Sony attributed the decision to industry and economic pressures identified in a business review; the sources reporting the announcement do not establish the studio’s exact final operating date or confirm what happened to every employee. Bluepoint, founded in Austin in 2006 and acquired by Sony in 2021, was known for remakes including Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus.
What happened to Bluepoint Games?
On February 19, 2026, Game Developer reported that Sony was shutting down Bluepoint Games in March, citing confirmation from a Sony spokesperson. Gematsu also reported that Sony had confirmed a March closure. This establishes Sony’s announced plan and timing, but not the precise last day the studio operated or whether the planned closure was completed as described.
Game Developer reported that 70 employees faced layoffs. That is a reported impact, not a verified final layoff count or a full account of subsequent employee outcomes. The outlets also reported that Sony’s internal message said it would seek opportunities for some affected employees in its global studio network where possible.
Why did Sony say it was closing the studio?
In an email reproduced by Gematsu and attributed to Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, Sony cited “Rising development costs, slowed industry growth, changing player behavior, and broader economic headwinds” as factors making sustainable game development harder. Sony said the closure followed a business review. These are Sony’s stated reasons; the available reports do not independently establish them as the causes of the decision.

How did the canceled God of War project fit in?
Game Developer reported that Bluepoint had been working on a live-service God of War game until its cancellation in January 2025. Gematsu also reported the cancellation and said the project reportedly began development in 2022. The reporting provides chronology, not evidence that the cancellation caused Sony to close the studio.
What was Bluepoint known for?
Bluepoint was an Austin, Texas-based studio established in 2006. Sony’s October 1, 2021 acquisition announcement described it as a long-time partner with a history of remakes and remasters. A PlayStation Blog welcome post highlighted its PS5 remake of Demon’s Souls, PS4 remake of Shadow of the Colossus, and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. Sony’s acquisition announcement also listed Gravity Rush among the studio’s portfolio.

Sony announced an agreement to acquire Bluepoint in September 2021, and PlayStation announced the studio’s addition to PlayStation Studios on September 30. At the time of Sony’s acquisition announcement, Bluepoint had a team of 70 people. In the welcome post, Bluepoint president Marco Thrush described Austin as the studio’s home since its founding in 2006 and said the team was “close to 70” and growing. The reported 70 employees facing layoffs in 2026 is a separate figure and should not be confused with the studio’s 2021 headcount.
