What did the lawsuit allege?
In Trejo v. Sony, a proposed class action filed in Illinois, the plaintiff alleged that PS5 consoles could crash or power down while players were gaming and that Sony knew about the problem but failed to disclose it. These were allegations in a complaint, not proven facts.
A separate complaint filed in Castaneda v. Amazon.com, Inc. on June 17, 2022, described similar alleged symptoms: crashes or shutdowns during play, with the problem said to be more prominent—but not limited to—next-generation PS5 games. It alleged that players could lose game progress and might see a warning after restarting about possible data loss, corruption, or damage. The complaint also alleged that some users downgraded to PS4 versions of games as a workaround; the reviewed sources do not verify that workaround as general technical advice. What happened to the Sony case?
The plaintiff in Trejo v. Sony voluntarily dismissed the proposed class action without prejudice on November 7, 2022. The cited case-status report says the dismissal notice and later court documents did not explain the reason. “Without prejudice” means the dismissal itself was not a ruling on whether the allegations were true; the available report does not establish what happened beyond that procedural outcome. Why is the Amazon lawsuit separate?
Castaneda v. Amazon.com, Inc. was a different case against Amazon, not Sony. It focused on Amazon’s product-page representations and alleged failure to disclose a PS5 defect. On June 26, 2023, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois dismissed the claims.
The court said the complaint did not provide enough detail to support a plausible inference that PS5 consoles generally had the alleged latent design defect. It noted that the pleading did not identify what specifically caused the supposed defect and cited only four other consumer examples. Those examples were allegations in that case, not a measure of how often PS5 consoles fail. The ruling addressed the complaint against Amazon; it was not a finding that crashes never happen, and it did not resolve a claim against Sony. Read the court’s June 26, 2023 opinion.

Did a court find that Sony hid a PS5 defect?
No. The Sony case ended in a voluntary dismissal, and the Amazon case concerned a different defendant and different claims. The available court opinion dismissed the Amazon complaint for insufficient factual support for a console-wide latent defect; it did not find that Sony concealed a defect. The reviewed sources also do not establish a population-level PS5 failure rate or how many owners were affected.
