A 30 August 2024 report described a PS5 Pro with a PS5 Slim-like shape and three black horizontal stripes. Sony later confirmed the console’s three exterior blades and explained their cooling purpose. The report was a leak, not an official reveal at the time; Sony’s subsequent teardown is what established the design details officially.
What the August 2024 report claimed
Gadgets 360 reported on 30 August 2024 that Dealabs leaker billbil-kun had described the console’s design based on a visual said to come from its packaging. The account portrayed a white console shaped much like the PS5 Slim, but thicker, with three horizontal black stripes, two USB-C ports on the front and a power button.

Those details were attributed to the leak, not to Sony. The report also could not establish whether the pictured design represented a disc-drive model. It suggested the sketch might show a digital version and raised the possibility of an external drive, but that was uncertainty about the image—not a confirmed product specification.
What Sony later confirmed about the design
In a PlayStation Blog engineering teardown published on 21 April 2025, Sony described the PS5 Pro’s exterior as three distinct horizontal blades. That confirms the defining three-line feature reported in 2024. Sony says the console’s look remains consistent with the PS5 family and that the Pro is slightly smaller than the original PS5.

Sony’s confirmation should be distinguished from the original leak: the company’s later teardown establishes the exterior design and its stated purpose, rather than retroactively making every detail in the earlier sketch an official specification.
The three blades are also airflow paths
Shinya Tsuchida, PS5 Pro Mechanical Design Lead, said: “The distinctive three slits are new airflow paths that were not present in the original PS5, or the current PS5.” Sony says the openings supply the greater airflow needed for cooling while also functioning as a design feature. This is Sony’s explanation of the design, not an independent test of cooling performance.
Other ventilation and noise details
Sony says the rear and bottom surfaces serve as intake and exhaust areas, with larger vent surfaces than on other PS5 models. The teardown also describes internal louvers between the main unit and its cover, intended to make some fan noise less audible toward the front. These are manufacturer-stated design purposes; the teardown does not establish a measured noise level.

The company notes that HDMI, LAN and USB ports sit slightly higher than on the current PS5 to make room for the high-density mainboard. That placement detail comes from Sony’s teardown, not from the 2024 design report.
How the 2024 rumor timeline unfolded
On 5 September 2024, GameSpot reported that PlayStation 30th-anniversary imagery appeared to show a product silhouette resembling the leaked three-line design. GameSpot cautioned that the image was “very far from confirmation” that it depicted a PS5 Pro. It was a contemporaneous clue that fueled speculation, not proof of the console’s design. Sony’s 2025 teardown—not the anniversary artwork—is the official confirmation of the blades and their airflow role.
Quick Recap
What the leak did—and did not—establish
| Design question | August 2024 report | Later official information |
|---|---|---|
| Overall shape | Described as similar to the PS5 Slim and thicker, based on the reported sketch. Gadgets 360 | Sony says the look fits the PS5 family and the Pro is slightly smaller than the original PS5. PlayStation Blog |
| Three stripes or blades | The sketch was reported to show three black horizontal stripes. Gadgets 360 | Sony confirms three distinct exterior blades or slits and says they provide new airflow paths. PlayStation Blog |
| Ports | The report described two front USB-C ports and a power button. Gadgets 360 | Sony’s teardown says HDMI, LAN and USB ports sit slightly higher than on the current PS5 to accommodate the mainboard. PlayStation Blog |
| Disc-drive configuration | The report could not tell whether the sketch showed a disc-drive model; it floated a digital-version interpretation and possible external drive. Gadgets 360 | The report’s uncertainty should not be treated as a current product specification. The cited teardown is about engineering and design, not a confirmation of the sketch’s disc-drive configuration. PlayStation Blog |
| Cooling and noise rationale | No official explanation was established by the leak report. | Sony says the blades create airflow paths, rear and bottom surfaces handle intake and exhaust, and internal louvers help direct some fan noise away from the front. PlayStation Blog |
