For owners of an earlier Game of the Year edition, the case is less compelling: TechRadar reviewer Roland Moore-Colyer judged those editions to offer nearly as much, while Replanted’s new visuals are a matter of taste. The familiar lane-defense campaign remains the main draw.
What is Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted?
EA describes Replanted as a remaster of the original Plants vs. Zombies, bringing it back with new visuals and modes. It launched on October 23, 2025, according to Steam, and is available for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
EA’s product page frames it as the original game refreshed, while EA Help lists the supported platforms and play options. Steam credits PopCap Games and The Lost Pixels as developers and Electronic Arts as publisher; its listing gives the release date as October 23, 2025.
What’s new in Replanted?
The main addition is a package of modes and extras around the classic defense game. The official Xbox and PlayStation descriptions list these features:
#1 Best Overall
- Experience the original Plants vs. Zombies game fully remastered in stunning HD graphics
- Fend off waves of Zombies in the original lane-based defense mode, now with added bonus levels and new content!
- Team up with a friend in local co-op mode to defend the backyard together, now with 100% more BUTTER!
- Battle head-to-head in local PvP mode by taking control of the Zombies
- Relive classic minigames like Wall-Nut Bowling - now with HD polish and even more chaotic fun!
- Local co-op: Play with another person locally.
- Local PvP: One player can control the zombies against the other player’s plants.
- Cloudy Day: A mode that limits sunlight, changing the resource pressure on each level.
- Rest In Peace: A permadeath option for Adventure mode.
- Bonus levels and minigames: The listed classics include Wall-Nut Bowling.
- Art and concept library: A collection of production-history material.
The storefronts also list visual options for the Tree of Wisdom that can be switched on or off. These features add variety, but they should not be mistaken for a redesigned campaign: the central appeal remains placing plants to defend lanes against waves of zombies.
How does the core game hold up?
In TechRadar’s review, first reviewed in December 2025, Moore-Colyer says the familiar sunlight economy, plant placement, and defensive lines still work. He calls the returning campaign the highlight and praises the series’ creativity, charm, and range of modes. He also notes occasional difficulty spikes.

- Ready the juice cannons and prepare for battle in the wackiest shooter yet
- Tackle hilarious missions and defeat epic bosses to collect medals and unlock outrageous outfits
- PvE Offline: Discover giddy park, PvE free-roam regions and private play modes all without an internet collection
- Rux Coin Store: Earn in-game coins only through play, and spend them to unlock cool items, characters and perks
That assessment comes from his roughly five hours with the game, mostly in Adventure and several minigames, on Steam Deck and desktop PC while updates were arriving. It is a reviewer’s account rather than a platform-wide performance test. He did not try the multiplayer modes, so his review does not establish how co-op or PvP plays in practice.
How does it compare with an earlier GOTY edition?
If you already own a previous Game of the Year edition, weigh the new modes against what you have. Moore-Colyer’s assessment is that earlier GOTY versions offer nearly as much. That is a reviewer’s broad comparison, not a feature-by-feature audit of every edition, so check the contents of your specific copy before deciding.

Replanted’s clearest reasons to buy again are local co-op and PvP, Cloudy Day, Rest In Peace, the bonus content, and its refreshed presentation. If you mainly want to replay the original solo campaign, the review suggests the upgrade is harder to justify. Whether the HD visual changes are a benefit depends on your taste: Moore-Colyer says some choices may look flat to players who prefer the original style.
Which platform should you choose?
EA lists Switch, Switch 2, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. The official feature descriptions establish local multiplayer, but do not establish online multiplayer. Moore-Colyer prefers PC and mouse control; that is his recommendation, not evidence that other versions perform worse.

Were bugs or visual changes a problem?
Moore-Colyer reported bugs and glitches around release, while noting that later patches appeared to address them. That observation reflects the state he encountered during a review period when updates were arriving, not a guarantee about the current build. He also found some visual changes potentially unappealing to purists; whether they suit you is subjective rather than a clear-cut defect.
Should you buy Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted?
Buy it if you are new to the original, want a convenient package of its classic campaign and extra modes, or expect to use local co-op or PvP. If you already own a GOTY edition and mostly want the solo campaign, the reviewer’s comparison makes a second purchase difficult to recommend without a strong interest in the additions. Purists should look at the new presentation before committing, and everyone should check their local storefront for current pricing.
