- Which game or application shows the error?
- Does it happen when launching the program, loading a level, opening a project, or installing an update?
- Did the problem begin after an update, mod installation, antivirus alert, disk cleanup, or moving the program?
- Is the affected application 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Is
physx3cooking_x64.dllactually present in the game or application folder? - Are other PhysX files missing from the same directory?
The _x64 suffix means this particular DLL is intended for a 64-bit application. A 32-bit program normally needs the corresponding x86 PhysX files instead. Do not replace an x64 file with an x86 file simply because the filenames look similar.

What is physx3cooking_x64.dll?
PhysX3Cooking_x64.dll is the 64-bit PhysX 3 “cooking” library. PhysX cooking converts triangle and convex mesh data into a form that the PhysX engine can use for collision detection.

It is application software, not a normal Windows component. Games and applications commonly place it beside their own executable or inside a bundled PhysX directory. Related files can include:
PhysX3_x64.dllPhysX3Common_x64.dllPxFoundation_x64.dll- Other PhysX or APEX libraries
The file has appeared in Unreal Engine-based game directories, iClone-related installations, and games that use PhysX. Different products can contain different PhysX builds, so there is no single universal replacement file that is safe for every installation.
File metadata commonly identifies the code as part of NVIDIA PhysX, although the publisher field in Windows Properties may be missing or incomplete. That does not turn the file into a Windows DLL.

A message saying that the DLL is “not designed to run on Windows” can indicate corruption, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a missing dependency. It does not automatically prove that Windows itself is damaged.
Fix 1: Verify the game files in its launcher
For a game, file verification is the safest and fastest repair. It restores missing or altered files from the game’s own manifest and normally preserves your saves.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish.
- Restart Steam and launch the game from the Library.
Steam may report that some files were reacquired. That is expected when a DLL was deleted, damaged, or changed by a mod or antivirus program.
If the game launches afterward, the problem was in the installed game files. If Steam completes verification without replacing anything, continue with the dependency and security checks below.
Epic Games Launcher
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the affected game.
- Select the three dots beside its name.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Launch the game from Epic Games Launcher.
Epic may not display every individual file that it checks. The important result is whether the game starts after verification.
Other launchers
Look for an option named Verify, Repair, Scan and repair, Validate, or Manage installation. Use the launcher’s own repair process rather than replacing one DLL manually.
Some launchers also include a bundled installer under a directory such as:
_CommonRedist
Redist
Redist\PhysX
Support
Installers
If the game includes a PhysX installer in one of those directories, run the installer supplied with that game. The bundled version is more likely to match the executable than a generic download.
Standalone applications
For an application downloaded from a vendor:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three dots or the application entry.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
If there is no Repair option, use the application’s own installer or uninstall and reinstall it from the vendor’s official source. Back up projects, profiles, add-ons, and license information first.
A successful repair restores the complete PhysX set, not just physx3cooking_x64.dll.
Fix 2: Reinstall the affected program
Reinstalling is the definitive repair when verification cannot restore the file or the installation itself is incomplete.
Before uninstalling, check whether the game stores saves outside the cloud. Also record any custom launch options, mods, controller profiles, and installed add-ons.
Then:
- Uninstall the game or application through its launcher or through Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove only the remaining installation folder if the official uninstaller leaves damaged files behind.
- Reinstall from Steam, Epic, the application vendor, or the original official installer.
- Launch it once before adding mods or overlays.
- Confirm that the program creates its PhysX files in its own installation directory.
Do not copy the DLL from another game, another computer, or a different release of the same game. PhysX files can depend on one another and can expose different functions between releases.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove a legitimate game DLL, especially after a game update or a modified installation. A malware warning must not be dismissed automatically, however.
Check Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving the affected game directory or PhysX DLL.
- Expand the entry and inspect the detected path and action.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of these conditions make sense:
- The game or application came from an official source.
- The file is located in that program’s normal installation folder.
- The launcher identifies the file as part of the installed program.
- The detection does not indicate behavior that is clearly unrelated to a game DLL.
Microsoft explains how to review and restore quarantined items in Protection History.
After restoring the item, immediately run Steam or Epic verification, or reinstall the application. The launcher should provide a clean copy. If Windows Security quarantines the restored file again, do not repeatedly restore it. Update security definitions, scan the entire installation, and contact the game vendor if the detection appears incorrect.
Protection History is not permanent, so check it soon after the failure.
Fix 4: Confirm that the file is in the correct folder
A valid DLL can still fail if the program cannot find it or if it was placed beside the wrong executable.
Find the game or application shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Target field.
- Select Open File Location.
- Search that directory for
PhysX3Cooking_x64.dll.
Also inspect folders named Engine, Binaries, Win64, ThirdParty, PhysX3, or Redist. Unreal Engine-based programs may store PhysX libraries in a third-party engine directory rather than beside the visible launcher.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not move the file to C:\Windows\System32 or C:\Windows\SysWOW64. NVIDIA distributes PhysX 3 libraries as application-local code, and placing one in a Windows system directory can create version conflicts and unsafe DLL search behavior.
If the file is in a temporary folder, a user profile download directory, or an unrelated game folder, remove that copy from consideration and repair the original installation.
Fix 5: Check whether the error names a dependency
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named DLL itself is absent. Windows can display that message when a dependency required by the named DLL is missing.
For this PhysX file, inspect whether the same directory contains the related libraries, especially:
PhysX3_x64.dllPhysX3Common_x64.dllPxFoundation_x64.dll
A missing Microsoft runtime can also prevent a PhysX DLL from loading. If the error mentions files such as MSVCP140.dll or VCRUNTIME140.dll, install the appropriate package from Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable page.
Install the architecture required by the application:
- A 64-bit game usually needs the x64 runtime.
- A 32-bit game usually needs the x86 runtime, even on 64-bit Windows.
- Some applications need both because they include separate 32-bit and 64-bit components.
Restart Windows after installing the runtime and launch the program from its normal launcher.
Microsoft documents how Windows searches for DLLs and their dependencies in its DLL search order documentation.

Fix 6: Install or repair NVIDIA PhysX System Software when appropriate
NVIDIA PhysX System Software can help older games that depend on a machine-wide PhysX runtime. It is less likely to repair a modern game’s private copy of PhysX3Cooking_x64.dll, because many games bundle their own PhysX files.
Use the official NVIDIA PhysX System Software package when:
- The affected game is older.
- The game documentation or installer explicitly requests PhysX.
- The game includes a PhysX installer in its
Redistor_CommonRedistfolder. - Several PhysX-dependent games fail after a clean Windows installation.
The current official standalone package is NVIDIA PhysX System Software 9.26.0703. Some older applications may require an older or legacy package instead.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Install it this way:
- Download the installer from NVIDIA’s official support site or run the copy included with the game.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Accept the license terms.
- Choose the repair or install option offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected game through its normal launcher.
Do not assume this package installs every application-bundled version of PhysX3Cooking_x64.dll. If the game’s own verification or reinstall process does not restore the file, the game installer remains the correct source.
The PhysX SDK developer packages are also not generic end-user DLL replacements. They are intended for software development and do not guarantee compatibility with a released game.
Fix 7: Run the game with the correct permissions
Permissions are not the usual cause of this error, but they can matter after moving a game between drives, restoring a backup, or changing folder ownership.
First, launch the game normally through Steam, Epic, or its vendor launcher. Some games set the working directory and environment variables during launcher startup.

Also check folder access:
- Right-click the game’s installation folder.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Security tab.
- Confirm that your Windows account has permission to read and execute files.
- Select Advanced if permissions appear inherited incorrectly.
Avoid installing games into unusual temporary or synchronized folders while troubleshooting. A normal library location with stable read access is easier to verify.
Fix 8: Remove the effect of mods, overlays, and unofficial patches
A mod can replace or delete only part of a PhysX set. Overlays and unofficial patches can also change how a game starts.
Temporarily disable:
- Mods and mod managers
- ReShade or graphics injectors
- Unofficial patches
- Overlay software
- Custom launch parameters
- DLL replacements copied from mod packages
Then verify the game files again and launch it without modifications.
If the clean installation works, restore modifications one at a time. The last item added before the error returns is the likely conflict. Keep the game’s original PhysX files intact unless the mod’s vendor explicitly documents a compatible replacement.
Fix 9: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They do not normally recreate a missing game-owned PhysX DLL, so use them after repairing the application rather than instead of repairing it.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Do not close the window until SFC reaches 100 percent.
Restart Windows and test the affected program.
Possible SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows system files were not detected as damaged.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, install pending updates, restart, and run SFC again.
Microsoft’s recommended procedure is described in its System File Checker and DISM guidance.

After restarting, run the game launcher’s verification process again.
Fix 11: Update or reinstall graphics drivers only when the timing supports it
A driver change is relevant when the failure began immediately after installing a display driver, changing graphics hardware, or restoring an older system image. It is not the primary repair for a missing application-local PhysX DLL.
Update through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Install the offered driver.
- Restart Windows.
Device Manager may report that the best driver is already installed. That does not always mean the newest driver is available, so use the graphics hardware manufacturer’s official support page when a clean reinstall is justified.
Reinstall the display driver
Use the official installer for your graphics adapter:
- Download the driver matching your GPU and Windows architecture.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Choose Custom or Advanced installation when available.
- Select the clean-install option if offered.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Verify the game files again.
Do not remove unrelated devices in Device Manager. The relevant category is normally Display adapters, not System devices or random entries named PhysX.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. PhysX3Cooking_x64.dll is a runtime library used through PhysX APIs, not a COM component that should be registered in the Windows registry.
Do not run:
regsvr32 physx3cooking_x64.dll
It will not repair a missing dependency, restore the correct PhysX version, or make a 64-bit game load an incompatible DLL. The correct action is to restore the complete application package through its launcher or official installer.
Do not copy the file into System32
Copying physx3cooking_x64.dll into C:\Windows\System32 is a common repair-shop mistake.

- A dependency is still missing.
- The game loads files from its own directory.
- The copied DLL has incompatible exports.
- A system-directory copy affects other programs.
- The file may have come from an untrusted source.
C:\Windows\SysWOW64 is also not the correct destination for an x64 game DLL. Despite its confusing name, that directory is associated with 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows.
Keep the PhysX files in the directory supplied by the game or application.
Why random DLL download sites are risky
Downloading one DLL from a random website is not a reliable repair. The file may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to a different PhysX release, or be missing the other libraries that the application requires.

- The affected game’s Steam, Epic, or other official launcher
- The application vendor’s official installer
- The official NVIDIA PhysX System Software package when the application requires it
- Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable packages when the error identifies an MSVC runtime
If you already downloaded a replacement DLL, do not run it or copy it into a system directory. Delete it, run a security scan, and repair the application through its official source.
Check a suspicious or manually restored copy
If physx3cooking_x64.dll exists but you are unsure whether it is trustworthy, inspect it in PowerShell.
Open Start, search for PowerShell, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Replace the example path with the actual application path:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:\path\PhysX3Cooking_x64.dll"
Then calculate its hash:
Get-FileHash "C:\path\PhysX3Cooking_x64.dll" -Algorithm SHA256
A signature result that is missing, invalid, or inconsistent with a file restored by the official launcher deserves caution. A hash is useful for comparison with the same file from the vendor or launcher, but there is no single universal hash for every PhysX 3.x application build.

Do not assume that a file is safe merely because its filename is correct.
What to do if the file exists but the error remains
If the DLL is present and the same error continues:
- Confirm that the executable is 64-bit.
- Check for
PhysX3Common_x64.dlland the other adjacent PhysX files. - Run the launcher’s verification process.
- Check whether the error names a missing Microsoft runtime.
- Temporarily disable mods and overlays.
- Start the program through its launcher instead of double-clicking the executable.
- Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Inspect the full dependency chain with a reputable dependency-analysis tool.
- Contact the application vendor with the collected details.
A present DLL does not prove that it is loadable. Windows may be reporting a dependency failure, an incompatible architecture, damaged exports, or a file that the account cannot read.
What to collect before contacting support
Provide the vendor with:
- The complete error text
- The affected game or application name
- The executable name and full path
- The application version
- Your Windows version and architecture
- The full directory containing the PhysX files
- Whether the DLL was present before and after verification
- File Properties details and Digital Signatures information
- Any Windows Security Protection History entry
- The names of other missing files
- Whether the problem began after an update, mod, driver installation, or antivirus action
- Relevant application or launcher logs
Do not send only a screenshot of the missing-DLL message. The executable path and surrounding PhysX files usually tell support whether the problem is a damaged installation, a dependency, or a security action.

Frequently asked questions
Is physx3cooking_x64.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an application-distributed NVIDIA PhysX 3.x library. It normally belongs in the game or application directory, not in System32 or SysWOW64.
Is it a DirectX or Visual C++ file?
No. It is a PhysX library. Visual C++ may still be a required dependency for a particular application build, so install the Microsoft Visual C++ package only when the error or dependency inspection indicates that it is missing.
Does installing NVIDIA PhysX System Software always fix the error?
No. It can help older games that use the machine-wide PhysX runtime, but many games bundle their own PhysX files. For those programs, launcher verification or reinstalling the affected application is the correct repair.
Why does the filename end in _x64?
The suffix identifies a 64-bit build. A 32-bit application usually needs an x86 PhysX build. Architecture must match the executable and its related libraries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I use a DLL from another game?
You should not. Different games can use different PhysX 3.x builds, and mixing files can produce incompatible exports or new dependency errors.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
No. This is not a COM registration DLL. regsvr32 does not repair PhysX runtime loading.
What if Windows says “the specified module could not be found” even though the file exists?
The message may refer to a dependency of physx3cooking_x64.dll. Check the other PhysX libraries and any Microsoft runtime named by the error or dependency analysis.
Can SFC restore this DLL?
Normally, no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It does not normally restore a missing game-owned PhysX library.
Should I run DISM first or SFC first?
Run DISM first, then run sfc /scannow:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
These commands are secondary checks when the application repair has not solved the problem.
What is the safest fix?
Use the affected program’s official launcher to verify or repair its files. If that fails, reinstall the program and its bundled redistributables. This restores the matching PhysX files together instead of guessing which individual DLL version is required.
