persona 4 Golden, the protagonist moves to rural Inaba as a rumor about seeing one’s soulmate on a rainy night circulates alongside mysterious murders. The protagonist and their teammates investigate the truth and enter another world, according to ATLUS’s series portal.
That small-town setup gives the game a natural question to follow: what is happening in Inaba, and how are the strange events connected? Its investigative structure makes the central mystery the clearest hook among these three games. It ranks below Persona 3 Portable here because the comparison gives more weight to an emotionally unified, mortality-facing arc than to the appeal of an unfolding case.

Pick Persona 4 Golden if you want the story to keep drawing you forward through clues, rumors, and an unusual setting. Players who value existential themes over investigation may prefer the first-place entry.
3. Persona 5 Royal — the sharpest social premise
Persona 5 Royal follows a student transferred to a Tokyo high school who has a foreboding dream and takes on a rehabilitation goal. As a Phantom Thief, the protagonist works to save people from distorted desires. ATLUS’s official game page frames the story around the contrast between ordinary school days and nighttime Phantom Thief activity.

This dual life gives the game a strong foundation for stories about social pressure, hidden motives, and rebellion. ATLUS’s separate Persona 5 page describes the characters as confronting the masks people wear to protect their vulnerabilities. That framing applies to Persona 5; it should not be treated as a complete critical interpretation of every entry in the series.
Persona 5 Royal places third in this story-only ranking because its broad social and rebellious premise is less tightly centered on one emotional or investigative through-line than the other two entries under the criteria used here. It may still be the best fit if you want a story about challenging distorted power while balancing school life and a secret identity.

What is the best Persona game to start with?

This ranking does not make one of them a universal starting point; the best fit depends on which kind of story you want to spend time with.
ATLUS’s series portal displays Persona 5 Royal as released October 21, 2022, and Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable as released January 19, 2023. For players focused on Persona 5 Royal’s story, ATLUS says, “The story content will not be affected by the level you choose, so we recommend SAFE or EASY mode for those who just want to enjoy the story.” That guidance is specific to Persona 5 Royal.
