Steam user reviews currently favor the original overall, but the sequel’s recent rating is higher than its all-time English rating. The right choice depends on which features you want—not simply which game is newer.
What are the games, and what does each focus on?
Planet Coaster: detailed theme-park building
Released November 17, 2016, Planet Coaster is a single-player park-building and management game from Frontier Developments, with Aspyr also credited on Steam for Mac. Its central appeal is creative control: players build attractions piece by piece, sculpt terrain, manage a park, and share creations through Steam Workshop. Steam describes more than a thousand building components.

Planet Coaster 2: water parks and shared creation
Planet Coaster 2 launched November 6, 2024. Frontier describes it as bringing water-park gameplay alongside attractions, scenery, and creative management. Its Steam listing adds swimming pools, water rides, guest-care mechanics, first-person park visits, and collaborative Sandbox and Franchise modes. It also describes a cross-platform Frontier Workshop. Check the listing or platform support information for how sharing works on the specific platform you use.
What do Steam users think of each game?
Steam’s user-review snapshot on October 8, 2026, favored the original overall. These are Steam user ratings, not critic scores, and the counts and percentages can change.
#1 Best Overall
- 30 vehicles official manufacturer, in 3 categories, UTV, ATV, Rock Bouncer
- 5 types of racing, off-road sprint, off-road track, mountain climbing, obstacle course, closed circuit
- Official manufacturers, equipment and sponsors
- A comprehensive career mode with team and calendar management

| Game | All-time English Steam reviews | Recent Steam reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Planet Coaster | 90% positive from 31,261 English reviews | 84% positive from 122 recent reviews |
| Planet Coaster 2 | 73% positive from 8,314 English reviews | 83% positive from 405 recent reviews |
The snapshot suggests the original has the stronger overall track record on Steam, while the sequel’s recent reviews are more favorable than its all-time English rating. Recent and all-time figures reflect different review samples, so neither should be treated as a fixed score or a direct measure of every player’s experience.
Steam’s Planet Coaster listing also reproduces a 9/10 Gamespot assessment: “A game that occupies your thoughts when you’re not playing it, and it’s thoroughly captivating when you are.” The same listing attributes this assessment to Eurogamer: “If you’ve any interest at all in theme park design, or if you thrill at the idea of being able to realise your every fantastical, architectural whim (even if it’s just putting down a bunch of rocks just so), then you’ll likely adore Planet Coaster.” These excerpts speak to the original’s creative appeal; they do not establish a comparable critic-score consensus for both games.

Which game should you choose?
Choose the original if creative building is your priority
- You want a theme-park sandbox centered on detailed construction, terrain shaping, and park management.
- You prefer a game with a more favorable all-time Steam user-review snapshot.
- You do not need the sequel’s water-park attractions or collaborative modes.
Choose Planet Coaster 2 if water parks or collaboration matter
- You want swimming pools and water rides alongside traditional coaster and theme-park creation.
- You are interested in the sequel’s collaborative Sandbox and Franchise modes or its Frontier Workshop sharing features.
- You want the newer entry’s guest-care mechanics and first-person park visits.
Think about how you will play
The original is listed on Steam as single-player, while the sequel’s listing specifically describes collaborative play in Sandbox and Franchise modes. If shared creation is a deciding factor, verify the exact feature behavior for your platform rather than assuming every platform supports it in the same way.

How should you compare editions and DLC before buying?
Steam lists paid digital DLC for both games, including packs and ride collections for the original and several packs for the sequel. Compare the base game with the available editions and add-ons in your region, and decide whether a particular pack contains something you actually want. Prices, promotions, regional availability, and catalogs can change; check the store listing at purchase time rather than relying on an old price.
