What changes when you buy a PS5 game on disc or digitally?

Sony’s PS5 Quick Start Guide (CFI-71XX) says disc-based games can be played if a disc drive is installed, and that inserting a game disc starts installation of game data. For digital games, Sony says: “To purchase and download games, you’ll need to connect your console to the internet and sign in with your account.”

What does “owning” a PS5 game mean?
In everyday use, a disc purchase gives you physical game media, while a digital purchase gives your account access to the purchased game. Neither description should be read as a promise of unconditional ownership, unrestricted transfer, or perpetual online service. Sony’s guide notes that specific online features may be withdrawn on reasonable notice and that service availability is not guaranteed.
Disc copies still depend on hardware and the disc
A disc-based game needs a PS5 with a disc drive installed, and the disc must be present to play. Check your exact console model and drive configuration before buying a disc edition; the cited guide covers the CFI-71XX family.

Digital copies depend on account access
A digital purchase is accessed through the account that bought it. Buying and downloading require internet access and signing in. Once downloaded, console sharing settings can provide access to other users on one enabled PS5, within Sony’s stated limits.
Can I resell a physical PS5 game?
Do not assume that a disc can always be resold or transferred without restriction. Sony’s Software Usage Terms, October 2020 version, issued for Europe, say users must not resell disc-based or digital software unless Sony expressly authorizes it and, where another company publishes the software, that publisher additionally authorizes it.

Can I share my digital PS5 games?
Yes, within Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play limits. On a PS5 where the feature is enabled, any user can play the owner’s purchased and downloaded games, even when that console is offline. Sony says the feature can be enabled on one PS5 at a time.

Turn on Console Sharing and Offline Play
- Sign in to the PS5 with the account that purchased the games.
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Select Enable if the feature is not already active for that console.
Sony says the feature is automatically allowed on the first PS5 used to sign in. To enable it on a different PS5, disable it on the previous one first. If you cannot access a prior console, Sony offers remote deactivation through account management; remote deactivation of all devices is available only once every six months. Does sharing work the same way for PlayStation Plus and Share Play?
No. Console Sharing and Offline Play concerns access to purchased and downloaded games on one enabled PS5. PlayStation Plus benefit sharing and Share Play are separate features, and neither changes whether a game was bought on disc or digitally.

- PlayStation Plus: Sony says selected benefits can be shared with other users on a primary PS4 and one PS5 with the relevant setting enabled; not every subscription benefit is shared. Most PS4 and PS5 online multiplayer requires Plus, with some game-specific exceptions. Details are on PlayStation Plus support.
- Share Play: An invited online friend can watch or participate without owning the game. This is a way to play together, not a transfer of the other player’s purchase.
Which format is more convenient?
There is no universal winner in the cited guidance: Sony documents the requirements and account features, not which experience every player will find easier. A disc avoids the need to buy and download through the Store at the outset, but requires a compatible drive and handling the disc. Digital avoids disc handling but depends on account access and having the download ready. Your console setup, network and storage circumstances, and preference for physical media determine the better fit.
