Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows, record three details:
- Which program or game shows the error
- When it appears, such as during launch, after an update, or when opening a particular file
- Whether the failing program is 32-bit or 64-bit

The qt-mt338.dll error usually belongs to the application that installed it, not to Windows itself. The safest repair is to restore that application’s original files rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What is qt-mt338.dll
qt-mt338.dll is an old Qt runtime library associated with the Qt 3.3.8 era. Qt was a C++ application framework originally developed by Trolltech, and programs built with it commonly placed their required Qt DLLs beside the program executable.

This file is not a Windows system component. It should not normally be copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Reported file databases commonly show version 3.3.8.1 and identify the file with Qt and Trolltech-era software. Size and architecture reports are inconsistent, however, so do not trust a download page’s claim that a particular copy is the correct 32-bit or 64-bit build.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application
This is the most likely fix for a missing or damaged Qt DLL.
Identify the owning program
If the error appears in a dialog, note the application name shown in the title bar. If it does not identify the program:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Look for the program that remains open or appears briefly when the error occurs.
- Right-click it and select Open file location.
- Check the folder containing the executable and look for
qt-mt338.dll.
You can also search for the file:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select This PC.
- Search for
qt-mt338.dll. - Right-click a result and choose Open file location.
The correct copy will usually be in the same folder as the affected program, or in one of its application subfolders. Multiple copies can legitimately exist because different programs may bundle different Qt builds.
Try Windows’ repair option
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
A successful repair normally removes the missing-file message and allows the application to open. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, try Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data.
Older desktop programs may use the classic installer:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Change, Uninstall/Change, or Repair, depending on what the installer provides.
- Complete the repair and restart Windows.
Reinstall from the official installer
If repair fails:
- Back up the application’s documents, profiles, saves, or configuration files.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer or obtain the installer from the software developer’s official support or download page.
- Install the program again.
- Launch it once using its normal shortcut.
For a game, open its official launcher and look for Verify, Verify integrity, Scan and repair, or a similarly named option. This replaces missing files without requiring a full reinstall.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf the application is very old, install it into its normal application folder and try Run as administrator once. Right-click the shortcut, select Properties, open Compatibility, and use the compatibility options only if the program’s installer or launcher itself will not run.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate application file, particularly after a definition update or when the old program is no longer maintained.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
qt-mt338.dllor the affected application. - Confirm that the detected file’s original path belongs to the installed program.
- Do not restore it if the path is a temporary folder, a download folder, or an unfamiliar application directory.
- If the detection is confirmed false by the application vendor or a trusted security review, restore the file.
- Reinstall the application instead if the file was modified, its source is uncertain, or the detection remains suspicious.
After restoring a file, update Windows Security and run a scan. If the file repeatedly disappears, the application may be outdated, its installation may be modified, or the detection may be legitimate.
Fix 3: Check whether the DLL is present but cannot load
Not every message means the named file is absent. The wording “The specified module could not be found” can indicate that qt-mt338.dll exists but another DLL it needs is missing.
Recommended Free Tools
First, check the application folder:
- Open the program’s installation directory.
- Confirm whether
qt-mt338.dllis present. - Do not replace it immediately if it is already there.
- Read the complete error message for the name of another missing module.
- Repair or reinstall the application if another dependency is named.
A message such as “The procedure entry point could not be located” usually indicates an incompatible or mismatched Qt build. A “not designed to run on Windows” message or error 0xc000007b also points toward an invalid architecture or damaged binary rather than a simple missing file.
Use a reputable dependency-analysis tool only if you are comfortable interpreting its results, or provide the complete error and installation path to the application vendor. Do not delete individual DLLs based on an automated list without first creating a backup.
Fix 4: Confirm 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Windows’ own architecture does not tell you the architecture of the application. A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit programs, and those programs need 32-bit Qt libraries.
To check the application:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and select Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if Windows provides that column.
- Check whether the program is listed as 32-bit or 64-bit.
You can also right-click the program executable, select Properties, and inspect the Details tab, although the tab may not clearly identify architecture.

Public metadata for qt-mt338.dll contains conflicting architecture and size claims, so a file labelled “64-bit” or “32-bit” on a download page is not proof that it belongs to your program.
The dependable solution is to restore the complete application installation from its original installer or vendor package. Do not mix a DLL from one Qt application with another.
Fix 5: Install Microsoft Visual C++ only when required
qt-mt338.dll is a Qt library. It is not the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 runtime and should not be replaced with vcruntime140.dll, msvcp140.dll, or another Microsoft file.
Install or repair a Visual C++ Redistributable only when one of these conditions applies:

Includes Full Driver Pack – ensures hardware compatibility after installation. Automatically detects and installs drivers for most PCs.
- Premium Hardware & Reliable Support – built with high-quality flash chips for speed and longevity. TECH STORE ON provides responsive customer support within 24 hours.
- The application’s official instructions require it.
- The error names a Microsoft runtime DLL.
- The application installer includes it as a prerequisite.
- Dependency analysis shows that the Qt DLL cannot load because a Microsoft runtime is absent.
Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Install the package and architecture required by the application, then restart Windows and test it again.
If the error still names qt-mt338.dll, reinstall the owning application. Installing unrelated runtime packages will not recreate an application-bundled Qt file.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows corruption
SFC and DISM do not normally restore third-party Qt files. Use them when Windows has other symptoms, such as repeated Windows Update failures, damaged system components, or several unrelated system programs failing.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the application. If SFC reports repaired files, check whether other Windows problems have improved. If the same application still reports qt-mt338.dll, return to the application repair or reinstall steps.
Running these commands repeatedly without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting less clear. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies; its repair actions require the full version. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when this Qt file belongs to that program.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when the symptoms support it
A graphics or device driver is not a normal cause of a missing qt-mt338.dll. Consider driver troubleshooting only when the application also crashes with display errors, hardware failures, or other symptoms that began after a driver change.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also select Properties → Driver to review the installed driver and use Roll Back Driver when the problem began immediately after an update. Avoid removing a working driver merely because the Qt error exists.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the specific versions involved; installing drivers through its full version is optional, not required for the usual Qt repair. If the file belongs to a particular application, repairing or reinstalling that application is still the primary solution.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why regsvr32 is usually wrong
Do not run this as a routine repair:
regsvr32 qt-mt338.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A normal Qt runtime library is not generally registered this way. The command may produce an error stating that the entry point was not found, and it will not restore a missing or damaged application installation.
Only register a DLL when the software vendor specifically instructs you to do so and identifies that DLL as a self-registering component. Microsoft documents the command’s scope in its regsvr32 documentation.
Do not copy a downloaded DLL into Windows
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- A malicious or modified file
- The wrong architecture
- The wrong Qt build
- A different export set or dependency chain
- A file that hides the real application installation problem
Copying the file into System32 or SysWOW64 can also create version conflicts and make it harder to determine which program is loading it. There is no verified modern Microsoft or Qt standalone Windows redistributable intended for ordinary users to install this individual Qt 3 DLL.
Use the affected application’s official installer, repair package, quarantine history, backup, or vendor support package. If you are rebuilding the application as a developer, deploy the matching Qt runtime beside the executable rather than treating it as a system-wide file.
If reinstalling does not fix the error
Work through this checklist:
- Confirm that you repaired the same program named in the error.
- Check whether the shortcut launches a different executable than the one you inspected.
- Look for duplicate installations in different folders.
- Check antivirus quarantine again after reinstalling.
- Confirm that the installer completed without errors.
- Read the entire message for a second missing module.
- Check the application’s architecture and use its matching vendor build.
- Test the program from its installation directory instead of an old shortcut.
- Use System Restore only if the failure began after a known system change and a restore point predates that change.
- Contact the application vendor with the exact error, executable path, Windows version, and installer version.
If the application is no longer supported, compatibility mode or a maintained replacement may be necessary. The DLL filename alone cannot establish which option is appropriate.
Frequently asked questions
Is qt-mt338.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an application DLL associated with an old Qt runtime and should normally be stored with the program that uses it.
Is qt-mt338.dll the modern Qt runtime?
No. It belongs to the Qt 3 generation, not the current Qt runtime family. A current Qt installer is not a verified replacement for this individual file.
Should I download qt-mt338.dll?
No. Restore it through the owning application’s installer, repair function, backup, or vendor package. A same-named download may be unsafe or incompatible.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallShould I copy it into System32?
No. Qt application libraries normally stay beside the application executable. System-wide copying can introduce conflicts.
Do I need Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only if the application requires it, the installer includes it, the error names a Microsoft runtime, or dependency analysis identifies it as missing. It does not replace qt-mt338.dll.
Will SFC or DISM restore the file?
Normally no. They repair protected Windows components and the Windows component store, not a third-party application’s bundled Qt runtime.
Why does the error say the module cannot be found when the DLL exists?
The loader may be unable to find one of qt-mt338.dll’s dependencies. The complete error and dependency analysis are needed to distinguish that case from a damaged or mismatched DLL.
