Tell us the title, who you think would enjoy it, and whether it shines solo, with friends locally, or online. We’re looking for recommendations that help other players find the right game, not a definitive ranking.
What makes a recommendation useful?
A game can be a favorite for very different reasons: an expansive world to explore, a tough challenge to master, a clever story, or a great evening with friends. Nintendo describes its own recommendations as “a variety of different experiences” and “just a smattering of games”—a good reminder that no single list can settle what every player should try. When you send yours, include a little context along with the name:
- Why it stands out: What made you remember it or keep playing?
- Who it suits: A solo explorer, competitive player, family, strategy fan, or someone who prefers short sessions?
- How it plays with others: Is it best alone, locally with friends, online, or some combination? Mention any extra games, systems, controllers, or online access it may require.
- Which version you mean: Name the Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 edition if there’s any chance of confusion.
Some starting points—not a definitive list
These examples span different ways to play. They’re prompts for the kinds of recommendations we’d like to hear, not a ranking or a claim that these are the only games worth mentioning.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- Open-world exploration: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom gives players room to explore and choose their own paths.
- Racing and party play: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe offers racing and battle modes, with local and online play options described by Nintendo.
- Action with repeat runs: Hades centers on repeated escape attempts, with story progression between them.
- Strategy and exploration: Pikmin 4 combines exploring with directing a group of creatures.
- Online squads: Nintendo describes Fortnite as a free-to-play battle royale with online squads.
- Creature collecting: Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet feature open-world collecting, training, and battles.
- Group dancing: Just Dance 2025 Edition is geared toward dancing together and exercise-oriented play.
Other possibilities include Animal Crossing: New Horizons for simulation, Kirby and the Forgotten Land for platforming, Mario Party Superstars for multiplayer, and Game Builder Garage for creative play. Play Nintendo’s favorite Switch game poll includes these and other examples, lists ESRB ratings for the games shown, and cautions that multiplayer may require additional games, systems, or accessories. Check the rating and requirements for the specific game and edition you have in mind.
Be precise about Switch and Switch 2 editions
Nintendo’s must-play games collection includes both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 titles and editions, as well as future release listings. If you’re recommending a game from that collection, identify the platform edition and make sure it is already released before describing it as playable. The platform label matters: a game title alone may not tell readers which version you mean.
Rank #2
- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
Tell us what lists might have missed
Published rankings can be useful starting points, but they answer different questions. Nintendo Life’s 2026 guide is an editorial ranking: it puts The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild first, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 third, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom fifth, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sixth. Metacritic’s best-reviewed Switch games of 2025 list instead covers games released on either Switch 2 or the original Switch during 2025 and requires at least seven scored professional reviews. Neither method tells us which game you think readers have overlooked—or who would love it.
