php_pdo_sqlsrv_7_ts_x64.dll is not a Windows system file. It is Microsoft’s PDO_SQLSRV PHP extension for SQL Server, and this exact filename belongs to Microsoft Drivers 4.0 for PHP for SQL Server.
The filename means PHP 7.0, Thread Safe, 64-bit Windows. It must load with 64-bit Thread Safe PHP 7.0 and php7ts.dll. If your PHP installation uses another version, NTS mode, or 32-bit architecture, replacing the file alone will not work.

Fix 1: Identify the PHP build before replacing anything
Time needed: 5 minutes
Open Command Prompt and run:
php --ini
php -i | findstr /I "PHP Version Thread Safety Architecture extension_dir"
php -v
Check the results:
PHP Versionshould be 7.0 for this exact legacy DLL.Thread Safetyshould be enabled.Architectureshould be x64.extension_dirshould point to the PHP installation’s extension folder.php --inishows whichphp.inithe command-line PHP uses.
If php is not recognized, use the full path to the PHP executable, for example:
Recommended Free Tools
C:phpphp.exe --ini
IIS, Apache, XAMPP, and WAMP can use a different PHP installation from the one found in Command Prompt. To check the web server’s PHP configuration, create a temporary file named phpinfo.php in the site directory:

<?php phpinfo();
Open that file through the affected website and check Loaded Configuration File, PHP Version, Thread Safety, Architecture, and extension_dir. Delete the file after checking it.
If the application uses PHP 7.1 or later, PHP 8, NTS PHP, or 32-bit PHP, do not force this DLL into that installation. Download the Microsoft PHP driver release matching the PHP version, thread-safety mode, and architecture instead. Microsoft’s driver compatibility table identifies the supported combinations.
Fix 2: Install the complete matching PHP SQL Server driver
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
The safest repair is to reinstall the complete Microsoft PHP driver package, not to download one loose DLL.
For an exact PHP 7.0 Thread Safe x64 installation, the relevant legacy package is Microsoft Drivers 4.0 for PHP for SQL Server. Its Windows driver table lists:
php_pdo_sqlsrv_7_ts_x64.dll
The package should be obtained through Microsoft’s PHP driver downloads or from a trusted backup of the original PHP stack.
Then:
- Stop IIS, Apache, XAMPP, or WAMP.
- Find the active
extension_dirfromphpinfo()orphp -i. - Place the matching driver files in that directory, normally a PHP
extfolder. - Do not place the file in
C:WindowsSystem32,C:WindowsSysWOW64, or the application’s random working directory. - Open the active
php.ini. - Add or correct this line:
extension=php_pdo_sqlsrv_7_ts_x64.dll
- Remove stale entries for incompatible PHP versions or TS/NTS variants.
- Save
php.ini. - Restart the web server or IIS application pool.
The PHP extension also requires the Microsoft ODBC Driver for SQL Server. Install a compatible version from Microsoft’s ODBC Driver download page. Older PHP driver packages can have narrower ODBC compatibility, so do not assume that the newest ODBC release is automatically correct for PHP 7.0.
Microsoft’s Windows environment setup guide follows the same general order: PHP, ODBC, Microsoft PHP drivers, then the web server configuration.

Fix 3: Enable the correct extension
Time needed: 5 minutes
pdo_sqlsrv is for PHP applications that connect through PDO. It is different from sqlsrv, which provides the procedural SQLSRV API.
Use pdo_sqlsrv when the application contains code such as:
$pdo = new PDO("sqlsrv:Server=localhost;Database=example", $user, $password);
Use sqlsrv when it contains:
$conn = sqlsrv_connect($serverName, $connectionInfo);
An application may require either extension or both. For PDO applications, enable the PDO driver:
extension=php_pdo_sqlsrv_7_ts_x64.dll
If the application also calls sqlsrv_connect(), install and enable the matching SQLSRV extension as well. Do not enable both Thread Safe and Non-Thread Safe versions. PHP must load only the variant matching its own build.
Microsoft’s loading instructions explain how PHP finds extensions through extension_dir and why the server must be restarted after changing php.ini.
Check the result:
php -m
You should see:
pdo_sqlsrv
For a more detailed check:
php -i | findstr /I "pdo_sqlsrv sqlsrv"
If the command-line check succeeds but the website still fails, the web server is using another PHP executable or another php.ini.
Fix 4: Read the startup error as a compatibility clue
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Different messages point to different failures.
“Unable to load dynamic library”
PHP cannot load the configured extension. Confirm that the filename is correct, the file is inside the active extension_dir, and the edited php.ini is the one used by the failing process.
“The specified module could not be found”
This does not always mean the named PHP DLL is absent. It can mean that a dependency, especially the Microsoft ODBC Driver or a required runtime component, is missing.

Verify the ODBC installation and the PHP architecture. A 64-bit extension cannot load into 32-bit PHP.
“The specified procedure could not be found”
This usually indicates a binary mismatch. Common causes include using a PHP 7.0 extension with PHP 7.1, PHP 7.4, or PHP 8, or mixing a TS extension with NTS PHP.
Install the driver matching the exact PHP major and minor version.
“%1 is not a valid Win32 application”
This generally indicates an architecture or binary-format mismatch. Check whether PHP and the extension are both x64 or both x86. Also check TS versus NTS.

The PHP process started, but pdo_sqlsrv did not load. Confirm that pdo_sqlsrv appears in php -m, then inspect the startup error and extension_dir.
“Call to undefined function sqlsrv_connect()”
The application is using the procedural SQLSRV API, but the sqlsrv extension is not loaded. Installing only pdo_sqlsrv will not provide sqlsrv_connect().
Microsoft lists these extension-loading symptoms in its PHP SQL driver troubleshooting guide.

- Reinstall PHP and the matching Microsoft PHP driver package.
- Reinstall the compatible Microsoft ODBC Driver.

- Confirm

- Run

Do not begin with SFC or DISM unless there is independent evidence that Windows system components are damaged. This DLL belongs to the PHP SQL Server driver stack, not to protected Windows files.
If Windows itself is also reporting damaged components, open Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator and run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands finish, then retest PHP.
If repeatedly hunting through PHP versions and rerunning SFC or DISM is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems; its free scan identifies issues, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the correct PHP driver package.
Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software may quarantine a PHP extension after a scan or PHP-stack update.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for the quarantined PHP extension.
- Restore it only if it came from Microsoft’s official package or a known-good application backup.
- If uncertain, leave it quarantined.
- Reinstall the complete driver package from Microsoft instead.
- Run a full security scan.
Do not add a broad exclusion for the PHP directory merely to suppress the error.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall the PHP stack rather than the DLL
Time needed: 20–60 minutes
PHP 7.0 is obsolete, and current Microsoft PHP driver releases target newer PHP versions. A current package may not provide this old filename.
The better long-term repair is:
- Check whether the application supports a newer PHP release.
- Back up the application and database configuration.
- Upgrade PHP to a supported version.
- Install the corresponding current Microsoft PHP driver.
- Install the required ODBC Driver.
- Update
php.ini. - Restart the web server.
- Test the application in a staging copy first.
Use Microsoft’s PHP driver support matrix to check support boundaries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf the application cannot be upgraded, isolate the legacy PHP 7.0 installation and use the historically compatible driver package. Do not mix its DLLs with a newer PHP installation.
If the file is reported as part of a packaged application rather than a normal PHP, IIS, Apache, WAMP, or XAMPP setup, use that application’s official repair or verify-files feature. For ordinary PHP installations, reinstalling the matching PHP driver is the correct path.
If the file belongs to a specific application and the application itself is damaged, reinstalling that application remains the definitive repair.
When updating drivers manually means guessing which PHP, ODBC, and related drivers are stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver problems; its free scan shows findings, while driver installation requires the full version. It is optional, and the Microsoft PHP package remains the authoritative source for this extension.

Avoid sites offering a single downloadable copy of php_pdo_sqlsrv_7_ts_x64.dll. A loose DLL may be modified, incomplete, or built for a different PHP version, architecture, or thread-safety mode. It may also omit the ODBC dependency.
Never run regsvr32 on this file. It is a PHP extension, not a COM or ActiveX library. PHP loads it through php.ini.
Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 is also wrong. PHP searches its configured extension_dir, and global Windows registration does not make PHP recognize the extension.
Causes and fixes at a glance
| Cause | Correct response |
|---|---|
| PHP version mismatch | Install the driver matching the exact PHP version |
| TS/NTS mismatch | Use the extension matching PHP’s Thread Safety setting |
| x86/x64 mismatch | Match PHP, ODBC, and extension architecture |
| Missing ODBC driver | Install a compatible Microsoft ODBC Driver |
Wrong php.ini |
Check CLI with php --ini and web PHP with phpinfo() |
Wrong extension_dir |
Place the DLL in the configured PHP extension directory |
| Quarantine or corruption | Restore only trusted files or reinstall the complete package |
| PHP 7.0 limitation | Upgrade PHP or isolate a compatible legacy stack |
Final verification
Run:
php --ini
php -m
php -v
Confirm that pdo_sqlsrv appears in the module list. Then restart IIS, Apache, WAMP, or XAMPP and test the application again.
If the extension loads but the application cannot connect to SQL Server, the DLL problem is resolved. Investigate the server name, credentials, authentication mode, firewall, SQL Server availability, and ODBC connection settings separately. A successful extension load does not guarantee a successful database connection.
FAQ
Is php_pdo_sqlsrv_7_ts_x64.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a Microsoft PHP extension installed as part of the Microsoft Drivers for PHP for SQL Server package.
Can I use it with PHP 8?
No. This exact filename identifies PHP 7.0 Thread Safe x64. PHP 8 requires the matching current driver build.
Do I need both pdo_sqlsrv and sqlsrv?
Only if the application uses both APIs. PDO applications need pdo_sqlsrv; code calling sqlsrv_connect() needs sqlsrv.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Where should the DLL go?
In PHP’s configured extension_dir, usually the PHP ext directory, not a Windows system directory.
Why does the error say the module is missing when the file exists?
A dependency such as the Microsoft ODBC Driver may be missing, or PHP may be unable to load the file because of a version, architecture, or TS/NTS mismatch.
