The 60-second answer
photoshop.dll is the Photoshop Resource DLL, an application file supplied with Adobe Photoshop. It is not a Windows component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, driver, or .NET file.

- Existing subscribers must first complete current membership term before linking new subscription term
- With Photoshop, you can create and enhance photographs, illustrations, and 3D artwork
- Design websites and mobile apps
- Edit videos, simulate real-life paintings, and more
- Restart Windows.
- Open Creative Cloud and update the Creative Cloud desktop application and Photoshop.
- If Photoshop still fails, uninstall Photoshop from Creative Cloud.
- Restart Windows again.
- Reinstall Photoshop from Creative Cloud or the legitimate installer that originally supplied it.
Do not download photoshop.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. A replacement file can have the wrong version, architecture, publisher, or dependencies, and may introduce malware.
What is photoshop.dll?
photoshop.dll is an Adobe Photoshop application/resource DLL. Adobe system information identifies Photoshop.dll as part of Photoshop, and Adobe documentation lists it among Creative Cloud executable files stored on customer computers.
The file normally belongs in the installation directory or version-specific installation tree of the Photoshop executable that loads it. The exact path varies by Photoshop release, installation method, language, and whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
It should not normally be installed as a shared Windows file. Windows searches the application’s directory during normal DLL loading, before relying on broader system locations. That is why placing an Adobe file in a system folder is not a proper repair and can create version conflicts or unsafe DLL-loading behavior.
Some historical file records identify versions such as:
| Architecture | Example version | Reported size |
|---|---|---|
| 64-bit | 21.0.1.47 | 1.11 MB |
| 32-bit | 14.0.0.0 | 1.59 MB |
| 64-bit | 14.0.0.0 | 1.59 MB |
| 32-bit | 12.0.4.0 | 1.16 MB |
| 32-bit | 12.0.0.0 | 1.16 MB |
These are historical examples, not a universal specification. A newer or differently packaged Photoshop installation can contain a different version and size.
First identify the program requesting the file
Although the name points strongly to Photoshop, the message may be displayed by another application that bundles, loads, or references Photoshop components. A third-party plug-in, launcher, script, installer, or companion program may be the process that actually fails.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Look at the complete error dialog and note:
- The executable name, if shown
- The full path in the message
- The folder from which the program was started
- Whether the error appears when launching Photoshop, Creative Cloud, a plug-in, or another application
If the error names a different application, repair that application first. Reinstalling Photoshop will not repair an unrelated program that happens to reference a Photoshop component.
You can also check the failing process in Event Viewer:
- Press Windows+R.
- Type
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
- Open the event and note Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and the path information.
The event may not identify the missing file directly, but it can confirm which executable is failing.
Fix 1: Update and reinstall Photoshop from Creative Cloud
This is the primary repair for a genuine photoshop.dll error because the file belongs to Photoshop itself.
Update Photoshop
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop application.
- Select Apps.
- Select Updates or All Apps, depending on the Creative Cloud layout.
- Find Photoshop.
- Select Update if an update is available.
- Allow the update to complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch Photoshop again.
Also install any available Creative Cloud desktop application update. A damaged or outdated Creative Cloud client can interfere with application repair and installation.
If Photoshop opens after the update, the missing or damaged file was probably replaced by the installer. If the same error remains, continue with a clean reinstall.
Reinstall Photoshop
- Open Creative Cloud.
- Select Apps.
- Find Photoshop under All Apps or Installed.
- Select the three-dot More actions button beside Photoshop.
- Select Uninstall.
- Choose whether to retain or remove Photoshop preferences.
- Confirm the uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Creative Cloud again.
- Select Install beside Photoshop.
- Wait for the installation to finish.
- Start Photoshop from the Start menu.
Use the same legitimate Adobe account and installation channel associated with the existing copy. Do not copy photoshop.dll from an older Photoshop folder into the new installation.
A successful repair means Photoshop starts without the missing-file dialog. If the error changes to a different filename, record that filename rather than replacing files randomly. The new error may identify a separate dependency.
Fix 2: Repair Creative Cloud if its installer is damaged
If Creative Cloud will not open, the Photoshop uninstall or installation may not be available.
- Close Photoshop and all Adobe applications.
- Download or open Adobe’s official Creative Cloud desktop uninstaller.
- Run the uninstaller.
- Select Repair when that option is offered.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Creative Cloud and try to update, uninstall, or reinstall Photoshop.
Repair Creative Cloud before choosing a complete removal. If repair fails, use the official Adobe uninstaller to remove Creative Cloud, restart, reinstall Creative Cloud from Adobe, and then install Photoshop again.
If the installer itself fails to launch, right-click the installer and select Run as administrator. Temporarily disconnecting a restrictive corporate network or security policy may also be necessary, but do not disable antivirus protection permanently. On a managed computer, ask the administrator to approve the Adobe installer.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Security software can quarantine an application DLL after an update, a false detection, or a change in the file’s behavior. Do not assume quarantine is the cause until the security history confirms it.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a recent event involving Photoshop or
photoshop.dll. - Open the event and review the detected path and action.
If the file was quarantined, compare its path with the Photoshop installation folder. A file in an unexpected temporary folder is not automatically safe merely because its name is correct.

- Enhance your pics with eGects, text, graphics, and animation, and amp up the action in your videos with eGects, transitions, expressive text, motion titles, music, animations, and color grading presets.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of these conditions are satisfied:
- Photoshop came from a legitimate Adobe installer.
- The file path belongs to that Photoshop installation.
- The security product identifies the file as a probable false positive.
- The file’s publisher and digital signature can be verified.
- You have already updated or repaired Photoshop if possible.
If any condition is uncertain, leave the file quarantined and reinstall Photoshop from Adobe instead. Submit the detection to Adobe or the security vendor for review when appropriate.
Fix 4: Verify the path, publisher, signature, and architecture
A file with the correct name is not necessarily the correct file.
If a copy of photoshop.dll remains on disk:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Check the General tab for its location.
- Open Details and review the description, file version, and product name.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Select the listed signature.
- Select Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
- Open View Certificate and review the publisher information.
The expected publisher is Adobe. A missing or invalid signature does not by itself prove malware, particularly for an old file, but it means the file should not be trusted as a repair source.
Check that the DLL belongs to the same Photoshop installation and architecture as the executable. A 32-bit executable requires compatible 32-bit application files, while a 64-bit executable requires compatible 64-bit files. Mixing files from different Photoshop releases or architectures can cause “not designed to run on Windows,” 0xc000007b, or other loader errors.
The correct fix for mixed files is to uninstall the damaged installation and reinstall the appropriate Photoshop edition. Do not try to solve an architecture mismatch by renaming files or moving them between folders.
Fix 5: Distinguish Photoshop errors from Visual C++ errors
Not every DLL error shown while launching Photoshop is a Photoshop DLL error.
Adobe’s missing-DLL guidance concerns Microsoft runtime files such as:
msvcp110.dllmsvcr110.dllvcruntime140_1.dll
Those files are different from photoshop.dll.
If the message names one of those Microsoft runtime files:
- Confirm whether the failing application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Open Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable download page.
- Download the architecture matching the application.
- Install the redistributable.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected application again.
A 32-bit application needs the x86 package even on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit application needs the x64 package. Install both only when separate applications require both architectures.
Do not install Visual C++ merely because photoshop.dll is named in the error. The runtime is not the primary repair for a missing Adobe application file.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use Windows repair tools when you see broader system corruption, repeated system-file errors, Windows Update problems, or several unrelated applications failing. They do not normally recreate a private Adobe DLL.
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before System File Checker:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Photoshop.
Do not close the window while either scan is running. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the repair process only as Microsoft recommends and focus on the Photoshop reinstall for the missing Adobe file.
Running these commands is useful when Windows itself is damaged, but successful SFC or DISM output does not prove that photoshop.dll has been restored.
Recommended Free Tools
When manually repeating SFC and DISM becomes difficult to track, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling Photoshop remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that application.
Fix 7: Check plug-ins and the Windows user profile
A third-party Photoshop plug-in can prevent Photoshop from starting or trigger an error during launch.
To test for plug-in involvement:
- Hold Shift while launching Photoshop.
- If Photoshop asks whether to skip loading optional or third-party plug-ins, confirm.
- Test the application.
If Photoshop starts, disable or remove recently installed plug-ins through the plug-in’s own installer or Photoshop’s plug-in settings. Update each plug-in from its legitimate developer before enabling it again.
If the problem affects only one Windows account:
- Create a temporary local Windows user account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Launch Creative Cloud and Photoshop, subject to the account’s Adobe access.
- Test whether the error appears.
If Photoshop works under the new account, the original profile may have damaged permissions, inaccessible AppData data, or a corrupted configuration. Repairing the profile or migrating to a new one may be more appropriate than repeatedly reinstalling the DLL.

A graphics driver can cause Photoshop crashes, display problems, or startup failures, but it is not the normal owner of photoshop.dll. Driver repair should be a later step unless the error also mentions graphics initialization or Device Manager shows a problem.
Check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver if an update is available.
- Restart Windows.
For a rollback:
- Return to the device’s Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart Windows.
Use the computer or graphics-card manufacturer’s official driver source when Windows does not find a suitable driver. Avoid replacing graphics drivers just because photoshop.dll is missing.

A missing file can result from disk corruption, an interrupted update, malware, or unauthorized modification.
Recommended Free Tools
Run a security scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
If malware is suspected, do not restore a quarantined DLL simply to make Photoshop start. Remove the threat, update Windows and security definitions, and reinstall Photoshop from a trusted Adobe source.
System Restore may help when Photoshop worked before a recent system or software change:
- Press Windows+R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore.
System Restore is not guaranteed to restore application files and may not be available. Afterward, update or reinstall Photoshop if the error remains.
If other files disappear, applications become corrupted, or the drive reports errors, back up personal data and check the drive’s health before reinstalling software repeatedly.

Why regsvr32 normally does not apply
Do not run:
regsvr32 photoshop.dll
as a routine repair.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM or ActiveX components. An ordinary Photoshop resource or application DLL generally is not registered that way.
The command may produce:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That message does not prove that the DLL is defective. It usually means the file is not a self-registering component. Reinstall Photoshop instead.
Registry cleaners are also not a suitable repair. Removing registry entries does not recreate a missing application file and can damage unrelated software.
Why Windows Features and Device Manager are usually irrelevant
Windows Features can enable components such as .NET Framework or legacy support, but enabling random features does not replace photoshop.dll.

Do not download photoshop.dll separately
Random DLL download sites cannot reliably provide the exact Photoshop build, architecture, signature chain, or dependency set required by your installation. Even if the download has the right filename, it may be incompatible or malicious.
Never place an unverified copy in:

Use Creative Cloud or the original legitimate Adobe installer instead. Reinstalling the owning application restores the complete set of matching files rather than replacing one file in isolation.
Frequently asked questions
Is photoshop.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an Adobe Photoshop application component. It should not normally be stored in the Windows system folders.
Is photoshop.dll part of Visual C++?
No. Visual C++ errors name files such as msvcp110.dll, msvcr110.dll, or vcruntime140_1.dll. Those are separate Microsoft runtime dependencies.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
That is unsafe unless the other computer has the identical Photoshop release, architecture, installation state, and trusted file signature. Reinstalling Photoshop is safer and restores the surrounding dependencies.
Does sfc /scannow restore it?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, not private Adobe application files. Run it for suspected Windows corruption, but reinstall Photoshop for a missing photoshop.dll.
Why did the error appear after an update?
An interrupted update, incomplete installation, antivirus quarantine, disk problem, cleanup utility, or manual deletion can leave Photoshop without a matching file. The exact cause should be confirmed through installation and security history rather than assumed.
What if Photoshop starts in Safe Mode or with plug-ins skipped?
Disable or update third-party plug-ins and test again. If the error occurs only in one Windows account, investigate that account’s permissions and AppData configuration.
What information should I collect before asking for help?
Record the full error text, failing executable and path, Photoshop version, Windows version and build, whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit, antivirus quarantine history, the DLL’s publisher and signature status, and any Event Viewer application error. This information identifies whether the owner is Photoshop, another application, or a separate runtime dependency.
