On Nintendo Switch 2, the basic controls reported for The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival are Y for a melee combo, X for a slower heavy attack, B to dodge or run, and A to loot. Ranged weapons use ZL to aim and ZR to fire, while healing uses the left or right D-pad direction. These mappings come from a Switch 2 review, not a developer control manual; the available information does not confirm which accessibility or button-remapping options are in the Switch 2 version.

What are the controls for The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival on Switch 2?

The following mappings were reported by EdEN’s Switch 2 review, published September 18, 2026. They are useful as a quick reference, but may not establish every option or behavior in every game build.

Action Switch 2 input How it works
Move Left stick Moves your character.
Move camera / change ranged target Right stick Moves the camera when needed; while using ranged weapons, changes the target.
Melee combo Y Performs the standard melee attack sequence.
Heavy attack X A slower, more damaging attack that can break enemy armor.
Dodge / run / vault B Press B to roll; hold it to run. Rolling or running near certain obstacles can vault them.
Loot Hold A near loot Collects ranged weapons or ammunition. Looting a weapon you already carry gives ammunition instead.
Aim / shoot ZL / ZR Hold or press ZL to aim and press ZR to fire, if the selected weapon has ammunition.
Switch ranged weapon D-pad up / down Changes the selected ranged weapon.
Melee weapon attack R Attacks with your melee weapon.
Use healing item D-pad left / right Uses a healing item; keep holding the chosen direction through the action for the maximum medkit recovery reported by the reviewer.
Crouch Press left stick Reduces noise around enemies and supports sneaking, according to the review.
Adrenaline attack L Available after the meter fills and the ability is unlocked through progression.

How do melee combat and ranged attacks work?

Use the right attack for the enemy

Y is the regular melee combo; X is slower but deals more damage and can break armor. Against an armored opponent, the heavy attack can help open the fight, while the quicker combo is the standard close-range option. R is the separate melee-weapon attack input.

Aim, manage ammunition, and choose targets

Hold or press ZL to aim, then use ZR to fire. Shooting depends on having ammunition, so ranged attacks are a limited resource rather than an always-available alternative to melee. Use the right stick to switch ranged targets and the D-pad up or down to change ranged weapons.

#1 Best Overall
The Walking Dead Destinies/Nintendo Switch
  • Shatter Fate: Alter the story of AMC’s The Walking Dead by weaving your own path through the series’ events. Save the villain, kill the hero… and live with the consequences.
  • Slash, Bash, and Shoot the Undead: Slay hordes of walkers in third-person action with a variety of melee and ranged weapons, including bats, katanas, revolvers, shotguns, and crossbows.
  • Build Your Dream Team: Assemble your roster from over twelve iconic characters from AMC’s The Walking Dead, including Rick, Shane, Michonne, Carol, Daryl, and more.
  • Survive the Apocalypse: Manage limited resources, scavenge for weapons and ammo, and maximize your party’s abilities to stay alive.
  • Experience the Tension: Defend your camp, rescue survivors, and fight through stealth and all-out combat. Get one last chance at survival in a “broken state” before the zombie threat overwhelms you.

The game is an arcade-style, side-scrolling beat ’em up with walker swarms, human enemies, bosses, and character-specific fighting styles. The Xbox Store describes Rick, Daryl, Michonne, and unlockable Negan, with signature weapons including Rick’s magnum, Daryl’s crossbow, Michonne’s katana, and Negan’s Lucille. The developer’s design framing, as summarized by Xbox Wire, emphasizes positioning and resource management; that makes it sensible to save ammunition for targets or moments where ranged attacks are most useful.

Handle bosses by finding an opening

The Switch 2 reviewer advises watching boss attack patterns and striking when an opening appears. A heavy attack may help against armor, but it is slower, so timing matters when an enemy can punish an exposed player.

The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival Deluxe Edition - Nintendo Switch
  • Hard-Hitting Arcade Beat ’Em Up Combat - Use brutal melee abilities, crowd-clearing ranged attacks, or a mix of the two in fast-paced skirmishes. Enjoy responsive, crisp, and satisfying fighting gameplay while exploring the apocalypse.
  • Face Iconic Bosses - Take on powerful, fan-favorite walkers like Winslow, the Well Walker, and more. The Saviors provide their own challenges as you throw down with Negan and Simon in intense, multi-phase boss battles that test your skill, strategy, and survival instincts.
  • Replayable Arcade Challenge - Master each character’s move set and tackle multiple difficulty levels in an experience built for repeat runs and escalating challenges. Or jump in with an optional Easy Mode for casual play.

How do you heal without taking unnecessary damage?

Press left or right on the D-pad to use a healing item. The review says to keep holding the selected direction through the healing action to receive the maximum medkit recovery. The character is vulnerable during the recovery animation, so healing in the middle of an enemy attack can leave you exposed. If you can, create distance or wait for a safer opening before committing to the heal.

Can you change the difficulty?

The Switch 2 review reports three choices: Easy, Normal, and Hard. It presents Easy as a reasonable fit for players less experienced with beat ’em ups, Normal as the baseline, and Hard as a substantially greater challenge. The Xbox Store also describes multiple difficulty levels and an optional Easy Mode. These are difficulty choices, not evidence of a broader suite of accessibility settings.

How does progression improve combat?

According to the review, completing the game’s progression earns knowledge points and character-specific materials used to unlock skill-tree nodes. These nodes can add abilities, improve stats, or upgrade existing capabilities.

  • Survivability and recovery: reported upgrades include medkit capacity.
  • Movement: reported upgrades include roll cooldown.
  • Scavenging and ranged combat: reported upgrades include loot and ranged-weapon range.
  • Special attacks: the charged Adrenaline attack is among the abilities that can be unlocked.

Does the Switch 2 version have accessibility settings?

Confirmed Switch 2 information is limited. The review establishes Easy, Normal, and Hard difficulty choices, but does not document the Switch 2 version’s subtitle, audio, or input-accessibility menus. Check the in-game options on your own build for sound, subtitle, and input settings; do not assume an option is present unless it appears there or is documented for Switch 2.

The Steam store listing separately reports adjustable difficulty, custom volume controls, keyboard-only input, subtitles, and full controller support for the PC storefront. Those PC listings do not confirm the same features on Switch 2. A Trailmark Games Steam Community FAQ says the game is best played with a controller and that the team was monitoring feedback about rebinding keys and actions. That time-specific Steam statement does not establish that Switch 2 button remapping is available or that it was later added.

The ESRB rates the Deluxe Edition M for Mature 17+ for Blood and Gore, Strong Language, and Violence, and lists Nintendo Switch 2 among the platforms. Its content description notes frequent blood and gore, some decapitations, disembowelment and dismemberment in boss encounters, and areas with exposed entrails. The rating page describes side-scrolling combat with melee weapons such as bats, knives, and swords, as well as firearms including pistols, crossbows, and shotguns.
