There is no verified, one-size-fits-all Phasmophobia preset for clearer audio and smoother performance. The most defensible approach is to keep the cues you rely on, adjust graphics options one at a time, and check each change on your own system. Official notes describe several relevant settings, but do not publish a current recommended PC configuration or setting-by-setting FPS benchmarks.
Which graphics settings should you adjust first?
Start with the visual effects that have a documented performance trade-off, then assess whether the game feels smoother without losing too much visibility.

Screen Space Global Illumination (SSGI)
Kinetic Games introduced SSGI in the January 9, 2024 v0.9.4.0 update. The developer described it as simulated bounced lighting that makes lighting and shadows look less dark, and warned that it may affect performance. The update provided three quality levels, but did not give measured FPS differences between them. Read the v0.9.4.0 patch notes.

If performance is a problem, try lowering SSGI quality or turning it off if that control is available in your version, then compare the result in the same location and lighting conditions. This is a general troubleshooting method, not a developer-recommended preset or a tested performance result.

Eye Adaption
The same update added Eye Adaption, which Kinetic Games described as simulating how eyes adjust when moving between bright and dark areas. It affects how lighting transitions appear; the notes do not identify it as a performance fix or provide recommended values. If brightness changes make it harder for you to follow a scene, compare your experience with the option enabled and disabled, if your version exposes that choice.
Brightness and dark-room contrast
In that update, the brightness slider’s documented range changed to 0%-250% as ambient light increased. That range is not a recommendation to set brightness high. Kinetic Games also noted that larger rooms or rooms with darker materials may intentionally appear darker. Choose a comfortable level that lets you see useful detail while retaining enough contrast to read the scene; this is a practical suggestion, not a tested numeric setting. How can you make Phasmophobia audio clearer?
Audio changes can affect both comfort and the clues you hear. Avoid raising every volume indiscriminately: the official material reviewed does not specify a universal mix or recommended volume numbers.
Use vertical audio cues
Kinetic Games has documented that sounds one floor above the player are bass-boosted and muffled, while sounds one floor below are more muffled and quiet. Sounds two floors away receive stronger effects and volume reduction. These differences are part of how the game presents sound from other levels, so muffling does not necessarily mean an audio fault. See the developer’s audio and optimization notes.

PlayStation: mono and 3D audio
Sony’s PlayStation product page lists individual volume controls, mono audio, and 3D audio. It describes mono as sending the same audio to each speaker, while 3D audio lets sounds be heard from around the player. These are different output approaches: choose the one that suits your listening setup and accessibility needs. The PlayStation listing does not establish that the same controls or labels exist on PC. Check your selected audio devices
If you cannot hear expected cues or voice chat is not working, check that the game and your platform are using the intended input and output devices, then consult current support instructions for your platform. Kinetic Games’ older update notes mention virtual audio devices working with voice chat and a Steam Deck voice-recognition issue at that time; that historical note should not be taken as evidence of a current Steam Deck problem. How should you tune settings for smoother performance?
Use a repeatable comparison rather than chasing a universal preset. Change one graphics option at a time, revisit the same scene, and judge both smoothness and whether you can still see and hear what matters to you. If the change does not help, restore it before testing another option.

- Record your starting point. Note the current graphics and audio options you plan to change so you can restore them.
- Choose one visual effect. SSGI is a reasonable first trial because the developer specifically warns it may affect performance.
- Compare under similar conditions. Revisit the same location and lighting conditions; pay attention to perceived smoothness and useful visibility rather than assuming a particular FPS gain.
- Keep or revert the change. Retain it only if the result works better for your setup, then test another option separately if needed.
- Recheck after updates. Game updates can change behavior. Consult current Phasmophobia patch notes before relying on older settings advice.
Kinetic Games’ historical optimization notes describe work involving cameras, shadows, weather, UI, physics, audio, reflections, and texture or shader memory. Do PC and console settings match?
Not necessarily. The documented PlayStation audio options are platform-specific evidence, not proof of identical PC controls. Kinetic Games’ June 2026 roadmap said a planned October move to Unity 6 would bring stability updates and a new lighting system, and listed console Eye Adaptation as planned. A roadmap is not confirmation that the update shipped or that those features are now available. Check current release notes for your platform before relying on planned changes.
