What is pixietool-cht.dll?
Available file inventories describe the file as Pixie5 Registration and Licensing Tool, developed by Pinnacle Systems. It is an application DLL, not part of Windows, DirectX, or a standard Microsoft runtime.
Older Pinnacle installations may contain related files such as:

The exact Pinnacle product can vary by installation. The file has been associated with older Pinnacle software, including installations containing the Pixie5 licensing component, but the filename alone does not identify one universal parent application.
Some third-party file listings report a 32-bit Win32 build, approximately 64 KB in size, with version information reported as 5.3.0.98. Those are database records rather than a current Pinnacle release manifest. Treat them as clues, not as a reason to download a matching-looking file.
Is it a 32-bit or 64-bit DLL?
Available metadata identifies pixietool-cht.dll as Win32 or 32-bit. There is no reliable public evidence of a separate 64-bit build.
That does not mean Windows 11 must contain a copy in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. A 32-bit Pinnacle application normally loads its own application files from its installation directory. - “The program can’t start because pixietool-cht.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Cannot find pixietool-cht.dll.”
- “Cannot register pixietool-cht.dll.”
The wording gives useful direction:
- Not found or missing usually means the file was deleted, quarantined, or never installed.
- Missing or corrupted points to a damaged or incomplete installation.
- Specified module could not be found can mean that
pixietool-cht.dllexists but one of its dependencies does not. - Cannot register does not prove that registration is required. This file is not publicly documented as a self-registering COM server.
Before changing Windows, note what happened immediately before the error. Did it begin after uninstalling another Pinnacle product, updating the application, cleaning the disk, restoring a backup, or an antivirus detection? Is the affected Pinnacle program still installed? Fix 1: Repair the Pinnacle application
This is the preferred fix because the installer restores pixietool-cht.dll together with the other Pixie5 files and registry or licensing data the application expects.
Windows 11 Settings
- Close the Pinnacle application.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for the Pinnacle program that produces the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and launch the Pinnacle program again.
Not every traditional desktop application exposes Advanced options or Repair in Settings. If the option is missing, use Control Panel.

Control Panel
- Press
Win+R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find the affected Pinnacle program in Programs and Features.
- Right-click it, or select it and choose Change.
- Select Repair if the installer offers it.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
If the application opens afterward, the missing file was restored to the program directory. Do not move it elsewhere.
If repair fails, record the exact product name shown in Control Panel. That name is more useful than searching Windows folders for an isolated DLL.

Fix 2: Reinstall the exact Pinnacle product
When repair is unavailable or incomplete, reinstall the parent program rather than replacing only the DLL.
- Back up project files, presets, and any license information used by the Pinnacle application.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or press
Win+R, enterappwiz.cpl, and press Enter. - Select the affected Pinnacle product.
- Choose Uninstall and finish the removal process.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer, licensed installation media, or legitimate vendor-provided package.
- If the installer offers a destination folder, keep the normal application location unless the product documentation requires another path.
- Complete the installation before launching the program.
- Restart Windows once more and test the application.
Pinnacle’s support guidance uses reinstalling as the fallback when software updates do not install correctly. With older software, reinstalling is also safer than mixing files from different releases.
If the installer came from an unofficial repack and does not contain the Pixie5 files, do not fill the gap with a downloaded DLL. Find the original media or contact the product’s current support channel. If the old product is no longer supported, preserving the original installer and license information becomes especially important.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
A sudden disappearance is consistent with antivirus quarantine, although the filename alone cannot prove whether a detection was correct.

- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries around the time the Pinnacle program stopped launching.
- Expand any entry that names the Pinnacle installation or
pixietool-cht.dll. - Read the detection details and file path.
- If the file came from an untrusted installer, leave it quarantined and remove that installer.
- If the installation is known-good, verify the source and publisher before considering Restore or Allow on device.
- Reinstall the parent application if you are uncertain about the file’s provenance.
Microsoft warns that restoring a detected item can expose the device. A clean reinstall from trusted media is preferable to restoring an unknown copy.
After reinstalling, run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Select Full scan.
- Choose Scan now.
Fix 4: Confirm the file is in the application directory
Use this check to distinguish a missing file from a load failure.
- Right-click the Pinnacle shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for
pixietool-cht.dll,Pixie.dll, and related PixieTool files. - Check for a language-specific filename or a different letter casing.
Windows is not normally case-sensitive for local filenames, so different capitalization is not usually the cause. However, a language variant is not automatically interchangeable with pixietool-cht.dll.

If the file is present and the error still says “specified module could not be found,” reinstall the application. That message may refer to a dependency loaded by the DLL. Do not download several similarly named DLLs until the error changes, because that can create a mixed and harder-to-repair installation.
Fix 5: Try compatibility settings for the legacy program
Compatibility settings can help when the files are present but the old Pinnacle application does not behave correctly on current Windows.
- Open the Pinnacle installation folder.
- Right-click the main Pinnacle executable, not the DLL.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Start with an older Windows version suggested by the application’s original documentation.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the program.
You can also select Run this program as an administrator if the application needs access to its own licensing or configuration folders. Use this only for the Pinnacle executable and only if normal launching fails. It does not repair a missing DLL.
If compatibility mode changes nothing, clear the setting and continue with reinstalling the exact product.
Fix 6: Repair wider Windows component corruption
pixietool-cht.dll is not a Windows component, so DISM and SFC are not the primary fix. Use them when other Windows applications also fail, Windows updates are damaged, or system files show broader problems.

- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Pinnacle application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair protected Windows components. They do not download or recreate a third-party Pinnacle licensing DLL.

Fix 7: Check legacy Windows features only when the program requires them
Some old applications depend on Windows features such as legacy .NET components or older multimedia support. There is no evidence that enabling a random feature specifically restores pixietool-cht.dll, so do not turn on everything as a trial.
To inspect optional features:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the Windows Features list.
- Enable a feature only if the Pinnacle installer or the application documentation explicitly requires it.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
If Windows cannot install the selected feature, repair Windows Update first. Do not treat a Windows feature as a replacement for the Pixie5 installation.
Fix 8: Update or reinstall drivers only for related symptoms
A graphics or audio driver is not the normal source of a missing Pixie5 licensing DLL. Investigate drivers only if the Pinnacle program launches after the DLL repair but then crashes, shows display corruption, or cannot access capture hardware.

- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- If the device is malfunctioning after an update, open Properties > Driver and review Roll Back Driver, when available.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Avoid replacing drivers simply because pixietool-cht.dll is missing. A driver change will not normally restore an application DLL.

Win+R. - Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can roll back installed programs and system settings without changing personal files. It may not restore a complete Pinnacle installation, so reinstall the parent application if the error remains.
Why you should not copy this DLL to System32
Copying pixietool-cht.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is normally wrong.
Those directories are for Windows-managed components and registered system libraries. An application DLL is usually loaded relative to the program that needs it. A system-folder copy can:
- Give the application the wrong build
- Create conflicts with another program
- Leave the Pixie5 installation incomplete
- Hide the real missing dependency
- Make future repairs and uninstallers less reliable
The correct location should be chosen by the Pinnacle installer.

Why regsvr32 is not the answer
regsvr32 is intended for registration-capable OLE or COM libraries that provide an entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no public evidence that pixietool-cht.dll is such a component.
Do not run:
regsvr32 pixietool-cht.dll
A registration error does not repair a missing application dependency. It may instead produce an entry-point or load error, especially when the DLL was never designed for COM registration. Use regsvr32 only when the application vendor explicitly documents that a particular DLL must be registered.
Safe sources and what to avoid
Avoid DLL download pages, file mirrors, forum attachments, and repacked installers. A copied DLL can contain malware, belong to a different Pinnacle build, use the wrong architecture, or omit the companion files and licensing data the application needs.

Use these sources instead:
- The original Pinnacle installation media
- A backup of the licensed installer
- A legitimate vendor-provided installation package
- The vendor’s current support route for the product
- Windows Security to verify any restored installation
