Recommended Free Tools
To identify a ghost in Phasmophobia, first find the room with the strongest activity, then use the matching evidence tools and record confirmed clues in your journal. A cold room, one ghost-orb sighting, or an unusual event can point you in a direction, but none is enough on its own to establish an identity.
This beginner’s workflow covers what to bring, how to search, what each tool can tell you, and how to reduce risk while investigating. Exact mechanics can change between game updates; use the current in-game journal and settings as your reference when they differ from older guides.

What to bring on your first investigation
For a simple first pass, take an EMF Reader, a thermometer, and a video camera if they are available in your loadout. Bring a light if you need one to see safely. These tools help you look for activity, compare rooms, and check for ghost orbs. There is no universally best loadout: your choices depend on evidence coverage, placement or range, equipment tier, weather, and the contract’s difficulty.

Phasmophobia supplies a set of equipment by default, while other items can be purchased with in-game money and added to your loadout. Equipment tiers unlock at different player levels and can have different properties. These are in-game tools, not real-world gear recommendations. The official PlayStation game page describes the game as online co-op for up to four players and highlights evidence gathering with items such as EMF Readers, Spirit Boxes, thermometers, and night-vision cameras. It also lists a practice mode.

How to find the ghost room
Search for activity, then compare temperatures
Move through the location deliberately. Check rooms for interactions and other activity, and compare their temperatures rather than relying on a single reading. The likely ghost room is often colder than nearby rooms, but that makes cold a location clue—not automatic confirmation of Freezing Temperatures evidence. For a room to count as freezing evidence, use the game’s evidence rules and readings, not cold breath alone.
Check the breaker and weather
If the breaker is off, turning it on early can let the property return toward its normal temperature and make room-to-room comparisons more useful. Snow can lower temperatures throughout the location, so a cold reading or visible breath in snowy weather may not isolate the ghost’s room.

Separate locating the room from identifying the ghost
Finding the likely room tells you where to investigate; it does not tell you which ghost you have. Once you have a promising location, place evidence equipment there and give tools time to register clues. The official game overview describes evidence gathering as the core investigative task, but detailed mechanics are better checked against the current game because community-maintained reference pages can become outdated.
What each evidence tool does
| Tool | What it tests or helps you do | Beginner use |
|---|---|---|
| EMF Reader | Tests for EMF Level 5 and helps gauge activity. | Check around recent interactions. Treat a reading as evidence only when it meets the game’s criteria. |
| Thermometer | Measures temperature; Freezing Temperatures can be evidence. | Compare rooms, and account for the breaker and weather. A relatively cold room alone is not proof of freezing evidence. |
| Video Camera | Can reveal ghost orbs when viewed with night vision. | Position it to scan useful parts of the likely room. A Mimic can show orbs even though orbs are not its official evidence, so check the rest of the evidence combination. |
| D.O.T.S. Projector | Tests for D.O.T.S. evidence. | Place it so its coverage can intersect the ghost’s movement. Coverage and other properties differ by tier. |
| Spirit Box | Lets you ask questions and test for a response. | Follow the game’s response requirements. If speech recognition is a barrier, try the text-based UI setting. |
| UV Light | Tests surfaces for UV evidence, including fingerprints or footprints. | Check surfaces after interactions; evidence may be easiest to find soon after activity. |
| Ghost Writing Book | Tests for Ghost Writing evidence. | Set it down in the likely room early and allow time for a result. |
Equipment tiers have different properties, so a tool’s range, coverage, or behavior may depend on the tier you have unlocked. For item-specific mechanics, consult the current in-game descriptions rather than assuming every tier works identically.

How to narrow down the ghost type
- Record only confirmed evidence. Use the journal to mark clues that meet the game’s criteria; leave uncertain observations unconfirmed.
- Compare the remaining candidates. Let the journal’s evidence combinations narrow the list instead of guessing from one event.
- Account for the contract difficulty. Evidence rules can vary by difficulty. The community evidence reference describes Nightmare contracts as limiting each ghost to two evidence types, with one hidden; treat that specific rule as version-sensitive and check your current game before relying on it.
- Use behavior to break a tie. Once evidence has narrowed the possibilities, a distinctive ability or trait may help distinguish candidates. Behaviors are supporting clues, not substitutes for a reliable evidence record.
Examples of supporting behavior clues
- A Revenant’s movement behavior can help distinguish it when observed under suitable conditions.
- An Obake can leave a distinctive six-fingered handprint.
- An Oni cannot produce a mist-form ghost event.
These are specialist clues, and exact mechanics may change. Beginners should prioritize evidence first, then use behavior to resolve a short candidate list.
Stay safer while collecting evidence
Switch off electronics when hiding
Active electronics can make you easier for a ghost to detect during a hunt. Turn them off before hiding rather than leaving equipment running in your hands. Some ghosts, including the Raiju, have a specific interaction with active electronics, which makes careful equipment handling especially useful.

Use Incense as a timed tool, not a guarantee
Incense can create time to escape, but its effect depends on tier and timing. Learn how it works in the current game and practice using it; carrying it does not make a risky position automatically safe.

Common beginner mistakes
- Calling the ghost from one clue: An orb sighting, cold breath, or unusual behavior is not a guaranteed identity. Check the evidence combination and relevant caveats, especially the Mimic’s orbs.
- Confusing a cold room with freezing evidence: Compare temperatures, account for weather and breaker state, and confirm the evidence by the game’s criteria.
- Leaving evidence tools too late: Place items such as the Writing Book in the likely room early, since some results may take time.
- Assuming all difficulties provide the same evidence: Evidence availability can be restricted or hidden depending on the contract.
- Struggling with voice recognition without changing settings: A text-based UI option can provide an alternative for Spirit Box questions and cursed-object interaction.
Which mechanics may change
The detailed item, evidence, and behavior references for Phasmophobia are community-maintained and can be version-sensitive. The GameSpot beginner and equipment guides dated July 2 and July 23, 2026, respectively, cover practical starter advice; the official PlayStation page confirms the game’s high-level premise and practice mode but is not a complete mechanics reference. Check the live game’s journal, item descriptions, and settings whenever a threshold or behavior matters to your decision.
