Short answer: Choose Umami when a small site, documentation portal or solo project mainly needs pageviews and referrers with the smallest practical operating footprint. Choose Plausible when a polished dashboard and conversion reporting—goals, custom events, funnels, user journeys or revenue—matter more than keeping the stack minimal. Plausible also offers managed hosting; Umami is most compelling when you want to keep the analytics database under your control.

Both products are privacy-oriented alternatives to conventional analytics suites and both can be self-hosted. The deciding difference is not whether either can produce a traffic chart. It is how much infrastructure and maintenance you will accept in exchange for deeper reporting, hosted convenience and team features.

At a glance

Decision factor Umami Plausible
Best fit Small sites that need pageviews and referrers with a lighter infrastructure path Sites that want a minimal dashboard plus documented conversion-oriented reporting
Published baseline requirements Node.js 18.18 or newer and PostgreSQL 12.14 or newer, according to the available comparative analysis Docker on an x86_64 server with SSE4.2 support, plus a domain or subdomain that you can edit through DNS
Core reporting emphasis Pageviews and referrers Traffic reporting with goals, custom events and deeper conversion workflows on higher plans
Deployment choices Self-hosted deployment is the main control-oriented use case discussed here Community Edition can be self-hosted; Cloud provides managed infrastructure
Software cost when self-hosted The comparative material does not establish a license price; budget for your server and operating time Community Edition is the free, self-hosted AGPL release; server and operating work remain yours
Who carries operations work The operator carries hosting, updates, backups, security and capacity work Community Edition operators carry installation, maintenance, upgrades, capacity, uptime, backups, security, stability and consistency
Example current provider price An InstaPods offer is reported at a flat $7 per month; this is provider- and date-specific A third-party comparison reports Cloud starting at $9 per month for 10,000 pageviews; this is provider- and date-specific

Those prices are illustrations rather than universal rates. A self-hosted total also includes the server, storage, backups, monitoring and the value of the person responsible when something breaks.

What each product is designed to do

Plausible

Plausible describes itself as “a simple, privacy-friendly alternative to Google Analytics.” Its documentation says it is designed to be self-hosted via Docker. The product’s appeal is a deliberately restrained interface that still supports campaign and conversion analysis as your needs grow. Plausible documentation, accessed in 2026, states that more than 21,000 teams use the product; that is the vendor’s own usage figure, not an independent adoption study.

  • Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons

The important distinction is that Plausible has a clear path from basic traffic statistics to business reporting. Goals and custom events provide the foundation; higher plans add funnels, user journeys, revenue tracking, custom properties, API access and data-export or identity features. You can therefore begin with a small dashboard without committing to a full enterprise analytics suite, then move up when measurement becomes more central to the site.

Umami

Umami is positioned in the comparison available for this decision as the lighter route for pageviews and referrers. That makes it attractive for a personal project or a site where the main questions are “How many people visited?” and “Where did they come from?” rather than “Which sequence of events produced revenue?”

The available comparison lists Node.js 18.18 or newer and PostgreSQL 12.14 or newer as Umami prerequisites. It does not establish Umami’s complete current feature matrix, licensing terms, release numbers or hardware sizing. Treat those details as items to verify against the release you intend to deploy rather than assuming feature parity with Plausible.

Infrastructure and deployment requirements

Plausible Community Edition

Plausible’s documented Community Edition path is Docker-based. The server must use x86_64 architecture and support the SSE4.2 instruction set. You also need a domain or subdomain whose DNS records you can edit. These are hard prerequisites: a low-cost server with an incompatible CPU or no usable DNS control is not a viable Plausible installation target.

  • Container runtime: Docker is the documented deployment model.
  • CPU architecture: x86_64.
  • Instruction support: SSE4.2.
  • Network identity: a domain or subdomain under your DNS control.

The documentation does not turn those prerequisites into a universal CPU, memory or storage recommendation. Size the host for your traffic, retention and backup policy, and leave room for upgrades rather than choosing hardware solely by the minimum architecture label.

Umami runtime and database

The comparative analysis lists Node.js 18.18+ and PostgreSQL 12.14+ for Umami. In practical terms, that is a conventional application-plus-relational-database stack and is presented as lighter than the Plausible arrangement described by the comparison. Confirm the supported versions in the Umami release you select, because runtime and database support can change between releases.

The same comparison characterizes Plausible as using ClickHouse alongside PostgreSQL for its analytics architecture. That additional data-store component helps explain why Plausible can support more involved reporting, but it also means more services to understand, monitor and back up when you run the Community Edition yourself.

Hardware planning

An x86-64 mini PC or server with Docker support is a sensible starting category for a self-hosted installation, provided it meets Plausible’s SSE4.2 requirement if you choose Plausible. Do not treat “mini PC” as a capacity guarantee: pageview volume, retention, concurrent users, database indexes and backup history determine the real load. For Umami, match the host to the Node.js and PostgreSQL versions you will run and verify the release’s own sizing guidance.

If you want to run either analytics stack yourself, an Antihost VPS offers Linux VPS instances with full root access, NVMe storage and 1 to 16 vCPUs, with deployments in the USA (East), the Netherlands and Ukraine.

Reporting depth: traffic versus conversion analysis

When pageviews and referrers are enough

For a brochure site, small blog, documentation portal or solo game project, pageviews and referrers often answer the first-order questions. Umami’s lighter positioning fits that workload: install the tracker, inspect traffic over time and identify the sources sending visitors. If you do not need a carefully designed event taxonomy, extra conversion reports may add operational cost without improving decisions.

When you need goals and custom events

Plausible documents goals and custom events as part of its feature path. Those tools let you measure actions such as a signup, download, outbound click or completed form rather than stopping at visits. Funnels then connect multiple actions into a sequence, while user journeys show how visitors move through the site. Revenue tracking and custom properties extend the model when a project has commercial or product-level reporting needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Feature availability depends on the Plausible plan. Business documentation lists funnels, user journeys, revenue tracking, custom properties, the Stats API and Data Studio. Enterprise adds SSO, the Sites API, a managed proxy and raw-data exports. If you need one of those capabilities, check the current plan definition before choosing; plan limits and packaging are changeable.

Umami feature verification

Do not assume that an Umami release supplies an equivalent for every Plausible capability. The material available for this comparison supports Umami’s pageview and referrer use case but does not independently establish complete parity for goals, funnels, journeys, revenue, team permissions or APIs. List the exact events and reports your team requires, then verify each one in the current Umami documentation and interface before migrating.

Dashboard simplicity and daily workflow

Both products aim to avoid the complexity associated with large, general-purpose analytics suites. The practical difference is where simplicity is spent. Umami’s advantage is a smaller conceptual and infrastructure footprint when your report vocabulary is short. Plausible’s advantage is a polished minimal dashboard that can still expose conversion-oriented reports as your measurement program matures.

For a solo operator, fewer moving parts can outweigh a richer report catalogue. For a product, marketing or publishing team, a shared definition of goals, events and funnels may save more time than a simpler server. Decide based on the questions you will ask every week, not on the number of charts shown in a demo.

Privacy and data ownership

Both tools target privacy-conscious web analytics and can be self-hosted, so you can keep the analytics data on infrastructure you control. Plausible explicitly describes its approach as using no cookies, collecting no personal data and requiring no consent banners for its stated tracking model. Those statements describe Plausible’s product position; your own legal obligations still depend on jurisdiction, implementation and the other data your site collects.

Self-hosting changes who has custody of the database and who is responsible for protecting it. You choose the region, retention period, access controls and backup destination, but you also become the party that must patch the operating system, secure the database, restrict administrative access and prove that a restore works.

What self-hosting really transfers to you

Installation and configuration

You must provision a compatible host, install the required runtime or container stack, configure the database, set DNS and put the analytics endpoint behind appropriate network and access controls. Plausible Community Edition’s Docker model standardizes packaging but does not remove these infrastructure tasks. Umami’s Node.js and PostgreSQL requirements similarly leave you responsible for a reliable application and database environment.

Backups and recovery

A backup is useful only if it can be restored. Define how often the analytics database is copied, where copies are stored, how long they are retained and who can retrieve them. Test a restoration before relying on the data for reporting. If you use a hosted plan, backups may be part of the managed service; with Community Edition or an Umami deployment, assume the responsibility is yours unless your provider contract explicitly says otherwise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security and uptime

Apply operating-system, container, runtime and database updates; limit administrative accounts; use encrypted connections; monitor disk usage; and decide how you will respond to a failed deployment. Analytics is not usually on the critical request path for serving a page, but a neglected instance can still expose visitor data or silently stop collecting it.

Capacity and upgrades

Traffic spikes, longer retention and additional event properties increase storage and query work. Watch ingestion errors, database growth, CPU, memory and disk. Keep a rollback plan for upgrades and take a fresh backup before changing the application or schema. Plausible states that Cloud receives updates multiple times per week, while Community Edition follows a longer release schedule. That difference affects how quickly hosted customers receive fixes and how often self-hosters must plan upgrade work; Umami’s cadence should be checked for the exact release you adopt.

Hosted and self-hosted cost

Self-hosting removes a software subscription in the Plausible Community Edition case, but it does not make analytics free. Your bill can include a virtual or physical server, storage, snapshots, off-site backups, monitoring and email or incident tooling. The largest hidden cost is often operator time: installation, upgrades, security review, troubleshooting and recovery.

Plausible’s hosted plans and team features

Plan Documented positioning
Starter One site and solo use
Growth Multiple sites or sharing with a team or clients
Business Funnels, user journeys, revenue tracking, custom properties, Stats API and Data Studio
Enterprise SSO, Sites API, managed proxy and raw-data exports

All Plausible plans include a 30-day trial without a credit card, according to the plan documentation. Prices, limits and included features are volatile, so treat the table as a capability map rather than a permanent quote.

Which tool fits common scenarios?

Small personal site or documentation portal

Start with Umami if pageviews and referrers are the complete requirement and you are comfortable maintaining Node.js and PostgreSQL. Its lighter path reduces the number of components you need to understand. Plausible Community Edition is reasonable when you prefer its interface and already operate Docker on a compatible x86_64 host.

Conversion-focused product or campaign site

Choose Plausible when goals, custom events, funnels, journeys or revenue are central to decisions and you want those capabilities documented in one product path. Select the plan that contains the features you actually need; do not assume the entry plan includes Business or Enterprise reporting.

Strict data-location requirement

Self-host either product on infrastructure in the required region, then enforce your own access, retention and backup policies. Umami is the practical default when its simpler reporting is sufficient. Plausible Community Edition gives you the same custody benefit while adding its documented infrastructure prerequisites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Team, API or identity requirements

Plausible is the safer starting point when you specifically need the documented Stats API, Data Studio, SSO, Sites API, managed proxy or raw-data exports. For Umami, verify an equivalent in the current release before committing your reporting workflow.

Limited operations time

Use managed hosting if the cost is justified by removing patching, backups, security and uptime work. Plausible Cloud explicitly includes managed infrastructure, backups, security and maintenance. A self-hosted Umami or Plausible instance is appropriate only when someone owns those duties.

A practical evaluation and deployment checklist

  1. Write the questions first. Separate basic traffic questions from conversion, revenue, journey, API and team-access requirements.
  2. Choose the operating model. Decide whether you will pay for managed infrastructure or own the server, backups, upgrades and incidents.
  3. Validate the host. For Plausible, confirm Docker, x86_64, SSE4.2 and DNS control. For Umami, confirm Node.js 18.18+ and PostgreSQL 12.14+ support for the selected release.
  4. Model total cost. Add server, storage, backup and monitoring charges to any subscription or provider offer, then estimate maintenance time.
  5. Define the event vocabulary. Name goals and events before installing tracking so reports remain consistent across pages and releases.
  6. Protect the data. Restrict administrative access, encrypt connections, set retention rules and schedule restorable backups.
  7. Test failure paths. Verify DNS, collection, dashboard queries, disk alerts and a database restore before relying on the numbers.
  8. Review after real traffic arrives. Watch storage growth, query performance, event quality and pageview-based costs, then resize or change plans deliberately.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

Buying incompatible hardware

A server can run Docker yet fail Plausible’s SSE4.2 requirement. Check the processor instruction set before purchase. If you cannot verify it, choose a host whose specifications explicitly confirm x86_64 and SSE4.2.

Confusing software price with operating cost

Free Community Edition software does not cover a VPS, physical electricity, snapshots, backups or your time. Compare complete monthly and annual totals, not just the license line.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating a provider offer as a permanent market price

The reported $7 Umami offer and $9 Plausible Cloud starting figure are snapshots tied to named providers and a particular date. Recheck current limits, billing units, support and backup terms before signing up.

Assuming feature parity

Pageviews and referrers do not prove that two products implement the same goals, funnels, journeys, revenue, API or identity features. Test the exact workflow your team will use and verify the current Umami release.

Skipping restore tests

Analytics data can accumulate for months before anyone notices a backup failure. Perform a controlled restore and document the recovery steps while the system is healthy.

The decision

Umami wins for the narrow, high-control use case: a small site that needs dependable pageview and referrer reporting and values a lighter Node.js/PostgreSQL path. Plausible wins when a particularly simple dashboard must grow into documented conversion analysis, team sharing or advanced API and identity features, or when managed hosting is worth paying for.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither choice eliminates operational trade-offs. Self-hosting gives you custody and avoids a software subscription, but it assigns maintenance, backups, upgrades, security and capacity to you. Hosted Plausible removes much of that work at a changing price. Choose the tool whose reporting depth and operating responsibility match the people, traffic and decisions behind your site.
