If Windows says “The program can’t start because pixmpn.dll is missing from your computer,” “pixmpn.dll was not found,” or “Error loading pixmpn.dll,” the application that needs it cannot start. pixmpn.dll is a third-party 32-bit imaging library, so the reliable fix is to repair or reinstall the scanner, document-capture, or imaging software that installed it.

The safest repair path is:
- Identify the application that shows the error.
- Repair that application from Windows or Control Panel.
- If repair is unavailable, reinstall its complete scanner driver, capture runtime, or imaging package.
- Check Windows Security in case the file was quarantined.
- Investigate missing dependencies or 32-bit compatibility.
- Run DISM and SFC only if Windows itself also appears damaged.
pixmpn.dll is not a normal Windows component and is not a standard Visual C++ Redistributable file.

What pixmpn.dll is
The file’s embedded product name is PIXMPDLL, with the description “Multi-page Image Library.” Its historical metadata identifies Pixel Translations technology and a Win32, or 32-bit, imaging component.
PixTools was used in document scanning and image-processing software, particularly applications built around ISIS scanner drivers. Ownership and distribution changed over time, which explains why different installations may show Pixel Translations, EMC, Kodak, Captiva, or related publisher information. Those names do not prove that every copy came from the same product.
A copy in either of these folders does not automatically make it a Microsoft file:

On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. Older installers sometimes placed application DLLs in system directories anyway. The folder path is therefore not enough to identify the owner or prove that the file is safe.

The exact application cannot be identified from the DLL name alone. Start with the program that displays the error, the scanner software you recently changed, or the executable named in the message.
Fix 1: Repair the application that shows the error
This is the most likely solution.
Windows 11
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the scanner utility, document-capture program, imaging application, or older driver package.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
The repair should preserve the application’s settings while restoring missing files. Start the program again after it finishes.
If there is no Repair button, select Reset only if you are prepared to lose the application’s local settings. For scanner software, reinstalling is usually safer than resetting because device profiles and capture components may be stored separately.

Windows 10 or traditional desktop software
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find the scanner, capture, or imaging program.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts and restart Windows.
If the program does not appear, locate its original installer through your organization’s software portal, installation media, or the scanner manufacturer’s support package. Reinstall the complete application rather than replacing only pixmpn.dll.
A successful repair normally means the program starts without the DLL message and the scanner remains available inside the application. If the same message returns, continue with a full reinstall.
Fix 2: Reinstall the scanner or capture package
For this file, reinstalling the parent package is more useful than installing a runtime at random.
- Disconnect the scanner if the vendor’s instructions require it.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the scanner utility, ISIS driver, capture runtime, or imaging program named in the error.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the complete package from the scanner vendor, your company’s approved software portal, or the product’s original installation media.
- Reconnect the scanner only when the installer requests it.
- Launch the capture or scanning application and test a preview or scan.
Some capture products require a separate runtime in addition to the scanner driver. If your organization uses Captiva, PixTools, OpenText, or another document-capture platform, use the exact runtime version supplied for that product. Do not substitute a similarly named package from another scanner.

If the installer offers Repair, Modify, or Complete, choose the option that restores the full imaging and scanning components. A basic driver-only installation may leave the application without the library it expects.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove a damaged, altered, or suspicious copy of a DLL. Reinstalling the parent application is still the safest way to restore it.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
pixmpn.dllor the scanner application. - Expand the event and check the file path and detection details.

- The path belongs to the known scanner or capture installation.
- The application is still required.
- The installer came from the vendor or an approved organization source.
- Your IT administrator or security product confirms the detection is a false positive.
If the file was found in a temporary folder, an unknown download directory, or an unfamiliar application folder, do not restore it. Remove the suspicious program and run a full scan instead.

After a quarantine event, reinstalling the original application is preferable because it replaces the DLL and verifies the rest of the package.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit compatibility and dependencies
pixmpn.dll is reported as a 32-bit library. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs the 32-bit version of its libraries and dependencies.
Do not download a 64-bit DLL simply because Windows is 64-bit. Do not assume that a file with the same name from another application is interchangeable.
If the message says “The specified module could not be found,” the named file may exist while one of its dependencies is missing. Repair or reinstall the complete parent application first. If the vendor specifies a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, install the architecture requested by that application from Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
To check whether the application itself is 32-bit:
- Start the affected application.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click the column headings and choose Select columns if needed.
- Check whether the program is identified as a 32-bit process, where Windows displays that information.
The more useful evidence is the application’s own installer and documentation. Reinstall the package intended for your scanner model and Windows architecture rather than mixing files manually.
Fix 5: Update or reinstall the scanner driver
A damaged driver package can prevent the capture application from loading its imaging components.

- Right-click Start.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the scanner.
- Choose Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver and capture software package supplied by the scanner manufacturer.
- Reconnect the scanner and test it.
If the scanner is missing from Device Manager, select Action > Scan for hardware changes. If it appears with a warning icon, open Properties and read the device status before reinstalling.
Finding the correct legacy driver can mean comparing scanner models, operating-system architecture, and ISIS or TWAIN requirements by hand. Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine repair
Do not run:
regsvr32 pixmpn.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point, commonly COM or ActiveX components. pixmpn.dll is identified as an imaging library, not as a self-registering COM component. Registering it is therefore unlikely to restore the scanner application and may produce another error.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register that exact DLL and provides the correct command, path, and architecture. Otherwise, repair the application installer.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC are useful when other Windows files are also failing. They are unlikely to restore a third-party pixmpn.dll.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If both commands complete successfully but the scanner application still reports pixmpn.dll, return to the parent application’s repair or reinstall process.

Fix 8: Check Windows optional features only when the application requires them
Windows Features are not a source for pixmpn.dll, but an older scanning workflow may also depend on a Windows component.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review only the feature named in the scanner or capture vendor’s instructions.
- Select it, choose OK, and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable random legacy features to make a DLL error disappear. If the vendor does not identify a required Windows component, focus on reinstalling the application and its driver.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A replacement from an unofficial DLL site can have the wrong version, wrong architecture, missing dependencies, or altered contents. It can also leave the original application partially installed, so the next update or scan fails again.
Manual copying also creates path conflicts. Windows may load a different copy from the application directory, System32, or SysWOW64, producing confusing version errors.
The safe sources are:
- The scanner manufacturer’s official installer
- The capture software vendor’s installation package
- Your organization’s approved software portal
- Original installation media
- A repair option built into the installed program
FAQ
Is pixmpn.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a protected Microsoft Windows component. It is a third-party imaging library installed with scanner, capture, or document-processing software.
Is pixmpn.dll part of Visual C++?
