| Crash before the main menu | Verify files, diagnose the GPU driver, rebuild UnityPlayer.dll, and isolate overlays or background programs. |
| Crash while loading a contract, map, or event | Check for a game update or hotfix first. Game-side regressions can require a patch rather than a Windows change. |
| Crash only in VR | Check the VR headset, OpenXR path, Oculus software where applicable, drivers, and connected controllers. |
| Crash after a Windows or GPU-driver update | Test the driver path, recent Windows changes, and newly installed background utilities. |
| Crash after changing graphics settings | Lower the settings, try another display mode, and check Windows’ per-app graphics options. |
Phasmophobia remains in Early Access on Steam, and Kinetic Games continues to release updates and hotfixes. If a crash begins immediately after a game update—especially during a particular event or map—look for an official patch before repeatedly changing your PC configuration.
1. Verify Phasmophobia’s files in Steam
This is the safest first step. A damaged, incomplete, or unexpectedly changed game file can prevent Phasmophobia from launching or cause a crash during loading.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Phasmophobia and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files. On some Steam versions, this section may still be labeled Local Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then restart Steam and launch the game again.
Steam may report that one or more files failed to verify even after the process completes. That does not necessarily mean verification failed: local configuration files can be intentionally excluded from replacement. The important result is whether Steam reacquires or replaces files and whether the crash changes afterward.
If the game still crashes, continue to the GPU-driver step rather than repeatedly verifying the same installation.
2. Update, clean-install, or roll back your graphics driver
Kinetic Games lists current NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel graphics drivers among its first-line remedies. A driver problem can appear as a crash at startup, a freeze during a transition, or a failure after changing graphics options.
Install the latest driver for your actual GPU from its manufacturer, then restart Windows before testing Phasmophobia. If your graphics software offers a clean-install option, it can help remove damaged or conflicting driver components. This is particularly worth considering when a normal update did not change the problem.

If the crashes began after a driver update
A rollback is a conditional diagnostic test, not a universal fix. If Phasmophobia worked until a specific driver update, temporarily testing the previous known-working driver can tell you whether the timing is significant. Use the graphics manufacturer’s supported installation and rollback options where available.

One community report associated a June 2026 startup crash on an RTX 5060 Ti with a particular NVIDIA driver and said that an older driver resolved that user’s issue. That is an anecdote, not an official Phasmophobia fix or proof that the same driver is responsible for every player’s crash.
Do not install a driver merely because a third-party “driver updater” recommends it. Identify your GPU first and use the manufacturer’s official driver package.
3. Rebuild the UnityPlayer.dll installation
Phasmophobia uses the Unity game engine. If the crash appears to involve the Unity startup process, Kinetic Games recommends removing the game’s UnityPlayer.dll and then verifying the files so Steam downloads a clean copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Close Phasmophobia and Steam’s game process if it is still running.
- In Steam, open the game’s properties and browse to its installed files.
- Find
UnityPlayer.dllin the main Phasmophobia installation folder. - Delete that file only. Do not delete save data or unrelated folders.
- Return to Steam and run Verify integrity of game files again.
- Allow Steam to reacquire the missing DLL, then restart Windows and test the game.
This is more targeted than uninstalling the entire game. Do not download a replacement UnityPlayer.dll from a DLL website; the safe replacement source is Steam’s verified game installation.
4. Run Windows System File Checker
If Windows itself has damaged or inconsistent system files, that can interfere with games, drivers, or supporting services. Kinetic Games recommends using Microsoft’s System File Checker.
- Open the Start menu and search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
sfc /scannow
Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent. Depending on the result, Windows may report that it found no integrity violations, found and repaired corrupted files, or found problems it could not repair. Restart the PC after the scan and try the game again.
sfc /scannow checks Windows system-file integrity; it does not repair a corrupt Phasmophobia installation. That is why it belongs after Steam verification rather than instead of it.

5. Move the game to the C: drive as a storage and permissions test
Kinetic Games lists moving Phasmophobia to the C: drive as another possible remedy. This does not mean that the game requires C:, or that every secondary drive is defective. Treat it as a compatibility test when the game is installed on an external drive, a secondary disk, a network-like location, or a drive with unusual permissions or sleep behavior.
In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Storage to manage your game libraries. Add or select a library on the C: drive, choose Phasmophobia, and use Steam’s move option. The exact button label can vary with Steam’s current interface.
Make sure the destination has enough free space and is an internal drive if possible. If moving the game fixes the crash, the result points toward the original drive, its permissions, its connection, or its file system—not necessarily toward a faulty game build.
6. Check antivirus and firewall interference
Security software can sometimes block a game executable, Unity component, update process, or network activity. Kinetic Games recommends adding Phasmophobia as an antivirus or firewall exception and temporarily disabling or excluding security software as a diagnostic step.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the least disruptive test:
- Update your antivirus and Windows security definitions first.
- Add the legitimate Steam game executable and its installation folder to a targeted allowlist or exception, following your security software’s instructions.
- Launch the game and test the specific situation that normally crashes.
- If you temporarily disable protection, disconnect from untrusted networks, perform only the short test, and turn protection back on immediately.
- Remove any temporary broad exclusion that did not solve the problem.
Never leave antivirus protection disabled as a permanent “fix.” If an exception solves the problem, keep it narrow and verify that the files it covers belong to your Steam installation.
7. Disconnect controllers and VR hardware
USB controllers, VR headsets, tracking devices, and their software add another hardware and driver path. Kinetic Games lists unplugging controllers or VR hardware as a possible fix.
For ordinary desktop play, close the game, disconnect nonessential controllers and VR devices, and launch with only your normal keyboard and mouse connected. If the crash disappears, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the trigger. Update the device software and drivers before reconnecting everything.

For VR-only crashes
Check the headset connection, the active OpenXR runtime, the VR platform software, and the graphics driver. If Oculus software is installed, Kinetic Games advises keeping the Oculus application running in the background even when launching desktop mode. This applies to players using that Oculus-related setup; it is not a requirement for every PC player.
Do not treat a VR-only failure as proof that the base game is broken. The additional runtime, headset, USB connection, controller firmware, and GPU workload all create separate points of failure.
8. Update Windows, lower graphics settings, and close background apps
Complete the remaining low-risk configuration checks:
- Open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, and restart the PC.
- Lower graphics settings in Phasmophobia, especially if the crash occurs after entering a map or changing visual options.
- Try a different display mode, such as exclusive fullscreen instead of borderless windowed, or the reverse.
- Close unnecessary overlays and background applications, including recording tools, hardware monitors, RGB utilities, chat overlays, and other programs that hook into games.
Choose the high-performance GPU in Windows 11
On a hybrid-GPU laptop, Windows may assign the game to integrated graphics instead of the discrete GPU. Windows 11 lets you set a per-app graphics preference:
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Add Phasmophobia to the app list if it is not already shown.
- Open the game’s Options.
- Select High performance, then save the choice.
The same Windows graphics area may expose a setting for windowed-game optimizations. If the crash is tied to borderless or windowed mode, test the available optimization setting, restart the game, and compare results. These are Windows 11 graphics controls, not Phasmophobia-specific fixes, so their availability and effect depend on your PC, Windows version, and GPU.

Check whether your hardware is below the published baseline
Steam lists Phasmophobia for 64-bit Windows 10, with 8 GB of RAM and DirectX 11. Its listed minimum graphics hardware is an NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 390, while the recommended graphics hardware is an NVIDIA RTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 5700.
There is an important qualification: Steam says the minimum specifications are for VR, and that lower specifications may work for non-VR play. Therefore, the minimum VR GPU should not be treated as a guaranteed requirement for ordinary desktop mode—or as a guarantee that the game will be stable on every system that meets it.

If the PC fails the published requirements, or if the crash occurs only when the VR path is active, hardware may be part of the explanation. Check the GPU, RAM, storage, temperatures, and headset connection before buying anything. An upgrade is not the default answer to a crash, especially when the problem started immediately after a game or driver update.
What to do if none of the eight fixes works
Do not keep repeating system changes without recording what happened. At this point, the problem may be a game-side regression, a specific driver conflict, a hardware fault, or an issue unique to your VR or Windows configuration. Game updates and hotfixes matter here. Kinetic Games’ 2026 announcements document fixes for multiple crash types, including crashes while loading event maps and a crash affecting all platforms. If your symptoms match a newly introduced issue, waiting for the developer’s fix may be more effective—and safer—than making increasingly invasive changes to Windows.
Frequently Asked Questions
Start by verifying the game files in Steam and checking the GPU driver. If the crash continues, rebuild the game’s UnityPlayer.dll installation and isolate overlays or other background software.
Why does Phasmophobia keep crashing before the main menu?
It can be worth testing when the crashes began immediately after a driver update, but it is a conditional diagnostic step rather than a universal Phasmophobia fix. Use the manufacturer’s supported driver process.
Can rolling back my NVIDIA or AMD driver fix Phasmophobia crashes?
Kinetic Games specifically recommends deleting UnityPlayer.dll from the Phasmophobia installation folder and then verifying the game files so Steam downloads a clean copy. Do not download the DLL from a third-party website, and do not delete save data.
Should I delete UnityPlayer.dll?
Check the headset connection, OpenXR and VR software, drivers, and connected controllers. If Oculus software is installed, Kinetic Games advises leaving the Oculus application running in the background, including when launching desktop mode.
Why does Phasmophobia crash only in VR?
The Bottom Line
Start with Steam file verification, then update or diagnose the GPU driver. If that fails, rebuild UnityPlayer.dll, check Windows system files, test the installation on C:, isolate security software, disconnect VR or controller hardware, and finish with Windows, graphics, and background-app checks. A crash tied to a recent update or a specific event may require an official hotfix, so report persistent failures with precise timing and system details.
