It is a community Android project based on the open-source xemu emulator, not an official Microsoft product or an official mobile release of xemu. You need a 64-bit ARM Android device with Vulkan support, the emulator APK, and your own legally obtained Xbox system files and game images.
Performance and compatibility vary by game, phone, GPU driver, Android version, and X1 BOX release. This guide covers the safe download, installation, first-run setup, game importing, controller configuration, graphics settings, and the most common fixes.
Quick verdict
- What it emulates: The original Xbox—not Xbox 360, Xbox One, or Xbox Series consoles.
- Minimum platform listed by the project: Android 8.0/API 26 or newer, 64-bit ARM using
arm64-v8a, and Vulkan-capable graphics hardware. - Practical recommendation: A modern flagship or gaming-oriented phone or tablet, preferably with at least 8 GB of RAM and good thermal management.
- Required files: MCPX boot ROM, Xbox flash ROM/BIOS, Xbox hard-disk image, and legally obtained game files or images.
- Download source: The project’s GitHub releases page.
- Reality check: Meeting the minimum specification does not guarantee that every game will boot or run well.
The latest release visible when checked was X1 BOX 1.2.5, dated April 22, 2026. Check the releases page for a newer build before installing; menu names, defaults, and supported formats can change between versions.
What is X1 BOX?
X1 BOX is a standalone Android application built around the xemu original Xbox emulation project. Its repository describes an Android-focused setup wizard, game-library browser, optional online cover-art lookup, on-screen Xbox controls, and support for USB and Bluetooth controllers.

It is not:
- Microsoft software;
- Xbox Cloud Gaming;
- Xbox Remote Play;
- an emulator for Xbox One, Xbox Series, or Xbox 360 games; or
- the official xemu Android app.
The official xemu FAQ says that xemu has no official Android or iOS port. X1 BOX should therefore be understood as a community Android port or fork based on xemu.
Check whether your Android device is suitable
Required checks
- Android version: Open Settings → About phone → Android version. X1 BOX lists Android 8.0 or newer as its minimum.
- 64-bit ARM: Confirm that the phone uses a 64-bit ARM platform and supports the
arm64-v8aABI. A reputable device-information utility or the manufacturer’s specifications can help. - Vulkan: Check the manufacturer’s specifications or a trusted hardware-information utility. Vulkan support is listed as a project requirement.
- RAM: X1 BOX recommends at least 8 GB. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee of performance.
- Storage: Leave room for the APK, system files, virtual Xbox hard disk, game images, save data, and backups.
Identify the GPU family—such as Adreno, Mali, or Xclipse—because Android graphics-driver behavior can affect rendering. There is no universal Snapdragon or GPU cutoff documented by X1 BOX, so do not treat a particular chipset family as a guarantee that every title will work.
Modern flagship and gaming devices are more plausible candidates than low-end phones, particularly for sustained play. Emulation can generate heat and trigger thermal throttling, so a phone that looks fast in short benchmarks may still lose performance during a longer session.
Download the correct X1 BOX APK
- Open the project’s official GitHub releases page.
- Choose the newest stable release, not an arbitrary build from a fork or file-sharing site.
- Open the release entry and download the APK asset supplied there.
- Confirm that the repository owner is WinDroidEmulation and that the release tag matches the page you intended to use.
- Scan the downloaded file with Android’s security tools before installing it.
The release page describes its APK as an official release build signed through Gradle and built with GitHub Actions. Those are statements from the project, not independent security certification. Avoid random APK mirrors, “BIOS packs,” preconfigured ROM bundles, and downloads that combine the emulator with copyrighted games.
Install X1 BOX on Android
- Open the downloaded APK from your browser’s downloads list or a file manager.
- If Android blocks the installation, open the system prompt to allow the browser or file manager to install unknown applications. The exact label varies by Android version and manufacturer.
- Install X1 BOX.
- After installation, revoke the install unknown apps permission for that browser or file manager unless you still need it.
- Launch X1 BOX and begin its setup wizard.
Do not grant unrelated permissions. Android’s storage and permission screens can differ between devices, so follow the system file picker and the permissions requested by the selected release rather than relying on an old screenshot or menu path.
Prepare the required Xbox files
X1 BOX does not provide copyrighted Xbox firmware, BIOS files, hard-disk images, or games. You must supply the files yourself through lawful means appropriate to your jurisdiction.
The setup normally requires these categories:
- MCPX boot ROM
- Flash ROM/Xbox BIOS
- Xbox hard-disk image
- Game image or extracted game files
Do not download these files from ROM repositories or unverified “BIOS pack” sites. Owning a physical disc does not automatically make every form of copying or downloading legal in every country, so consult the law that applies to you.
The upstream xemu documentation discusses working with legal backups and notes that MCPX and BIOS dumps should come from a version 1.0 Xbox. That is xemu’s guidance; it should not be presented as a universal X1 BOX rule for every build. Follow the requirements documented by the X1 BOX release you install.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Complete the first-run setup wizard
X1 BOX includes an Android-oriented setup wizard, but exact labels and screens can change between releases. Use Android’s system file picker when prompted.
- Select the MCPX boot ROM.
- Select the flash ROM or BIOS.
- Select the Xbox hard-disk image.
- Choose a stable location for the emulator’s configuration and game files.
- Grant only the storage access requested by Android and the application.
- Complete the wizard and test whether the emulator can reach the Xbox dashboard or otherwise initialize successfully.
Keep the system files in stable local storage. If you move, rename, or delete them later, the emulator may fail to boot or ask you to configure the files again. Back up the virtual hard-disk image after a successful setup because it can contain configuration and save data.
If the wizard needs to be run again, look for its redo or reset-setup option in the current release. X1 BOX release notes have specifically mentioned setup-wizard redo support, but the exact location can change.
Import your games
Choose a dedicated game folder
- Create a dedicated folder for your legally obtained Xbox game images or extracted game files.
- Keep the folder in storage that Android and X1 BOX can access consistently.
- Copy only the files you intend to test into it.
- In X1 BOX, open the game-library or import function.
- Select the folder or an individual game image when the file picker appears.
- Allow the application to scan and identify the titles.
X1 BOX supports list and cover-grid library views and offers optional online cover-art lookup. Cover art is a convenience feature; it does not mean the game itself is being downloaded.
“Xbox ISO” is not a precise format
Do not assume that every file named .iso is ready to use. Original Xbox dumps can require an XISO-compatible image or an extracted game directory, depending on the build and import workflow. The available X1 BOX documentation does not establish a definitive format matrix for every 1.2.5 configuration.
Rank #2
- 4K HD Game Box: Plug and play game box with HDMI Output, can be connected to TV/monitor/projector.
- Convenient Function: The console system supports game search, game collection, instant archive read and pause.
- Many Retro Games: With 30000+ built-in retro games, awaken your pleasant childhood memories.
- Multiple Emulator: With 20+ emulators, allow you to enjoy a huge amount of games in one game console.
- Wireless Controller: Comes with 2 * 2.4G wireless controllers, powered by 2 AAA batteries (NOT included)
Use a game image or extracted files in the format accepted by your installed X1 BOX release. If a raw dump is not detected, convert or rebuild it on a computer with a reputable XISO tool, then import the resulting image through the app’s game-library flow. Do not use an untested conversion command as if it were guaranteed for every dump, operating system, or X1 BOX version.
Configure controls
X1 BOX provides an on-screen Xbox controller and supports physical USB and Bluetooth controllers. A physical controller is strongly preferable for games that rely on accurate analog sticks, triggers, or many simultaneous buttons.
- Pair or connect the controller before launching the emulator.
- Check analog-stick, trigger, button, and directional-pad mappings.
- Reconnect the controller if Android or X1 BOX fails to detect it.
- Try a wired USB controller if Bluetooth input is unstable.
- Do not assume that every controller’s guide, share, or analog-trigger behavior maps exactly like an original Xbox controller.
The project can hide or show on-screen controls automatically when a physical controller is connected. If the overlay remains visible, check the current input or touchscreen settings.

Settings are version-sensitive. X1 BOX release notes show that OpenGL ES, Vulkan, VSync, filtering, per-game settings, and JIT options have changed over time:
- Version 1.1.5 added OpenGL ES, VSync, filtering, and an EEPROM-language option.
- Version 1.1.7 mentioned Mali/MediaTek fixes and made OpenGL ES the default for new installs.
- Version 1.2.3 said Vulkan selection was working again and added per-game settings.
- Version 1.2.5 added a JIT-engine configuration option and further crash fixes.
Start with the default renderer and settings for your installed version. If the game displays broken graphics or a black screen, test the other available graphics backend. Vulkan is not always faster, and OpenGL ES is not always more compatible; the result depends on the device driver and title.
For slow or uneven performance:
- Lower internal resolution or other enhancements.
- Try VSync on and off if frame pacing is uneven.
- Use per-game settings instead of changing the global configuration when only one title has trouble.
- Test the available JIT options in releases that provide them.
- Close background applications and test while the phone is cool.
- Update Android and device GPU drivers when the manufacturer provides updates.
Do not infer a fixed frame rate from a chipset name. Sustained performance depends on game behavior, thermal throttling, renderer choice, and the individual X1 BOX build.
Launch your first game
On a successful first launch, the emulator should open without immediately crashing, initialize the Xbox firmware or dashboard, display the selected title in the library, respond to controls, and produce audio and video. The game should eventually reach its title screen or gameplay.
The first launch may take longer while files or caches are initialized. Exit through the emulator’s own menu where possible rather than force-closing Android. Once a game saves successfully, back up the virtual hard-disk image and configuration files before experimenting with major settings.

The APK will not install
Likely causes include Android below 8.0, a 32-bit device, blocked unknown-source installation, a corrupted download, or an APK architecture mismatch.
- Re-download the APK from the project’s GitHub releases page.
- Confirm that the device is 64-bit ARM.
- Allow installation only for the browser or file manager you are using.
- Revoke that permission after installation.
- Do not use a repackaged APK from an unofficial mirror.
The setup wizard rejects a file
The file may be incorrect, incomplete, inaccessible, or incompatible with the selected build. Re-run the wizard and select the MCPX, BIOS/flash, and hard-disk files again from stable local storage. Avoid replacing them with files from an unverified download bundle.
The game does not appear
- Check that the library points to the folder containing the actual game files.
- Try the app’s manual import option.
- Confirm that the image or directory uses a format recognized by this release.
- Test a known-good game image.
- If necessary, convert or rebuild the dump on a computer using an appropriate XISO tool.
- Check Android storage access and file-picker permissions.
Black screen or crash at boot
- Recheck the MCPX and BIOS/flash selections.
- Test the other available graphics backend.
- Reset per-game settings to defaults.
- Reduce resolution and disable enhancements.
- Try another title to distinguish a game-specific issue from a system setup problem.
- Check the project’s issue tracker and compatibility reports for the installed release.
Performance is too slow
Lower resolution and enhancements, test the available JIT options, close background apps, and try again with the device cool. If the phone is throttling, a short successful test may not represent sustained gameplay. A game that runs well on desktop xemu may still perform poorly on Android.
Audio crackles or stutters
Test the JIT option available in later releases, try the alternate graphics backend, disable enhancements, and check whether the problem affects multiple games. Audio problems can result from unstable frame times, thermal throttling, or a title-specific emulation issue.
The controller is not detected
Connect or pair it before launching X1 BOX, reopen the emulator, rebind the controls, and test a wired connection. Confirm analog sticks and triggers separately; some Android controllers do not expose every feature in the same way.

How compatible is X1 BOX?
There is no responsible “all original Xbox games work” claim. Compatibility is title-, device-, driver-, and version-dependent. Android adds variables that do not apply in the same way to desktop xemu:
- ARM64 code generation;
- mobile GPU drivers;
- Vulkan and OpenGL ES differences;
- thermal throttling;
- Android memory pressure and process suspension;
- storage permissions and file-picker behavior; and
- touch and controller mapping.
The official xemu compatibility resources are useful background evidence, but reports made with desktop xemu do not guarantee identical results in X1 BOX. Treat compatibility reports as clues, then test the specific game on your device and installed release.
Recommended Free Tools
Should you use X1 BOX, desktop xemu, or another Android fork?
Use X1 BOX when
- You specifically want original Xbox emulation on Android.
- Your device meets the 64-bit ARM and Vulkan requirements.
- You can provide your own lawful system and game files.
- You accept experimental, game-by-game compatibility.
- You want an Android library and touch-control workflow.
Use official desktop xemu when
You have a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer and want the upstream-supported desktop path. The official xemu website provides desktop downloads and documentation.
Try hakuX when
hakuX is an X1 BOX/xemu fork described as optimized for Adreno devices. It may be worth testing on Snapdragon hardware when a particular game performs poorly in standard X1 BOX, but it remains a separate community fork with its own releases and compatibility behavior.
Consider Xanite when
Xanite is another experimental Android original Xbox emulator project. Its project information states that it supports XISO format only. It should not be treated as a universal replacement for X1 BOX.
Use original Xbox hardware when
You want the reference level of compatibility and do not specifically need emulation. Authentic hardware avoids Android, mobile-driver, and port-specific limitations, although it is not an emulation solution.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSafety and legal notes
The emulator software and copyrighted Xbox firmware or games are separate issues. X1 BOX does not supply the MCPX ROM, BIOS, hard-disk image, or games. Use files obtained or dumped lawfully under the rules that apply where you live, and avoid websites offering preloaded ROMs, BIOS packs, or “ready-to-play” bundles.
For the safest installation, use the project’s GitHub release page, keep the APK and system files in stable locations, back up your virtual hard disk, and avoid granting permissions unrelated to emulation.
