Download GTA V for Windows only through an official storefront: the Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, Epic Games Store, or the Xbox app/Microsoft Store for PC. The current Windows release is Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced, while a new PC purchase normally also includes GTAV Legacy.
GTAV is not a universally free Windows download. Existing PC owners receive the Enhanced upgrade at no additional charge, but new players generally need to purchase a PC entitlement. Avoid torrents, cracked installers, “free activation” tools, repacks, and unofficial patch files: they are unauthorized and can contain malware.

Before downloading, check whether your PC meets the separate Enhanced or Legacy requirements, decide which storefront should own the game, and make sure you can sign in to the correct Rockstar Games account.
Which GTA V version should you download?
For most modern Windows gaming PCs, choose GTAV Enhanced. It is the current PC version, released on March 4, 2025, and adds higher-fidelity graphics, ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, shadows and reflections, DLSS and FSR support, faster loading on supported SSD and DirectStorage hardware, enhanced audio, Hao’s Special Works, and GTA+ support on PC. The available features depend on compatible hardware and software; details are listed on the official Rockstar Store page.

Choose GTAV Legacy instead if your computer cannot meet Enhanced’s requirements, if you use an older mod setup, or if your friends play in the Legacy version of GTA Online. Enhanced and Legacy are separate online environments: an Enhanced player cannot join friends playing Legacy, and vice versa.
A current PC purchase normally includes both editions, but you do not necessarily need to install both. The installation options and the amount of disk space required can vary by storefront. Install Legacy only if you need its lower hardware requirements, older mod compatibility, or access to friends using that edition.

The following specifications are the latest requirements published by Rockstar’s support documentation checked for this guide. Rockstar warns that downloadable content and programming changes can alter requirements over time, so check the official requirements page if you are reading this later.

Minimum specifications are not a performance guarantee. Enhanced’s minimum graphics requirement is a discrete 4 GB GPU, so many integrated graphics processors, laptop chipsets, and unsupported configurations may not run it properly even if the computer has enough RAM and CPU performance. If your PC falls below Enhanced’s graphics or SSD requirements, Legacy is the more realistic choice.
How much storage should you reserve?
Rockstar lists 105 GB for Enhanced and 125 GB for Legacy. Those figures are per-edition published requirements, not guaranteed download sizes. Reserve additional free space for temporary download files, updates, shader caches, and launcher files. If you plan to install both editions, leave considerably more space than either individual figure; Rockstar does not publish a guaranteed combined installation size.

At the time checked for this guide, official US storefront listings showed a list price of approximately $29.99, but prices, currency, taxes and promotions vary by country and can change. Treat the price shown at checkout as authoritative rather than assuming that any sale price is permanent.
Prerequisites before installing
- A supported 64-bit Windows installation for the edition you select.
- At least the published free storage, plus working space for downloading and updating.
- A valid entitlement from Rockstar, Steam, Epic, Xbox, or a currently supported promotion or subscription.
- A Rockstar Games account and access to its verification email.
- A stable internet connection for activation, downloading, online play and periodic entitlement verification.
- Current NVIDIA or AMD graphics drivers.
- The correct Steam, Epic, Microsoft/Xbox and Rockstar accounts, with no account mismatch.
- For GTA Online, an enabled BattlEye installation and no launch arguments that disable or bypass it.
Rockstar requires account sign-in, internet activation, periodic entitlement verification and supporting components such as the Rockstar platform, DirectX, Chromium, Visual C++ components and authentication software. This means you should not expect completely unrestricted offline operation.
How to install GTA V through Rockstar Games Launcher
New Rockstar Store purchase
- Download the Rockstar Games Launcher from Rockstar’s official site. Do not use a third-party installer.
- Install and open the launcher.
- Sign in to the Rockstar Games account that should own the game. Check the email address carefully before purchasing or redeeming a code.
- Purchase GTAV or redeem a legitimate Rockstar activation code.
- Open Games or My Library.
- Select Grand Theft Auto V, then choose Install Now.
- Select the destination drive and folder, and choose Install.
- Allow the launcher to download the game and current updates.
- Start GTAV from the Rockstar Games Launcher.
Rockstar’s current support flow uses Games → My Library → Install Now → Install, although wording can change as the launcher is updated.
If you already own the Rockstar PC version
Sign in with the same Rockstar account that originally purchased or activated GTAV. If the game is missing from My Library, do not buy it again immediately. First check that you are not using a different Rockstar account, that the launcher is online, and that the original purchase was not made through Steam, Epic or Xbox. Third-party storefront purchases must generally be launched through the platform where they were purchased.
A Rockstar activation code is one-time use and is permanently applied to the Rockstar account that was signed in when the code was redeemed. A code redeemed on the wrong account cannot normally be moved simply by signing into a different account later.

How to install GTA V through Steam
- Install and open Steam.
- Sign in to the Steam account that owns GTAV.
- Search for Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced.
- Purchase it, or open it in your Steam Library if it is already owned.
- Select Install, choose a Steam library with enough free space, and allow Steam to finish.
- Start the game from Steam rather than launching a manually created executable shortcut.
- When Rockstar Games Launcher opens, sign in to the Rockstar account intended for this Steam account.
- Verify the email address if requested.
- When prompted, choose Play On Steam.
Steam manages the installation and Steam updates, but it does not remove the Rockstar account requirement. Rockstar states that only one Rockstar Games account can be linked to a Steam account. Confirm the account before completing the first launch, because changing account relationships can require Rockstar Support and may be restricted.
Verify Steam files
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click GTAV.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
Use this after an interrupted download, missing files, a failed update or some activation and launch errors. Steam may re-download damaged or incomplete files.
How to install GTA V through Epic Games Store
- Install and open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Sign in to the Epic account that owns GTAV.
- Search for Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced.
- Select Buy Now for a new purchase, or Install if the game is already in your library.
- Choose the installation folder and allow Epic to complete the download.
- Start GTAV through the Epic Games Launcher.
- When Rockstar Games Launcher opens, sign in to the Rockstar account intended for that Epic account.
- Verify the email address if requested.
- Choose Play On Epic when prompted.
Only one Rockstar Games account can be linked to an Epic account. Starting the game through Epic is important because Epic owns and manages the relevant installation and entitlement relationship.

Existing Epic owner cannot see Enhanced
Epic says that existing GTAV owners receive Enhanced automatically. If the Enhanced edition is not visible:

- Clear the Epic launcher cache.
- Sign in again.
- Confirm that this is the Epic account that originally owned GTAV.
- Launch the game from Epic rather than from a standalone desktop shortcut.

How to install GTA V through the Xbox app on PC
- Install or update the Xbox app for Windows.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns GTAV or will purchase it.
- Search for Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced (PC).
- Purchase it, or select Install if the entitlement is already attached to your account.
- Choose the destination drive.
- Wait for the Xbox app to complete the installation.
- Launch the game from the Xbox app or its installed library entry.
- Complete Rockstar Games sign-in and account linking if prompted.
The Xbox listing identifies this as the PC Enhanced product and includes both Enhanced and Legacy. Do not confuse subscription access with ownership: Xbox’s official April 7, 2026 catalog notice states that GTAV left Cloud, Console and PC Game Pass on April 15, 2026. Older instructions that describe GTAV as currently included with PC Game Pass are therefore stale unless a newer catalog listing says otherwise.
Is GTA V free on Windows?
Not as a universal free download. There are four situations that are often confused:
- Existing PC owners: If you already owned GTAV on a supported PC storefront, the Enhanced upgrade is available at no additional charge through the relevant account and platform.
- New PC players: A new player generally needs to buy a PC copy from Rockstar, Steam, Epic or Xbox PC.
- Temporary promotions: A legitimate promotion may provide access for a limited time or grant a storefront entitlement, but its terms and expiration date apply.
- Subscriptions: A subscription catalog is temporary access, not permanent ownership. GTAV left PC Game Pass on April 15, 2026.
There is no safe or legitimate “free GTA V for Windows” installer outside an actual official entitlement or promotion. Never download a cracked executable, torrent, repack, DLL pack, key generator or unofficial “activation patch.” Apart from copyright and account risks, these downloads are a common way to distribute malware and credential stealers.
Transfer Legacy saves and GTA Online progress to Enhanced
Migration is a transfer process, not automatic synchronization. After moving progress to Enhanced, progress made separately in Legacy does not continuously synchronize back to Enhanced.
Transfer a Story Mode save
Upload the save from Legacy
- Open GTAV Legacy on PC.
- Open the Pause Menu.
- Select Game.
- Select Upload Save Game.
- Choose the save you want to transfer.
- Confirm the upload and wait for the success message.
Download the save in Enhanced
If Enhanced has no existing Story Mode save:
- Open GTAV Enhanced.
- Select the Story tab on the landing page.
- Confirm that the uploaded save is available.
- Download it.
If Enhanced already contains Story Mode saves, open the Pause Menu and select Game → Download Save Game. Choose the uploaded save, confirm, and wait for the download to finish.

- It is a PC-to-PC procedure.
- Only one save can be uploaded at a time.
- An uploaded save remains available for download for 90 days.
- After the save is successfully downloaded into Enhanced, another Story Mode migration is not available on that account.
- Progress made in Legacy after the migration does not synchronize back to Enhanced.

Transfer a GTA Online profile
- Open GTAV Enhanced.
- From the landing page, select Online, or open the Pause Menu and select Online.
- Select Migrate Profile.
- Choose the eligible Legacy profile.
- Confirm the migration.
- Review the character and continue with the migrated character, or start a new one.
Online migration may be unavailable for suspended, banned, illegitimate or insufficiently progressed profiles. It does not support moving a console profile to PC or a PC profile to console through this procedure. Legacy progress remains available after migration, but Enhanced and Legacy Online progress do not synchronize afterward. Choosing a new character can overwrite an existing character slot, so review the prompt carefully.

Updates and patching
The latest official title-update page checked for this guide identifies GTAV Title Update 1.73, including PC Enhanced and Legacy changes dated as recently as July 30, 2026. The support page was updated August 5, 2026. You should not download a separate “latest patch” from a file-sharing site.

- Connect the computer to the internet.
- Start the game through Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, Epic or Xbox, depending on where it was purchased.
- Allow the platform launcher to download and install the current update.
- If the update fails, restart the launcher and Windows.
- Verify the game files through the relevant storefront.
- Check the official title-update notes and Rockstar Support for error-specific instructions.
Rockstar says that launching while connected allows the latest patch to be applied automatically.

Fix common download, activation and launch problems
GTA V is not in my library
The most common cause is an account mismatch. Work through this order:
- Sign out of the active launcher.
- Confirm the email address and account used to purchase GTAV.
- Sign back in to that exact Steam, Epic, Microsoft/Xbox or Rockstar account.
- If using Epic, reset library filters and restart the launcher.
- Confirm that the game was purchased for PC, not only for PlayStation or Xbox console.
- Start the game through the original storefront instead of a desktop shortcut.
- Do not redeem a code again on another account.
- If the entitlement still does not appear, contact the storefront or Rockstar Support with proof of purchase.
A PlayStation or Xbox console entitlement should not be treated as a Windows license. PC and console ownership are separate storefront entitlements unless a specific promotion explicitly states otherwise.
“Activation required” or “Rockstar account does not own GTAV”
This usually means the game is being started through the wrong storefront, the platform account is linked to the wrong Rockstar account, the activation code was already used, or local launcher data is damaged.
- Start GTAV from the platform where it was purchased.
- Check the Rockstar account shown in the launcher.
- Do not repeatedly unlink and relink accounts without following Rockstar’s support instructions.
- If the problem is the documented Steam activation-code error, open Rockstar Games Launcher and use Settings → Account Information → Delete local profile, then sign in again.
Deleting the local profile removes local launcher profile data; it does not delete the Rockstar account or saved games. Rockstar’s Steam activation-code support article contains the applicable recovery steps.
Rockstar Games Launcher will not initialize
- Install the latest version of the Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Sign in again and restart Windows.
- Check whether antivirus or security software is blocking the launcher or game.
- Verify GTAV files in Steam, Epic or the relevant platform.
- If the message specifically mentions DirectX, D3D or C++, repair or reinstall the components in the game’s
Redistributablesfolder.

GTAV crashes, freezes or performs badly
- Connect to the internet and launch once so the current update can apply.
- Update your NVIDIA or AMD graphics driver.
- Verify the game files through the storefront.
- Check antivirus and firewall interference.
- Repair DirectX and Visual C++ redistributables.
- Review
My DocumentsRockstar GamesGTAVlauncher.log. - If contacting Rockstar Support, generate and provide DxDiag and MSInfo reports as requested.

GTA Online will not connect
Official GTA Online play on PC requires BattlEye. Check all of the following:

- BattlEye is installed and enabled.
- Rockstar Games Launcher launch arguments are blank.
- Steam launch options are blank.
- Epic launch options are disabled and blank.
- The game is launched through Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam or Epic rather than a batch file, Command Prompt or untrusted shortcut.
- Antivirus software is not blocking the BattlEye folder.
Rockstar states that disabling BattlEye prevents connection to official GTA Online servers. Do not follow advice that attempts to bypass it. See the BattlEye troubleshooting guide.
Mods cause launch or online problems
Keep modded Story Mode and official GTA Online installations separate. Do not use gameplay-modifying files in official online sessions. Rockstar identifies ReShade and Special_K as software that may cause technical problems or be disabled during online play. BattlEye is active for official GTA Online, so remove or disable conflicting software before troubleshooting online launch failures. Rockstar’s BattlEye FAQ explains the current restrictions.
Friends cannot join my session
Confirm that all players are using the same edition:
- Enhanced with Enhanced.
- Legacy with Legacy.
Enhanced and Legacy use separate GTA Online environments and cannot play together.

Rockstar Games Launcher
Choose Rockstar if you want the most direct Rockstar purchase and do not need Steam or Epic library features. The trade-off is that Rockstar’s account, launcher, activation and periodic verification systems remain part of the experience.
Steam
Steam is a good choice if your PC library, achievements and friends are already there. The trade-offs are that Rockstar account linking is still required, Steam manages installation and updates, and only one Rockstar account can be linked to the Steam account.
Epic Games Store
Epic is particularly practical if you already own the older Epic GTAV entitlement, because existing owners receive Enhanced automatically. The trade-offs are that both Epic and Rockstar Launcher participate in the process, only one Rockstar account can be linked to the Epic account, and library filters or launcher cache can sometimes hide the entitlement.

Xbox app and Microsoft Store
Choose the Xbox PC version if you prefer Microsoft account ownership and already use the Xbox app. Remember that subscription access is not permanent ownership and that GTAV left PC Game Pass on April 15, 2026.
Other compatibility notes
Can you install both editions?
A current PC purchase normally includes Enhanced and Legacy, but installing both is optional. You may need both if you play with different groups of friends, maintain an older Legacy mod setup, or use a second installation for compatibility. Reserve substantially more free space than the published requirement for one edition, because Rockstar does not guarantee a single combined installation figure.
Can you move a console save or license to Windows?
Do not assume that a PlayStation or Xbox purchase grants Windows ownership. The supported migration procedures described above are for PC Legacy-to-Enhanced transfers. They do not turn a console license into a PC license or provide a general console-to-PC save transfer.
Steam Deck and Linux
This guide covers Windows. Rockstar says GTAV and GTA Online are not officially supported on Steam Deck. Story Mode may be playable in some configurations, but BattlEye prevents GTA Online on Steam Deck. See Rockstar’s BattlEye FAQ for the current position.

Can I download GTA V for Windows for free?

Yes. Steam manages the purchase, installation and updates, but GTAV still requires Rockstar Games account sign-in and linking. Only one Rockstar Games account can be linked to a Steam account.
Does the Epic Games version include GTAV Enhanced?
Existing Epic GTAV owners receive Enhanced automatically, and a current PC purchase normally includes both Enhanced and Legacy. If Enhanced is missing, reset Epic library filters, restart the launcher, clear its cache and verify that you are using the original Epic account.
Do I need an SSD for GTA V?
GTAV Enhanced lists an SSD as a minimum requirement. GTAV Legacy lists a 125 GB HDD requirement. Enhanced also has higher GPU and Windows requirements, so an older computer may need Legacy even if it has enough storage.
Can Enhanced and Legacy players play GTA Online together?
No. Enhanced and Legacy are separate GTA Online environments. Everyone joining the same session must use the same edition.
Can I transfer my Legacy PC save to Enhanced?
Yes, through Rockstar’s supported one-time migration process. Story Mode saves are uploaded from Legacy and downloaded in Enhanced; GTA Online uses the Enhanced menu option Online → Migrate Profile. The two editions do not synchronize after migration.
