php_sqlite.dll is an old PHP SQLite extension, not a Windows system file. The safest fix is usually to identify the PHP installation raising the error, remove a stale SQLite 2 configuration entry, and enable the matching modern SQLite extensions instead.
What this file actually does
php_sqlite.dll is a PHP extension developed by The PHP Group. Its internal name is SQLite, and it belongs in PHP’s ext directory rather than in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

A PHP startup warning may look like this:
PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library './php_sqlite.dll' -
The specified module could not be found.
A separate application may show:
This application failed to start because php_sqlite.dll was not found.
The first message usually comes from PHP loading an obsolete or incorrect php.ini directive. The second may come from an older PHP-based application that genuinely expects its bundled PHP runtime.
Causes by symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Correct direction |
|---|---|---|
| PHP starts with an “Unable to load dynamic library” warning | A retained extension=php_sqlite.dll line in php.ini |
Find the active configuration and replace the obsolete directive |
php_sqlite.dll is absent, but php_sqlite3.dll exists |
Modern PHP is being asked to load the legacy extension | Enable SQLite3 or PDO SQLite instead |
| The DLL exists, but PHP says “specified module could not be found” | A dependency such as libsqlite3.dll or the Visual C++ runtime is unavailable |
Check the PHP directory, PATH, and runtime architecture |
Apache fails while php -m works |
Apache uses a different PHP executable or php.ini |
Check the Apache PHP module and its startup log |
| A bundled application will not start after files were copied | Its PHP version, architecture, or extension set is incomplete | Repair or reinstall that exact application |
| The file disappeared after an update or cleanup | Incomplete installation or antivirus quarantine | Check quarantine, then repair from the trusted installer |
| A 32-bit application is being paired with 64-bit PHP | Architecture mismatch | Restore the architecture supplied with the application |
The error names php_sqlite3.dll, php_pdo_sqlite.dll, or libsqlite3.dll |
The problem is not the legacy php_sqlite.dll file |
Diagnose the named modern file instead |
Fix 1: Identify the PHP installation actually in use
Do this before downloading, copying, or deleting anything. Windows can have several PHP installations: one from XAMPP, one from WampServer, one used by a development tool, and another selected by the system PATH.
Open Command Prompt:
- Press Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator only if the PHP installation is protected and the normal prompt cannot read it.
- Run:
where php
php --ini
php -v
php -m
php -i | findstr /I "Loaded Configuration File extension_dir Architecture Thread Safety"
Record the results.
where php shows which executable Windows finds first. php --ini identifies the configuration file used by that executable. The final command shows the loaded php.ini, extension directory, architecture, and thread-safety mode.

You are looking for one of these situations:
php_sqlite.dllexists: the installation may be legacy PHP.- Only
php_sqlite3.dllandphp_pdo_sqlite.dllexist: the PHP installation is modern. - None of the SQLite extensions exist: the PHP package is incomplete, or SQLite support was not included.
- The extension exists, but
libsqlite3.dllis missing: a newer SQLite3 extension may fail to load because its dependency is unavailable.
If php --ini reports the wrong file
Open the reported configuration file:
- Press Win+R.
- Enter the complete path to the file, such as:
C:pathtophpphp.ini
- Press Enter.
- Search for
sqlite. - Do not edit a different
php.iniin another PHP folder.
Command-line PHP and Apache or IIS may use different executables and configurations. A successful php -m result does not prove that the web server is using the same PHP installation.
Fix 2: Remove the obsolete directive from modern PHP
This is the most likely fix when a current PHP installation complains specifically about php_sqlite.dll.
Open the active php.ini reported by php --ini. Find a line similar to:
extension=php_sqlite.dll
Comment it out by placing a semicolon at the beginning:
;extension=php_sqlite.dll
Do not enable both the old and modern SQLite extensions simply because both names contain sqlite.
Check which files are present in the ext directory. If the modern files exist, use the corresponding directives:
extension=sqlite3
extension=pdo_sqlite
Some distributions use explicit filenames:
extension=php_sqlite3.dll
extension=php_pdo_sqlite.dll
Use the style already used by the surrounding PHP configuration and match the files actually present.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Also verify that extension_dir points to the same installation’s ext directory. For example:
extension_dir="C:pathtophpext"
Then save the file and restart the service:
- XAMPP: Open the XAMPP Control Panel, click Stop beside Apache, then click Start.
- WampServer: Right-click the tray icon and choose Restart All Services.
- Apache installed as a service: Open Services, find the Apache service, right-click it, and select Restart.
- IIS: Open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager, select the server, choose Restart in the Actions pane, or restart the relevant application pool.
- A desktop PHP application: Close and reopen the application.
Confirm the change:
php -m | findstr /I "sqlite"
A working modern installation normally reports sqlite3 and possibly pdo_sqlite. If the warning remains, repeat the check from the PHP executable used by Apache, IIS, or the application rather than relying on the system PATH.
Fix 3: Repair an incomplete PHP, XAMPP, or WampServer installation
If the correct extension files are absent, repair the complete PHP distribution instead of sourcing one DLL.
First preserve your application data and configuration:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Back up the website or application directory.
- Export databases if the application uses them.
- Copy the existing
php.ini. - Record the PHP version from
php -v. - Record whether the build is x86 or x64.
- Record whether it is Thread Safe or Non-Thread Safe.
Then use the original installer or the official PHP Windows package that matches the application. PHP packages differ by version, architecture, compiler family, and thread-safety mode.
Choose the replacement carefully:
- x86 for an application that requires 32-bit PHP
- x64 for a 64-bit PHP installation
- Thread Safe (TS) when PHP is loaded directly into Apache as a module
- Non-Thread Safe (NTS) for the FastCGI style commonly used with IIS
- The same PHP release family required by the application
Do not replace a legacy application’s PHP runtime with the newest PHP package without checking compatibility. Older code may call functions such as:
sqlite_open()
Modern code is more likely to use:
SQLite3
or PDO with an SQLite driver. Those are different APIs.
After reinstalling:
- Restore application data, not arbitrary DLLs.
- Reapply only the necessary configuration settings.
- Check
extension_dir. - Enable the SQLite extension that exists in the new
extdirectory. - Restart the web server or application.
- Run:
php -m | findstr /I "sqlite"
Success means PHP starts without the original warning and the application can open its database. If the application still specifically demands php_sqlite.dll, it may be tied to legacy PHP and needs its original bundled runtime rather than a modern replacement.
Fix 4: Match the PHP architecture and build
A 32-bit extension cannot be loaded by 64-bit PHP, and a 64-bit extension cannot be loaded by 32-bit PHP. Thread safety and compiler compatibility matter as well.
Run:
php -v
Look for architecture and thread-safety information. Then compare it with the PHP package supplied by the application.
For Apache, verify that the Apache configuration points to the intended PHP directory. For IIS, verify the FastCGI application points to the intended php-cgi.exe.
A mismatch often produces a startup message such as:
Recommended Free Tools
Unable to load dynamic library
or:
The specified module could not be found
If the extension file is present but will not load, install the matching PHP build rather than trying several unrelated DLLs. Keep the PHP files from one package together.
Fix 5: Restore dependencies and the Visual C++ runtime
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that php_sqlite.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a dependency required by the extension.
For modern PHP, check whether the PHP directory contains:
Rank #2
- Video Link to instructions and Free support VIA Amazon
- Great Support fast responce
- 15 plus years of experiance
- Key is included
dir C:pathtophplibsqlite3.dll
PHP 7.4 and later require libsqlite3.dll to be discoverable through PATH when loading SQLite3. The safest arrangement is to keep the matching PHP files together and ensure the PHP directory is available to the service environment.
Do not copy libsqlite3.dll or PHP extensions into System32. That can cause another application to load the wrong library.
PHP builds also depend on a compatible Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Install or repair the package matching the PHP build and architecture from Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
For 32-bit PHP, the x86 runtime may be required even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Restart the PHP service after repairing the runtime, then test again:
php -m | findstr /I "sqlite"
If the error persists, capture the complete startup warning. The missing dependency may be a compiler runtime, libsqlite3.dll, or another library named in the detailed error.

If the file existed and then disappeared, inspect your security software before restoring anything.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and type Windows Security.

php_sqlite.dll is a third-party PHP file, so System File Checker normally cannot restore it. Use Windows component repair when Windows features are malfunctioning more broadly or system files are also reporting errors.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Press Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test PHP again. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC; see Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions.
Running these commands will not recreate a missing PHP extension. If they report that Windows repaired files but PHP still cannot load SQLite, return to the PHP package, configuration, and dependency checks.
When manually repeating SFC and DISM is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the component problems involved and show what it found; the free scan identifies issues, while repair is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the affected PHP application remains the definitive fix for a missing PHP extension.
Fix 8: Do not use Device Manager or regsvr32 for this file
Device Manager is for hardware drivers, not PHP extensions. It cannot repair php_sqlite.dll, and Windows Features does not provide a PHP SQLite package.
Likewise, do not register this file with regsvr32. PHP extensions are loaded by PHP through php.ini; they are not normally ActiveX or COM components. Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a tool for registering DLLs that expose the appropriate registration functions, which does not make it a PHP repair method.
If the wider problem involves a hardware driver rather than PHP, use Device Manager:
- Press Win+X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant hardware category.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers, or install the driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of hunting through many driver versions by scanning for outdated drivers; the free scan shows what it finds, while installation is handled by the full version. A hardware-driver update will not replace a PHP extension, so repair the PHP application when this file is the actual error.
Fix 9: Restore an application that genuinely requires legacy php_sqlite.dll
Some old PHP applications use SQLite 2 functions and genuinely require the legacy extension. Indicators include calls to sqlite_open() or an application package that includes its own old PHP directory.
In that case:
- Find the application’s original installer, repair option, or verification option.
- Back up the application’s data and configuration.
- Run the installer or repair tool as administrator.
- Choose the original installation directory when prompted.
- If the application has a Repair, Verify files, or Reinstall option, use it before copying anything manually.
- Confirm that the restored PHP executable,
php.ini, andextphp_sqlite.dllbelong to the same package. - Restart the application.
If the original installer is unavailable, use the application’s official support or distribution channel. Do not download a historical php_sqlite.dll from a random DLL website. A file from another PHP release can have the wrong architecture, compiler dependencies, ABI, or configuration expectations, and it may be unsafe.
