The PS5 Pro is a disc-less PlayStation 5 with a 2TB SSD, an upgraded GPU, faster memory, improved ray tracing and Sony’s PSSR upscaling. Sony claims up to 45% faster gameplay rendering than the current PS5, but that is an upper-bound manufacturer comparison—not a guaranteed boost in every game. Enhanced features are limited to selected titles and vary by game.

What the PS5 Pro performance claims mean
GPU and rendering
Sony says the PS5 Pro has 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory than the current PS5, enabling “up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay.” That figure is Sony’s comparison, not an independent benchmark or a promise of a fixed frame-rate increase. The cited sources do not establish a universal resolution or FPS uplift; results depend on each game’s implementation and selected graphics mode.
Ray tracing
The faster ray tracing hardware can support more dynamic reflections and refractions. Sony says rays are cast at double and sometimes triple the speed of the current PS5. The visible difference depends on whether and how a game uses ray tracing; the claim does not mean every title will show a particular visual improvement.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
PSSR upscaling
PSSR uses machine learning to analyze game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them. Sony’s February 27, 2026 announcement said more than 50 PS5 Pro titles had used PSSR to boost effective resolution by that date, and named Resident Evil Requiem as the first game to use the upgraded version. That count is a dated snapshot, not a live total; the announcement described a rollout in the coming weeks and a later system update, so current behavior may depend on system software and game patches. See Sony’s upgraded PSSR announcement.
How PS5 Pro game compatibility works
The PS5 Pro plays PS5 games, but its extra graphics features are not universal. Sony says enhanced features are available only in selected PS5 games enhanced for PS5 Pro and vary by title. Check the specific game’s current patch notes and graphics options rather than assuming a particular resolution, frame rate or ray-tracing mode.
Sony also says Game Boost may stabilize or improve performance in supported PS4 and PS5 games. Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games is available for select titles. Sony’s 2024 announcement described more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games; that is the announcement’s figure, not a count of games with dedicated PS5 Pro enhancements.
Sony says VRR and 8K gaming are supported, but those system capabilities do not mean every game runs at 8K or offers VRR. The game, display, and selected mode determine what is available.
Storage, disc support and what is included
2TB internal SSD
The PS5 Pro has a 2TB SSD. Sony’s setup guide says an M.2 SSD installed in an existing PS5 can be transferred to the Pro. Before buying or moving an expansion drive, check Sony’s current M.2 requirements; the cited sources do not establish compatibility for a specific third-party model.

No built-in disc drive
The console is disc-less. Sony sells a separate PS5 Disc Drive, which the setup guide says enables supported PS5 and PS4 physical discs as well as 4K Blu-ray and DVD discs. Include the separate drive in your setup if you rely on physical games or movies.
In the box
Sony lists one DualSense wireless controller and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed with the 2TB console. Existing PS5 accessories supported by the Pro include PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, Access controller, Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore.

There are four USB ports: two USB Type-C ports on the front and two Super-Speed USB Type-A ports on the rear. Sony specifies one front Type-C port as Super-Speed USB 10Gbps and the other as High-Speed; both rear Type-A ports are Super-Speed. The console also has Gigabit Ethernet.

PS5 vs. PS5 Pro: what to compare before choosing
The most useful comparison is not a single system-wide performance number. Compare the games you play and the setup you need:
Quick Recap
- Game modes: Look for the resolution, frame-rate and graphics options offered in each specific game on both consoles.
- Ray tracing and PSSR: Confirm whether the games you care about use PS5 Pro enhancements, and what those enhancements do.
- Storage: The Pro has a 2TB SSD; consider how much space your installed games need and whether you will use supported M.2 expansion.
- Physical media: If you use discs, account for the separately sold PS5 Disc Drive.
- Display and network: Check your display’s support for relevant modes and whether Wi-Fi 7 is available in your territory.
- Total cost: Sony’s 2024 announcement listed launch MSRPs of $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR and ¥119,980 JPY including tax. These are historical launch prices, not current retail pricing; check local listings for today’s cost.
