Play Original StarCraft Free: Here’s How

Blizzard still offers the original StarCraft and Brood War free. Here is the official Battle.net installation path, direct Windows and Mac fallbacks, and the difference between classic play and paid Remastered features.

Yes—you can currently play the original StarCraft and Brood War without buying StarCraft: Remastered. Install StarCraft through Blizzard’s Battle.net desktop app, then use the classic graphics and game content. You do not need an old CD, DVD, or activation code. You do need a Blizzard/Battle.net account for the current installation process.

The important catch is that Blizzard presents the free classic game and the paid HD upgrade through the same StarCraft client. Remastered is required for enhanced graphics, enhanced audio, and ranked matchmaking—but not for the original campaigns, classic graphics, Brood War, custom games, or traditional LAN play.

What “original StarCraft” means

This guide is about the 1998 real-time strategy game, not StarCraft II.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • StarCraft: the original base game and its campaigns.
  • StarCraft: Brood War: the official expansion, including its additional campaign content and units.
  • StarCraft: Remastered: a paid upgrade to the same classic game, with new visual and audio assets and modernized competitive features.
  • StarCraft II: a separate game. Do not select it if you want the original 1998 release.

Blizzard’s current support guidance still says that StarCraft and Brood War are free to download and do not require a DVD or activation code. Blizzard originally made the classic release free with patch 1.18 in April 2017; this is not merely an expired trial or a limited-time promotion.

What you get for free

The free version is the original, standard-definition experience. It includes the classic game and Brood War rather than the newer HD art supplied by Remastered.

Feature Free classic edition StarCraft: Remastered
Original StarCraft campaigns Yes Yes
Brood War campaigns and content Yes Yes
Original standard-definition graphics Yes Yes
Remastered HD/4K graphics No Yes
Remastered enhanced audio No Yes
Custom multiplayer games Yes Yes
LAN play Yes, subject to the client and local network Yes
Traditional Battle.net lobby play Yes, with classic-mode limitations Yes
Ranked matchmaking and ladder No Yes

Blizzard’s 1.18 release notes also list technical improvements that came with the free classic client, including windowed and fullscreen switching, observer functionality, replay autosaving, popular maps, an in-game timer option, improved Battle.net behavior, and compatibility fixes. These improvements do not turn the free edition into Remastered; they make the classic release easier to run on newer systems.

How to download and install original StarCraft

Blizzard’s supported route is the Battle.net desktop application. The exact labels can move as Blizzard updates the launcher, but the process is normally the following on Windows and Mac.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install Battle.net. Download the desktop application from Blizzard’s official Battle.net page.
  2. Sign in or create an account. Use an existing Blizzard account, or create one through Blizzard’s account-registration page. The current installation route requires an account.
  3. Open the game catalog. In Battle.net, open Games and, if necessary, choose All Games so the full catalog is displayed.
  4. Select StarCraft. Make sure you have not selected StarCraft II. Depending on the launcher version, the listing may be presented as StarCraft or as a StarCraft/Remastered product page.
  5. Choose the free installation option. Click Install, Play for Free, or the equivalent standard StarCraft option shown by your client. Do not enter the Remastered checkout unless you actually want the paid upgrade.
  6. Choose an installation folder. Confirm the location and let Battle.net download and patch the game.
  7. Launch the game. Click Play when installation finishes.
  8. Choose a game mode. Select Single Player for the campaigns or Multiplayer for LAN and classic online options.

The current client can contain both versions. Blizzard forum guidance explains that the classic game and Remastered use the same client, while the Remastered license controls access to the HD assets and premium features. If you have not bought Remastered, the original graphics and classic content remain the free option.

If Battle.net only shows “StarCraft: Remastered”

This is the most confusing part of the current download process. Battle.net may emphasize a paid StarCraft: Remastered store page, show a purchase button, or fail to display an obvious separate listing called “StarCraft Classic.” That does not by itself prove that the original game has been removed or made paid.

Try these steps in order:

  1. Check the title. Confirm that you selected StarCraft, not StarCraft II.
  2. Open All Games. Do not rely only on a promotional tile or the store column. The free installation control may appear on the main StarCraft panel.
  3. Update Battle.net. Allow the launcher to install any pending update.
  4. Restart the launcher. Log out, close Battle.net completely, reopen it, and sign in again.
  5. Look for Install or Play for Free. The wording varies by launcher version and region. The free button may appear separately from the Remastered purchase panel.
  6. Use Blizzard’s direct installer. If the catalog still loops to the store, use one of the official fallback links below.

Blizzard forum instructions specifically recommend updating or restarting Battle.net when the StarCraft installation option is missing. A recent walkthrough also documents the confusing situation in which the store appears to show only the paid edition. Treat those screenshots and labels as interface guidance, not as a permanent description of every Battle.net version.

  • Mechanical Switch Button Tensioning: A metal spring tensioning system and metal pivot hinges are built into left and right computer gaming mouse buttons for a crisp, clean click feel with rapid click feedback

These are useful fallbacks when the Battle.net catalog does not expose the install control. Blizzard can change download endpoints, so if one stops redirecting correctly, return to the official patch-notes page and follow its current links. Avoid random “free StarCraft” ZIP files, torrents, or third-party mirrors when Blizzard provides the installers itself.

Why the Remastered purchase is still shown

StarCraft: Remastered is not a sequel that replaces the free game. It is a paid upgrade built around the original StarCraft and Brood War. Blizzard describes the upgrade as adding 4K UHD graphics, enhanced audio, and modern multiplayer features such as updated matchmaking and leaderboards.

In practical terms:

  • Installing StarCraft is free. This gives you the classic standard-definition client and the original game content.
  • Buying Remastered is optional. It unlocks the remastered visual and audio assets and the paid competitive features.
  • The purchase screen is not the same thing as the installation requirement. If Battle.net directs you to buy the game, you may be viewing the Remastered license rather than the free classic installation control.

Do not assume that owning an old physical copy automatically unlocks Remastered. Blizzard support guidance says that the HD upgrade requires its own license; an old CD key or disc is not needed for the free classic content and does not automatically grant the paid upgrade.

Should you buy Remastered?

For the original story, the free edition is enough. Choose it if you want to replay the Terran, Protoss, and Zerg campaigns, play Brood War, use classic graphics, experiment with custom maps, or simply find out whether the game still suits you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remastered is worth considering if you specifically want:

  • HD or 4K graphical assets while retaining the original gameplay;
  • enhanced audio;
  • ranked matchmaking and ladder play;
  • a more modern competitive multiplayer presentation; or
  • the visual upgrade for a large modern display.

Blizzard’s original launch materials listed Remastered at $14.99, but that is a historical launch price—not a reliable current price. Prices and availability can vary by country and may change, so check the live Blizzard store before making a purchase.

What free multiplayer actually includes

The free edition should not be advertised as a free version of the current ranked competitive experience.

  • Ultra-long battery life gives you up to 250 hours of continuous gaming on a single AA battery
  • Lightweight mechanical design and classic shape for maximum maneuverability, durability and comfort
  • Compact, portable design with convenient built-in storage for included USB wireless receiver
  • Custom games: available in the classic experience, including traditional lobby-based play.
  • LAN: available as a classic feature, provided the local machines and network are configured correctly.
  • Ranked matchmaking and ladder: associated with Remastered, not the free classic license.
  • Playing with Remastered owners: Blizzard forum guidance indicates that free and Remastered users can share custom-game play through the underlying client, but the free player does not gain Remastered graphics or ranked access.

If your main goal is to queue for ranked matches, the free download will not provide that feature. If your goal is a private match, LAN session, custom map, or campaign replay, the free classic edition is the relevant option.

Mac compatibility: an important qualification

Blizzard provides a Mac installer, but that does not guarantee that every current Mac or every current version of macOS will run it perfectly. Blizzard’s published Remastered requirements page lists old baseline operating systems—Windows 7, 8, and 10, with macOS 10.13 minimum and macOS 10.15 recommended—and the page is itself dated. It is therefore not a dependable guarantee for newer macOS releases or every Apple-silicon configuration.

On a Mac, use Blizzard’s official installer or Battle.net client first. If it fails to launch, hangs, or closes unexpectedly, consult Blizzard’s current StarCraft troubleshooting page. Do not conclude from one compatibility failure that the free game has been discontinued.

Linux and unsupported workarounds

Blizzard’s supplied installers cover Windows and Mac. The available first-party materials do not establish current official Linux support, so Linux users should not be promised a supported native installation. Wine, Lutris, virtual machines, and compatibility layers may be community options, but they are not the official download path and can introduce their own configuration and update problems.

Can you play it offline?

The game includes single-player campaigns, but the current official installation route requires Battle.net and a Blizzard account. Do not assume that every modern installation will launch completely offline or without the launcher after setup. Offline behavior can depend on the platform, client version, and account state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If offline access is essential, install and launch the game while signed in first, then consult Blizzard’s current support documentation for the behavior of your platform. The safe promise is that the campaigns are single-player—not that every current Battle.net installation is guaranteed to be launcher-free.

Common problems and fixes

Battle.net keeps showing a purchase button

Make sure you are on the main StarCraft game panel rather than only the Remastered store page. Check Games → All Games, restart the launcher, and look for Install or Play for Free. If the option remains absent, use Blizzard’s official Windows or Mac installer links above.

The game does not appear in the catalog

Update Battle.net, sign out and back in, and reopen the complete game list. Search for StarCraft, not “StarCraft II.” Regional catalog layouts and launcher labels can differ, so the direct installer published by Blizzard is the next safe fallback.

The installer will not start

Confirm that you downloaded the installer for the correct operating system, allow Battle.net to update, and try again after fully closing the launcher. On Mac, check your system version and remember that Blizzard’s public compatibility information is old. For persistent problems, use Blizzard’s support article rather than downloading a replacement installer from an unofficial site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An old CD or activation code is requested

The free release does not normally require either one. You may be looking at an old installation method or a separate account/licensing screen. Use the current Battle.net route instead.

You downloaded a suspicious “free” copy elsewhere

Delete it and use Blizzard’s Battle.net application or official direct installer. Third-party mirrors can contain modified files, malware, outdated patches, or unauthorized copies, and they are unnecessary for this game.

Do I need a CD key, DVD, or original disc?

No. Blizzard says the current free download does not require a DVD or activation code. You do need a Blizzard/Battle.net account for the current Battle.net installation route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need Battle.net to play the original game?

Blizzard’s current supported installation path uses the Battle.net desktop application, and the app requires an account. The game has single-player campaigns, but Blizzard does not guarantee that every current installation will run completely offline or without the launcher.

Is StarCraft II included in the free download?

No. StarCraft II is a different game. Select StarCraft in Battle.net if you want the 1998 original and Brood War.

Can I play the campaigns for free?

Yes. The original StarCraft and Brood War campaign content is included in the free classic edition.

Can I play online for free?

You can use classic custom games and traditional lobby multiplayer without buying Remastered. Ranked matchmaking and ladder play are Remastered features, so the free version is not a free substitute for the paid ranked experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can free and Remastered players play together?

Blizzard forum guidance indicates that free and Remastered users can play together in custom games through the shared underlying client. The free player still does not receive the Remastered graphics, audio upgrade, or ranked features.

Is ranked mode free?

No. Ranked matchmaking and ladder access are associated with StarCraft: Remastered. The free edition is intended for the classic game, campaigns, custom games, and LAN play.

What if Battle.net only shows StarCraft: Remastered?

Open Games → All Games, confirm that you selected StarCraft rather than StarCraft II, update and restart Battle.net, and look for an Install or Play for Free control on the main StarCraft panel. If necessary, use Blizzard’s official Windows or Mac direct installer links.

Is there a Mac version?

Blizzard publishes a Mac installer. However, its public system-requirements page is dated, so it should not be treated as a guarantee for every current macOS release or Apple-silicon Mac. Install from Blizzard and consult its support page if the game fails to launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it safe to download StarCraft from a third-party site?

There is no need to do so. Blizzard provides Battle.net installation and official Windows and Mac installer links. Unofficial mirrors may contain malware, altered files, outdated patches, or unauthorized copies.

The Bottom Line

The original StarCraft and Brood War are currently free. Install StarCraft through Blizzard’s Battle.net app—or use Blizzard’s official direct installer if the launcher only displays the Remastered store page. Buy StarCraft: Remastered only if you want HD/4K graphics, enhanced audio, or ranked matchmaking; the classic campaigns and custom-game experience do not require it.
