Planet Zoo 2 launched on October 13, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Frontier Developments’ sequel combines detailed zoo management with global conservation projects and expansive, player-built wildlife reserves. Flying birds and fully aquatic species headline the additions, and Frontier says the game includes more than 130 animals.
Release date and platforms
Planet Zoo 2 released on October 13, 2026. Frontier’s Steam announcement listed a 3 p.m. BST launch time that day, equivalent to 14:00 UTC. The game is listed for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; the available information does not establish whether features or performance are identical across platforms.

What’s new in Planet Zoo 2?
Flying birds and aquatic animals
Frontier says the roster contains over 130 animals, including flying birds and fully aquatic species. The Steam listing also describes customizable freshwater and saltwater aquariums. These additions broaden the kinds of habitats players can build beyond the land-animal exhibits familiar from the first game.

Wildlife reserves alongside zoos
The sequel’s conservation projects extend beyond conventional zoo exhibits. Frontier describes projects with specific requirements for releasing animals into customizable wildlife reserves built as living ecosystems. In the Shacknews hands-on feature, Lucas White found the reserves especially striking for their scale and for showing animals outside enclosures. He described moving giraffes from captivity into a much larger space as satisfying.
That is a game feature and a publisher-described conservation theme, not evidence that playing the game produces real-world conservation outcomes.

How the campaign and sandbox play
White’s preview portrays the campaign as a sequence of varied tasks rather than one uninterrupted zoo build. In his session, he drove through a preserve to photograph animals, then worked on a prebuilt zoo: changing paths, setting up an aardvark exhibit and rehoming giraffes. He also saw shoebills, elephants, zebras and hippos.
Players can also start from scratch in sandbox mode. The management tools White encountered included adjusting foliage, shaping and choosing flooring materials, defining visitor boundaries and building barriers. Difficulty settings control how much guidance the interface provides, giving players a way to choose a more supported or less guided experience.

What the hands-on preview found difficult
White’s main frustration was precision. Drawing neat path or flooring edges close to barriers felt awkward with both a mouse and a controller. He noted that imperfect placement did not trigger an in-game penalty, but the fiddly construction could still interrupt the flow of designing a habitat.
That observation comes from one writer’s release-day hands-on session, not a broad comparison of control methods or platforms. It is most useful as a caveat for players who care about exact layout work: the preview found the management systems deep, but fine placement was not always smooth.

Standard and Deluxe editions
The Steam listing identifies a standard edition and a Deluxe Edition. The confirmed Deluxe upgrade adds six animal species and exclusive animal signs. The available edition details do not establish regional prices here; check the storefront where you plan to buy before deciding whether the additional animals and decorative signs justify the upgrade.
