PlayStation 5 Pro Preview: I Don’t Need It, but I Want It

I want the PS5 Pro’s sharper supported games and upgraded PSSR, but a working PS5 is still enough unless those improvements justify the local price.

I don’t need a PS5 Pro to keep playing on my working PS5. I want one because Sony’s upgraded graphics hardware, ray tracing and PSSR upscaling promise a more polished way to play supported games. Whether that premium is worth paying depends on the games I play, the display I use and the price where I live—not on a promise that every game will look or run better.

What the PS5 Pro improves—and what it doesn’t promise

Sony’s pitch for the PS5 Pro centers on a more capable GPU, advanced ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an upscaling technology. The aim is to improve visuals and performance in games that support Pro features. Sony’s own qualification is important: “PS5 Pro enhanced features will vary by game.” The console does not guarantee a universal frame-rate boost, native 4K output or improved ray tracing in every PS5 title. Sony’s launch announcement describes the hardware and its game-dependent features.

PSSR is also evolving. In its February 27, 2026 announcement, Sony said an upgraded version was coming to PS5 Pro and that PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 PS5 Pro titles as of that date. Mark Cerny described it as “an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them.” That count shows the technology had reached a range of games; it does not tell you how much any particular game improves, or whether its implementation suits your preferences. Sony’s PSSR announcement explains the update.

What a game-specific upgrade can look like

Housemarque’s Saros is a useful example of why it pays to check individual games rather than assume a console-wide result. In an April 16, 2026 feature, the developer said the PS5 Pro version uses upgraded PSSR and a higher base render resolution—the resolution before upscaling—to produce a sharper image at 60 fps during gameplay. Housemarque also said key story cinematics run at 30 fps. Those are the developer’s descriptions of one game, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee about other titles. Housemarque’s feature on Saros gives the game-specific details.

PS5 Pro price now: check your local market

The PS5 Pro launched on November 7, 2024, with launch MSRPs of US $699.99, UK £699.99, Europe €799.99 and Japan ¥119,980. Those are historical launch figures, not the current recommended prices. Sony announced updated recommended retail prices on March 27, 2026, effective April 2, 2026:

Market Sony’s updated recommended retail price
United States $899.99
United Kingdom £789.99
Europe €899.99
Japan ¥137,980

These are Sony’s announced recommended prices, not a promise that every retailer charges that amount or has stock. For other territories, Sony directs buyers to local retailers or direct.playstation.com; check the current local listing before deciding. The price change makes the central question sharper: how much is the visual improvement in the games you actually play worth to you? Sony’s March 27, 2026 price notice lists the updated regional figures and effective date.

What comes with the console

The PS5 Pro is a disc-less console with a stated 2TB SSD capacity. Sony says a DualSense controller and Astro’s Playroom are included. If you own physical PS5 games or want to use discs, Sony says the separately sold Disc Drive for PS5 can be added. Existing PS5 accessories are supported. The drive is a separate cost, so include it in the total if disc compatibility matters to your setup. Sony’s launch announcement provides the configuration details.

  • Vertical Stand sold seperately

Consider the storage figure as included capacity, not a claim that the full 2TB is available to games. If your library outgrows the console’s storage, compatible M.2 SSD expansion is an option; check Sony’s current requirements before buying a drive.

Should you upgrade from a working PS5?

If your current console already plays the games you want, the Pro is an optional mid-generation upgrade, not a requirement. Its case is strongest when the games you care about have Pro enhancements you value and the cost fits your budget. Use these checks before making the purchase:

  • Games: Look up the specific titles you play and what their PS5 Pro modes change. A general promise of better visuals is less useful than an upgrade in a game you return to often.
  • Image or frame rate: Decide whether you care more about sharper images, visual effects or smooth motion. Game-specific modes can make different trade-offs; do not assume the Pro removes them.
  • Display: Consider whether your TV or monitor—and your own viewing distance and preferences—will make the improvements noticeable to you. Sony’s descriptions do not establish a universal display requirement or a measured benefit for every screen.
  • Physical games: If you use discs, account for the separately sold Disc Drive. If your library is digital, the absence of a built-in drive may not matter.
  • Total cost: Compare the current local console price, any drive or storage expansion you need, and the value of keeping your existing PS5. The launch MSRP is no longer a reliable guide to what you will pay.
  • Upgrade appetite: Even a meaningful improvement in selected games may not justify replacing a console that already meets your needs. Waiting is a sensible choice if you are uncertain which supported upgrades matter to you.

My verdict: the want is real; the need is not

I want the PS5 Pro for the possibility of a sharper, more visually ambitious version of games I care about. But I don’t need to replace a working PS5 unless those specific upgrades earn their cost for me. At Sony’s current announced prices in the US, UK, Europe and Japan, the sensible decision is to check the games, the disc situation and the local total first. If those line up with what you want from your setup, the Pro has a clear appeal; if not, keeping your PS5 is a perfectly good answer.
