The 60-second answer
nntpsvc.dll is a genuine Microsoft component named NNTP Service. It belongs to the old Network News Transfer Protocol service in legacy Internet Information Services, commonly associated with Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional, Windows Server 2003, and Exchange 2000 or 2003.
It is not a modern Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, or ordinary game dependency. A clean Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should not normally need it.
The safest fix is to identify which old service, installer, or application is requesting the file, then repair or reinstall that component from matching Microsoft or application media. Do not download a loose copy of nntpsvc.dll, copy it into System32, or run regsvr32 as a routine repair.

What is nntpsvc.dll
NNTP means Network News Transfer Protocol. It was used to operate text-based discussion groups and news servers before modern web forums and other communication platforms became dominant.
Microsoft exposed the service as NNTPSVC. On Windows Server 2003, the service allowed the computer to operate as an NNTP news server. IIS documentation also refers to the service through the IIsNntpService object.
Microsoft documents NNTP using these traditional ports:
- TCP 119 for standard NNTP
- TCP 563 for NNTP over SSL
The file’s old catalog description may identify it as part of “Microsoft Internet Services,” but the more useful product context is legacy IIS NNTP. Microsoft also documented NNTP as a dependency for Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange Server 2003. Exchange installations could disable the service, but removing IIS components without checking Exchange requirements could damage the installation.
See Microsoft’s documentation for the NNTP service and network ports, the IIS NNTP service object, and Exchange and IIS component requirements.
Why Windows 10 or Windows 11 is asking for it
On a modern computer, the error usually does not mean that Windows 11 accidentally lost a normal system DLL. More likely, one of these situations applies:
| Likely cause | What it means | Correct direction |
|---|---|---|
| Old IIS or Exchange component was removed | The program still expects the legacy service | Restore the matching component |
| Old installer has a hard-coded dependency | The installer was designed for an older Windows generation | Repair, replace, or remove the application |
| File was corrupted or deleted | Servicing, disk errors, cleanup, or deletion affected the component | Use component repair or matching media |
| Antivirus quarantined it | Security software removed or isolated an old binary | Check quarantine before restoring anything |
| Incompatible architecture or version | A 32-bit application expects a matching legacy component | Install the correct supported generation |
| Malware or tampering | Other system files or services also changed | Investigate the system before restoring files |
If a normal desktop application or game suddenly requests nntpsvc.dll, treat that as unusual. It may be an obsolete installer, bundled legacy software, a damaged installation, or a suspicious program. The filename alone does not prove that the requesting application legitimately needs NNTP.
First, identify what is requesting the file
Do this before repairing Windows. Restoring an old service that nobody needs can leave an obsolete network component installed for no reason.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check the full error dialog
Write down:
- The complete error text
- The executable name shown in the title or message
- The folder path, if displayed
- Whether the error appears during startup, application launch, or installation
- Whether it appears after an upgrade, restore, clone, cleanup, or antivirus detection
If the error names an Exchange service, IIS service, or old server application, component repair is more likely. If it names a game or unrelated desktop program, repair that program first.
Check Event Viewer
- Press
Win + X. - Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Check Application and System.
- Select Filter Current Log.
- Look around the time of the error.
- Open events that mention the executable, IIS, Exchange, service startup, side-by-side loading, or a missing module.
Also check:
- Press
Win + R. - Enter
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Look for an old NNTP-related service or a service belonging to the application named in the error.
Do not assume that a service is missing merely because nntpsvc.dll is missing. A broken IIS installation, missing service registration, damaged metabase configuration, or missing dependency can produce similar symptoms.
Check antivirus quarantine
Open Windows Security or the security product that detected the file.
In Windows Security:
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections involving
nntpsvc.dll, IIS, Exchange, or the requesting application.
Do not immediately restore the file. First verify:
- The original path
- The application that installed it
- The file’s digital signature
- Whether the surrounding IIS or Exchange installation is legitimate
- Whether the detection is accompanied by other suspicious files
If the file was part of a real legacy installation, repair that installation from trusted media instead of forcing a quarantined copy into a system directory.
Fix 1: Repair the application that reports the error
If the error appears when launching one old application, repair that application before changing Windows.
- Press
Win + I. - Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If there is no Repair option:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall.
- Use the original installer or the application’s supported repair media.
For an Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 system, use the original Exchange setup or repair process and verify IIS requirements first. Do not copy nntpsvc.dll from another server. Exchange may depend on a specific IIS generation, service registration, configuration, and set of supporting files.
If the application is no longer supported and only requests NNTP because of an obsolete installer, the correct fix may be replacing or removing that application rather than restoring the service.
Fix 2: Restore NNTP on a legacy Windows system
This applies to a genuinely supported legacy installation, such as Windows Server 2003, not to a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC.

Microsoft documented the following Windows Components Wizard path for Windows Server 2003:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Add or Remove Programs.
- Select Add/Remove Windows Components.
- Select Internet Information Services (IIS).
- Select Details.
- Select Network News Transfer Protocol Service (NNTP).
- Complete the wizard.
- Insert matching Windows installation media when prompted.
- Restart the server if requested.
- Confirm that the application or service now starts.
Component names can vary by Windows edition and service-pack media. Use installation media that matches the installed operating system and service-pack level as closely as possible.
Do not install the current IIS role on Windows 10 or Windows 11 expecting it to recreate IIS 6 NNTP. Modern IIS is not equivalent to the old IIS NNTP service.
Fix 3: Repair Windows system files
SFC and DISM are useful when the file belongs to the currently installed protected Windows component set. They are not guaranteed to recreate an optional legacy IIS 5.x or IIS 6 NNTP installation.
On a supported current Windows system:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft documents that DISM can obtain repair files through Windows Update and that SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged versions. See Microsoft’s SFC instructions and DISM and SFC repair guidance.
If DISM cannot find repair files, use a matching repair source rather than an arbitrary Windows image:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with a source that matches the installed Windows edition and version. Microsoft explains this process in its Windows image repair documentation.
SFC may report that it found no integrity violations even though an old application still cannot find nntpsvc.dll. That can happen when the file belongs to an optional legacy component that is not part of the current protected-file set.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Running DISM and SFC manually means tracking each result and determining whether the repair source actually changed anything. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system-file and Windows-component problems and show what needs attention, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected legacy application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the dependency.
Fix 4: Check Windows Features, but do not force a modern replacement
Windows 10 and Windows 11 may include modern IIS components, but enabling IIS does not prove that the old NNTP service is available.
To inspect available features:
- Press
Win + R. - Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the available Internet Information Services entries.
- Do not enable unrelated IIS services merely because an old program requests
nntpsvc.dll. - Close the dialog without changes unless you know the application’s supported requirements.
If the old application documentation specifically requires a legacy IIS version, use a compatible supported environment or migration plan. Do not treat modern IIS as a drop-in replacement for IIS 6 NNTP.
Fix 5: Check architecture and file paths
A 32-bit application and a 64-bit Windows installation can use different locations and dependencies. A 32-bit program may load from an application folder or the 32-bit Windows subsystem, while 64-bit services use a different component layout.
Check the operating system architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
Then identify the requesting executable:
- Check its installation folder.
- Check Task Manager for a running process.
- Review the application’s documentation.
- Look for a 32-bit marker in the application name or installer.
- Check Event Viewer for the process path.
Do not solve an architecture mismatch by copying a file between System32, SysWOW64, an IIS folder, or an application directory. A DLL from a different IIS generation can have incompatible exports, dependencies, configuration expectations, or digital signatures.
There is no verified public Microsoft record for a universal nntpsvc.dll file size, hash, or set of 32-bit and 64-bit filenames. Matching the component and operating-system generation is more reliable than matching a filename.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when diagnostics point to a driver problem
A display, chipset, storage, or network driver does not normally provide nntpsvc.dll. Updating drivers is therefore not a primary fix for this error.
Consider it only if the error began after a system migration or if Event Viewer shows device failures, storage corruption, or service crashes alongside the DLL message.

To check drivers manually:
- Press
Win + X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Network adapters, Storage controllers, and System devices.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider, date, and version.
- Obtain an updated driver from the computer or hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and retest.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the versions that need attention, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and it will not replace the IIS or Exchange repair required for a genuine nntpsvc.dll dependency.
Why regsvr32 is usually the wrong command
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair tool.

Microsoft documents the command syntax as:
regsvr32 [/u] [/s] [/n] [/i[:cmdline]] <Dllname>
There is no verified evidence that nntpsvc.dll is an independently self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL. Therefore, do not routinely run:
regsvr32 nntpsvc.dll
That command cannot recreate a missing IIS service, restore Exchange configuration, repair an IIS metabase, or supply another missing dependency. If it reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, that confirms registration was not applicable. Reinstall or repair the component instead.

Why downloading nntpsvc.dll is unsafe
A random DLL download can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to another Windows release, or lack a valid Microsoft signature. Even a genuine-looking copy may not fix the actual problem because the application could be missing:
- The IIS service registration
- Exchange configuration
- Supporting DLLs
- Service permissions
- An IIS metabase entry
- The correct application architecture
- A matching service-pack or operating-system component
Never copy a downloaded DLL into System32, SysWOW64, an IIS directory, or an application folder as a first response. Use matching Windows installation media, original Exchange media, the application’s official installer, Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.
Should NNTP remain enabled
NNTP is an obsolete service. If the machine no longer operates an NNTP server or an Exchange 2000/2003 workload requires it, leaving the component enabled creates unnecessary maintenance and exposure.
After confirming that no application depends on it:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Back up the system and application configuration.
- Check services and scheduled tasks.
- Confirm that Exchange or another legacy application is not using NNTP.
- Disable or remove the obsolete component through the supported product procedure.
- Review firewall rules for TCP 119 and TCP 563.
- Monitor the application and System logs after removal.
Microsoft’s IIS 6.0 security guidance recommends disabling unnecessary IIS subcomponents. Do not expose an obsolete NNTP service publicly merely to silence an error.
Frequently asked questions
Is nntpsvc.dll a virus?
The filename is associated with a legitimate Microsoft legacy service, but malware can use similar names or replace legitimate files. Verify the path, digital signature, requesting application, antivirus history, and surrounding installation.
Is nntpsvc.dll part of Windows 11?
It is not normally expected on a clean Windows 11 installation. Modern IIS does not automatically include the old IIS NNTP service.
Can Visual C++ Redistributable fix this error?
There is no evidence that Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is the correct repair for nntpsvc.dll. Restore the IIS, Exchange, or application component that actually requests the file.
Recommended Free Tools
Will SFC restore nntpsvc.dll?
Not necessarily. SFC can repair protected files in the installed Windows image, but it may not recreate an optional legacy IIS component.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. The other computer may use a different Windows generation, architecture, service pack, configuration, or signature. Repair the component from matching media.
Does reinstalling IIS on Windows 11 install NNTP?
No. Current IIS is not a replacement for the legacy IIS NNTP service.
What if the error appears in a game?
That is unusual. Inspect the game installer, launcher, recently installed software, and antivirus history. Repair or reinstall the game only from its legitimate installer, and investigate any suspicious executable requesting the file.
What information should I collect before asking for help?
Record the Windows edition and architecture, IIS or Exchange version, complete error text, executable path, Event Viewer entries, antivirus quarantine history, whether the system was upgraded or cloned, and whether the file or surrounding files have valid Microsoft signatures.
The correct repair for nntpsvc.dll is usually component restoration, application repair, or migration, not a loose DLL download. Identify the requester first, then match the repair to the Windows and application generation.
