Roblox ID verification is legitimate, but it is not risk-free. Roblox uses Persona, an established identity-verification provider, to process a government-issued ID and a live selfie. That makes an official Roblox verification prompt substantially different from a scam link—but you are still sharing highly sensitive identity and facial information with a third party.
For someone who needs chat or an age-restricted feature, verification may be a reasonable privacy trade-off if it is completed through the official Roblox flow. If the feature is optional, declining is the lower-risk choice. Roblox says Persona-held verification data is generally deleted within 30 days, subject to legal exceptions, while its biometric privacy notice says Roblox may access stored ID photos and selfies for training, product improvement, and compliance.

The short verdict
Roblox ID verification appears to be a real, technically serious age-assurance process—not an obvious scam. However, “trustworthy” depends on how comfortable you are with government-ID and facial-data processing.

- Privacy-sensitive: The process involves an ID photograph, a live selfie, facial analysis and date-of-birth information.
- Not a safety guarantee: Age checks can place users in age groups, but they cannot prove that another player is honest, safe or well-intentioned.
- Optional in many situations: You do not need to submit an ID merely to play Roblox generally; the requirement is connected to particular communication or age-restricted features.
The practical answer is simple: verify only when you genuinely need the feature, and only through an authenticated Roblox app or website flow.

What Roblox ID verification actually does
According to Roblox’s support documentation, the ID-verification process requires:
- A valid, non-expired government-issued ID.
- Photos of the front and back of that ID.
- A live selfie; a saved or static image is not accepted.
Persona’s systems compare the submitted information and selfie, check the date of birth and perform identity or fraud checks. Roblox says it does not receive the face geometry processed by Persona, but its separate biometric and facial-media privacy notice says Roblox may access the stored ID photo and selfie for training, product-improvement and compliance purposes.
That distinction matters. “Roblox does not receive your facial geometry” does not mean that no Roblox-related party can access the uploaded images.
ID verification versus facial age estimation
Roblox also describes a separate facial age-estimation process. The two systems should not be treated as interchangeable.

The “deleted immediately” statement applies to Roblox’s description of facial age estimation. It should not be used to describe ID verification, which involves a separate retention statement and different data.
Roblox announced age-check requirements for communication features in selected markets in December 2025 and broader availability in chat-enabled regions in early January 2026. Its 2025 annual filing says age checks can use facial age estimation, identity verification or parent- or caregiver-provided age information, depending on the applicable system and location.

What data is involved?
The relevant information can include:
- A photograph of your government ID.
- A live selfie.
- The date of birth printed on the ID.
- Face geometry extracted during facial analysis.
- An estimated age or age-assurance result.
- Information used for identity, fraud and account-security checks.
Roblox defines face geometry and similar face scans as biometric data. By using the process, users consent to the collection, use, sharing and retention described in the applicable privacy notice.
How Roblox describes access
Roblox’s materials contain two statements that need to be read together:
- Its ID-verification support page says Roblox does not receive raw identification information uploaded to Persona.
- Its biometric notice says Roblox may access the stored ID photo and selfie for training, product improvement and compliance.
These statements do not support the broader claim that “Roblox never sees your ID.” The safer interpretation is that Persona performs the verification and processes the biometric face geometry, while Roblox may still have access to certain stored images or related information for the purposes described in its notice.
How long is the information retained?
Roblox’s Roblox-specific documentation says information uploaded to Persona is retained for 30 days and then removed. Its biometric notice says Persona deletes biometric data within 30 days after collection, unless a longer period is required by law, such as through a warrant or subpoena.
That is a meaningful stated deletion period, but it is not an unconditional promise that every related record disappears exactly 30 days later. In particular:
- Legal-retention exceptions may apply.
- The resulting age-assurance status or related account-security information may remain after source images are deleted.
- Persona’s general documentation says retention can depend on the organization’s configuration and legal requirements.
- There is no public basis to claim that every user’s session is independently verified to have been deleted on precisely the 30-day mark.
For Roblox users, the Roblox-specific notice is the most relevant policy. Still, privacy-conscious users should not interpret “30 days” as an absolute deletion guarantee covering every associated record.

Is Persona a trustworthy company?
Persona is an established commercial identity-verification provider rather than an unknown website created for a single Roblox scam. Persona says its security program includes encryption in transit and at rest, role-based access controls, monitored infrastructure, vulnerability scanning, penetration testing and deletion or redaction controls. It lists SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 credentials.
Persona’s privacy statement says it does not sell or broker personal data processed for verification, does not use it outside the purposes described in its policy and does not use personal data to train AI models. Persona also announced that Trail of Bits conducted an independent code review of its data practices; that review was commissioned and described by Persona, so it should be treated as a positive signal rather than proof that every aspect of the service is risk-free.
These controls reduce uncertainty, but they cannot guarantee:

- That deletion will occur without exceptions.
- That every Roblox configuration uses identical retention settings.
- That a vendor’s security certifications prove the process is appropriate for every family.
What can go wrong?

Does verification make Roblox safer?
It can reduce some age-related risks. Roblox says its age-checking system is intended to support age-based chat groups, access to age-appropriate content and restrictions on communication between minors and adults. The announced age groups include under 9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20 and 21 and older, with stated exceptions for Trusted Connections.
But age assurance is only one layer of safety. It does not prove that:
- The person behind an account is safe or honest.
- An account is not shared or controlled by someone else.
- A user will not manipulate, harass or exploit another player.
- Moderation will detect every harmful interaction.
- Age estimation works equally well in every lighting condition, camera setup or demographic group.
- Age-separated chat prevents all contact between minors and adults.
Parents should view verification as a risk-reduction mechanism, not as a substitute for supervision and Roblox’s privacy, communication, blocking, reporting and parental-control settings.

Should a child, teenager or adult complete it?
For children
A child does not need to upload an ID simply to play Roblox. If the child does not need chat or a particular age-gated experience, declining verification avoids unnecessary processing of identity and facial data. Parents should first ask what feature the child is trying to unlock and whether it is worth the trade-off.

Teens should involve a parent or guardian where appropriate and understand that verification does not make online contacts trustworthy. If the feature is optional, waiting or declining is reasonable. If it is important, use only the official account flow and read the privacy notices first.
For adults
An adult who wants chat or an age-restricted feature may reasonably choose verification if they accept temporary third-party processing of an ID and selfie. The decision is less about whether Persona is a “scam” and more about whether the feature is worth sharing sensitive information.
For privacy-sensitive families
Declining is a defensible choice, particularly if you object to biometric processing, do not want Roblox potentially accessing uploaded images for the purposes listed in its notice, or want to avoid legal-retention exceptions. Where available, consider facial age estimation instead of ID verification, but remember that it also involves facial analysis and has its own accuracy and privacy questions.
How to tell whether a verification request is genuine
Use the verification interface reached from the official Roblox app, the official Roblox website or an authenticated Roblox account flow. Roblox’s support page describes a smartphone-based process involving ID photographs and a live selfie.

Do not upload an ID if:
- A person sends the request through Roblox chat, Discord, email or social media.
- Someone claiming to be Roblox staff asks you to send an ID image directly.
- The URL is unrelated to Roblox or the official Persona verification interface.
- The page asks for your password, Robux, gift cards, cryptocurrency or an account-recovery code.
- You are asked to install an unknown application, extension or file.
- The domain is misspelled or the message creates pressure and urgency.
Never send a government ID to another player, creator, moderator or alleged administrator. If a request is genuine, you should be able to reach the process through your own authenticated Roblox account.

If verification fails
Roblox says verification may fail when the document is illegible or expired, the live selfie is not completed or the submitted information cannot be validated. Try this sequence:
- Use a valid, non-expired government ID.
- Photograph both sides clearly.
- Use bright, even lighting and avoid glare.
- Follow the live-selfie instructions rather than submitting a saved image.
- Keep your face unobstructed.
- Restart from the official Roblox account flow.
- If the link expired or stopped working, contact Roblox Support for a new link.
Do not “fix” a failed verification by sending your documents to someone who offers help in chat or on social media.
A practical decision checklist
Complete ID verification only if you can answer “yes” to the questions that matter:

- Did I reach the request through Roblox’s official app or website?
- Am I comfortable with Persona processing my ID and live selfie?
- Have I read Roblox’s biometric privacy notice?
- Do I understand that the stated 30-day deletion period has legal exceptions?
- Do I understand that age verification does not prove another user is safe?
If the answer to the first question is no, declining is usually the clearest choice. You can continue playing Roblox without submitting an ID, although some communication or age-restricted features may remain unavailable.
Final assessment
Roblox ID verification is more credible than an unsolicited request to upload an identity document: it is a documented Roblox feature using a named provider with conventional enterprise security controls. But legitimacy is not the same as complete privacy or zero risk.
Roblox says Persona-held verification data is generally deleted within 30 days, subject to legal exceptions. Roblox also says it does not receive Persona’s processed face geometry while reserving access to stored ID photos and selfies for training, product improvement and compliance. Those qualifications are important.
If you need a feature and accept that trade-off, completing verification through the official Roblox flow may be reasonable. If you do not need the feature—or if biometric processing makes you uncomfortable—declining is the lower-privacy-risk decision.
